An example (at least imo) is Angel Beats

It Had:
Comedy
School Slice of Life
Action
Romance
Drama
Supernatural
Mystery (kind of)
A Sports episode

It wasn't the best at any of them but I thought it did at least good job on all of those.

Preferably something not too long.
I'm just a big visual novel fan but have also watched quite a bit of anime and played a bunch of games. Avatar is Mashiro from Making*Lovers and Kotori from Rewrite.

Bebop maybe?
http://myanimelist.net/anime/1 (yes, nº1. ...biased MAL)
It's obviously focused on action but manages to pull a great comedy and somewhat of a drama in a sci-fi environment.

Also,
Comedy
School Slice of Life
Action
Romance
Drama
Supernatural
Mystery (kind of)
A Sports episode

This is pretty much anything that P.A. Works makes:

@Edit:
The link above won't work. Yaaaaay, MAL is broken again :D

I'll just list it then:
Tari Tari
Angel Beats!
True Tears
Hanasaku Iroha
Nagi no Asukara
Another
RDG
Glasslip (airing)

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - has everything except school slice of life.
Planetes - good mix of drama, romance, action, kind of like SOL in space.
Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari - might be the best mix of what you're looking for.
Zero no Tsukaima

2199 has some pretty character-driven laid back scenes
I'll count it as SoL in my book

Much of Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi follows a "genre-parody-of-the-week" approach. The parodies include RPGs, Hong Kong fighting movies, and gangster film noirs among others. Somewhere around episode seven or eight it makes an abrupt turn to include some historical materials. Abe no Seimei appears along the way.
