Volume count?

As far as I know, the light novel has a total of 23 volumes, but English sources say 12? I submitted an edit on the information, but are we excluding all the short story volumes or something?

EDIT: Okay I guess we are making that distinction. I just question if it's really necessary since, well, they're both what makes the series what it is (and this makes it a bit of a pain for me to keep track on my reading list). If you're reading sequentially, you'll be reading a mix of both whether than just one or the other.
