From what I've heard, emigrating there to settle isn't in best interest.

Not at all.
I'm extremely irritated by the saying "the nail that sticks out gets hammered down", and it's frightening how strict they live after this over there.
It's really all about fitting in, and I wouldn't manage to keep that up.
I'd have to make enormous efforts to create a new self, and then I'd STILL get mocked for my foreigner-ness.

Nope, since I don't speak the language. That's a huge barrier to everyday life and all the opportunities lost because of it.

Yeah, I'll stick out like a sore thumb.

I'm not a language person (which puts me off from visiting any non-english speaking country because i'm retarded like that) and the culture is just not for me. I prefer where i am now, in London, where everyone is super anti-social until you piss them off.

Edit. Also, i'm black :)

I think I'd do well in London.

Handle it? Perhaps.

Prefer it? Hell no, not with what I've heard about it.

Why couldn't I handle living in a 1st world country? I lived in 3rd world countries before and managed.

The question is whether I would want to and the answer is yes. But I need a visa and it's hard getting a non-English teacher job for a foreigner there (unless you're already quite successful in your career and your company is willing to relocate you there, which is not the case for me).

Yep, I know your feels. That visa system is pretty lame. C'mon Japan, your population is aging, lemme in.

I most certainly would be able to live and survive in Japan. I have no intention to do so, because I don't identify myself with the japanese culture.

Nah. The culture and language would be difficult to adjust to and I'd miss my friends and family terribly.

I don't feel like I could get over the language barrier. Linguistically Japanese is just way too different from English. I also find the prospect of learning to read and write it intimidating.

However I would LOVE to visit!

I actually do want to learn Japanese along with French, and I feel that throwing myself into a place where you're "forced" to learn the language would help me get a better grip on the language. Others I've spoken to have done this and they're now fluent-- no idea if they can actually write the languages though.

Going to France or most other French-speaking countries/islands shouldn't be too hard for me to at least pretend to blend in since a lot of those countries are full of dark skinned people anyway. Even France has their share of dark-skinned people.

I heard that Japan is a bit hostile toward ANY foreigner though. I heard they're even worse when you're black. I live in a middle class, predominately white area where people at least pretend to be okay with me-- I mean, I've lived here longer than most of them. I get stares sometimes, but they're mostly from little kids that haven't seen black folks before or something. I just joke about it with my family when I get home. In Japan, I have a feeling I'd get stares every day, and at that point I feel like it'd be less of a joke and more of a daily discomfort.
