The Grail takes back the remaining Command Spells and gives them to a suitable Master, if there is a Servant in the war without a Master. The three founder families are usually the first candidates. The Servant can remain for a while until he/she runs out of mana. But even if the Servant finds a source (for example by devouring souls), a Master is needed as an anchor in the world. The only exception to this is the Archer class, which is given the Independent Action skill. So the stray Servant needs to find a new Master. The Grail doesn't choose another Master, if one of the Masters is unable to fight. You remain a Master until you're dead or your Servant is. If the Servant dies first, the Grail redistributes the Command Spells to another chosen Master, when another Servant loses his/her Master. Usually. There are exceptions. |

However, due to the contract and still being the anchor, Kayneth still counts as Lancer's Master. Kayneth cheated because he was the one who got the Command Spells, made the contract with Lancer and was also his anchor, while Sola-Ui acted as the mana supply. He is Lancer's Master, he just can't order Lancer around. Kirei is the exception I mentioned above. He lost his Servant and theoretically only would get a chance to get his Command Spells back if a Servant loses his/her Master. The Grail immediately gave him back his Command Spells because it's Kirei. |
