Always on the lookout for anime where the main genre is horror or at least a series that has some creepy or darkish aspects. Preferably low or non comedy.

So difficult to find.

My favorite is by far Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate (damn so obvious)
Another good one is Jin-Roh: The wolf Brigade

Oh almost forgot to mention The Garden of Sinners :D

Anybody wanna list their favorite horror/darkish series?

If you like horror with some action maybe 3x3 Eyes is good or do you like horror with mystery? Ayatsuri Sakon is really good I just remembered it now!

Horror, horror... mystery?

Well, ElemenT beat me to Higurashi, so I'll just list the ones I've seen and let you decide.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is the one with the most violence, with the sequels being conclusions and fun, comedic episodes.

Chaos;Head is a little bit into the supernatural and psychological.

You've mentioned that you've seen "The Garden of Sinners". I'll assume that's "Kara no Kyoukai". You can check out another title that's in a similar universe: "Shingetsutan Tsukihime".

I kind of thought Witch Hunter Robin was pretty good. I haven't seen it in years, but I remember enjoying it. You can also give that a try.

I remember watching Akira on Teletoon one night. It kind of gave me a little nausea, with all the meat and metal going on (you'll know what I mean when you watch it).

'Bokurano' might fit in with your taste, it explores the ideas of the human psyche when they are driven to desperation.

I'd also recommend 'Death Note' here.

'Shigurui' is .. brutal. You'll either love it or you'll hate it, (or both & won't be able to make up your mind whether to give it a 10 or a 3 (like me, haha)).

'Requiem from the Darkness' aka '100 stories' tries to tell horror stories.

..

If you want your brain to be destroyed check out 'Mars of Destruction' =D

Sweet a lotta nice titles you guys. Too bad I've already seen em all ^^
Thanks for the recommendations tho. Keep em coming XD

Kikoushi Enma - so great. If I remember it right I gave that one a very high rating. Great story.

Loved Shigurui. True _Aniki one very brutal anime. Requiem is one of my favorites. Can't even remember how many times I've rewatched it. maybe it's time again.

Def know what you mean bout Akira Vale90.
And yes by Garden of Sinners I mean Kara no Kyoukai :D
Wonder what happened to ep 7. Supposedly it aired Aug. 8th I think :/

How about Devilman Lady it has some Yuri, maybe not your taste but the story is very serious and violence and have this kind of bitter feeling, there is also lot of gore.

She is abused very much because of her power and and lot of sad things happen around of her. There is some good moments here and there too. I think it was you who did not like romance but there is some in this anime however, but I think you should watch it because this anime is very underrated or not many people have seen it and the horror and drama aspect is good I think.

I don't think you might want horror with psychological but here goes:

Gantz: If you can get past all the profanity tossed in almost every episode then this works for you. And don't expect much character development due the very nature of the show except for a select few. Although biased, I found the dub to be quite emotional stirring, but that's just me.

Pet Shop of Horrors: Old style animation, OVA, but teaches a moral each time in not so normal ways.

Higurashi and Elfen Lied, which was mentioned above

Umineko No Naku Koro Ni: More mystery than horror, like Higurashi, but the abnormally done murders makes it horror.

Hope this helped XD

Devilman Lady....yuri...mmmm but also gore? Great I'll check it XzaR.
Some of the old school series are way better than the more recent ones.

Horror with psychological aspects? Def so darklite.
Gantz was not bad at all. Pet Shop of Horrors - oh my Count D luved that guy. If any of you haven't seen it. I can only recommend it. And then when you've finished the series go read the manga.
Higurashi series nice ones also. Creepy not to mention violent ^^
First 2 series were the best IMO.

Lawl I can't help it _Aniki. Imma sucker for anime XD

Hehehe nah it's not scary. Problem with anime is that not many true horror have been made.

@spectre_vampire .... I've seen a few hentaish anime :)

School Days... mmm I dunno. Those girls on the info page look a little to cute n loli.

Apart from the titles already mentioned I'd add:

Jigouko Shoujo: It spanned three seasons and some episodes are chilling but it suffers from a problem: it is very repetitive. All seasons are, in fact.

Kakurenbo: It's a short movie but it's surprisingly creepy.

Le Portrait de Petit Cossette: Very dark and disturbing anime that is highly underrated. It's heavily psychological, so much so that the plot itself often takes the backseat.

Kurozuka: This one veers into sci-fi territory but it's full of bloody and shocking moments, too.

NightWalker: Something of a supernatural detective story that every now and then has some intriguing cases. Bonus points for a vampire lead, I suppose.

Vampire Princess Miyu: I think this one has already been mentioned and with good reason. Miyu is surprisingly tragic and once the 'monster of the week' formula is broken it becomes very emotional.

Yami no Matsuei: Possessions galore and shinigami. Unfortunately the anime is essentially inconclusive and the mangaka put the manga on hold a while ago so I don't know if it'll ever be concluded.

Mouryou no Hako: Psychological, gripping, mysterious, a great soundtrack, an historical setting and a brooding aura of horror with chilling moments. What more can you ask? Maybe to get all episodes fansubbed or licensed...
