Hello there!

My question for you guys is exactly what the title asks. How do you enjoy Anime OSTs? I've been wanting to get into OSTs for a while now, but it's the first time I've ever listened to music without verses, choruses, etc. It's hard for me to enjoy soundtracks when I hear no words, but maybe I'm listening to them wrong. Any tips to help me get started? Also, may you guys recommend me a few OSTs to get me started?

edit: Thanks for all the general tips and advice, you guys!

I don't think there's any secret to it. You just have to like what you're hearing. You can't force yourself to like it, so when you are watching an anime, and go "that sound in the background is great!" Start with those tracks and you will slowly start to warm up to them.

I listen to OSTs almost everytime when I'm reading or studying and also to some piano/guitar covers.
I wouldn't say any OST is great to listen to it, but you should give a try to the ones from those anime you liked the most.

OP doesn't listen to instrumentals?

Good grief. OSTs really aren't a good idea then. Stick to OP/ED.

Whenever I listen to the K-on soundtrack, I make sure to light some candles and put a Bengay patch on my balls. I feel like there's no other way to really enjoy it

I don't know, I just enjoy the music, especially the sad and/or motivating ones. Those are usually the best without vocals, imo.

I can't really give tips on how to enjoy it, but maybe when listening to it try to relate it to a particular emotion.

As longs as it fots the situation and the volume is just right, I'll be good. Though lately I'm enjoying inserted background songs like aLIEz in Aldnoah Zero more.

It depends on what catches your attention. Maybe there's a soundtrack that really touched you. That's like the Chrono Cross soundtrack, I absolutely love it.

I know that's not anime, but its RPG. Same concept (^_^)

I'd try Yukari Hashimoto's work for Toradora. All of it is gorgeous.

It depends on ost but I have to admit i really like some of them. Yuki Kajura's work is quite amazing especially Fate/Zero and SAO. Egoist work for Guilty Crown, osts of Death note, Elfen lied, Code geass, Tokyo Ghoul.......Many of them are simply awesome. I like some of them more than any other type of music

If vocals/lyrics are so important for there's no help I guess. I love instrumentals, even in songs with vocals I more attention to guitars and keyboard so I love some anime OSTs.

There really isn't any secret to liking anime OST.
You either like or you don't.

You could look into popular anime composers like Hiroyuki Sawano or Yoko Kanno to see why everyone likes them so much.

I never understood the average person's obsession with vocals in music, even more so when most people hardly care about the lyrics themselves.

Try listening to an OST while you read manga or while do occupied with something that doesn't require audio.

I would watch a terrible anime if it has a good OST. It's that important for me.

If you are really twenty and have never listened to music without words, I suggest you leave the OSTs behind and start with Beethoven or Mozart, or maybe Art Blakey or Dave Brubeck. What kind of world do we live in today that someone can have lived for twenty years and have no experience with instrumental music?

My favorite OSTs include Dennou Coil, Oh! Edo Rocket, Bartender, and Seirei no Moribito for starters.

^^Implying that everyone LIKES classical music.

I've been listening to a lot of No Game No Life music lately, and the heavy synth and drum and bass is really beating up my eardrums since I like to listen to my iPod nice and loud. Particularly "The Bluff". That song just... It makes me wanna do something clever, yet stupid.

I've also been listening to Kill la Kill and SAO a lot. If you want a good anime OST to get into, go for Kill la Kill. Most of the songs on there actually have lyrics anyway. All sung in English too.
