I personally approve of it because Wiki gives you all the info you need simple and easy. Just ask Wikipe-tan.

I understand why some of you guys may dislike Wiki, because people edit it. But, I've experienced first-hand that Wiki will un-edit unhelpful edits.
But what do you guys think?

I don't really have an opinion about the content of the site, but I can't stand those irritating "A personal message from Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales" donations they beg for every once in a while.

True. The vast majority of information is accurate. Contentious historical - political issues will be contended whether they are exposed in wikipedia with references to academic study X or in Britannica with references to academic study X. On the downside, exposition leaves a lot to be desired.

Love Wikipedia. I don't really use it for anything important, so no risk of fatally wrong information, but if I want general information on a game, anime, tv show, etc, I go to Wiki. It's like carrying around a book of general knowledge in my pocket, and all I need to do is type something in to find the correct page.

Well it's one I use as a references in my assignments so Wikipedia has my respect, without that i'll fail some of my subs. And you can almost find anything there. Well the only thing I don't get is that why some of my professors especially my chem professors doesn't want to use wiki as a reference.

Why would anybody hate Wikipe-tan? WHY?

Its not like you are FORCED to open wiki everytime you search something. You are free to visit other sources/websites.

It doesn't even advertise itself on other websites. Like those freaking porn ads that pops up on hentai sites. Argh, they are annoying.

WHY THE FUCK WOULD SOMEONE DISLIKE WIKI? WHY THE...NOW I AM PISSED OFF!!!

Anyone who dislikes a website which provides Free information must not realize the insane work it takes to create such a library of knowledge.
If Wikipedia didn't exist then searching for info on Anything on the Internet would be way more tiresome.

Who doesn't like free knowledge? I don't have to pay for all of the knowledge in wikipedia, unlike a traditional paper-back encyclopedia. Those have now become obsolete.

Its good for timelines, and a general Idea of a topic, not as many people as you would think edit it just to be a jerk, there are so many people that are monitoring those articles because they care about the topic they could just restore it to a previous version if some kid came through and messed it up. I think its good, but I don't use it for history as much as I do for more recent things.

That's the conventional wisdom, but I disagree. I have no problem with people sourcing Wikipedia in low-ish level papers. It's a useful source, and if you use it as a source you should cite it.

AskMen.com on the other hand... Worst/funniest source I've ever seen.

You can do this - it really depends on what subject you are writing your paper on. Generally online academic journal collections like JSTOR are a better collection of sources than Wikipedia articles. Wikipedia is good for general information, but you are unlikely to find any really good sources in most of the articles unless you just want background information.

How about searching the Wikipedia for criticism of Wikipedia? :D

In my opinion, Wikipedia is good for a quick and interesting look on the surface, however it's like with any information from anywhere: you can't really prove most of the stuff that has been, is and will be happening in the world by yourself. So take any (partially) open source encyclopaedia with a grain of salt as well as any information included by printed ones (closed source).

I personally approve of Wikipedia as a reliable source of information. I mean not everyone can edit it, even if you can, moderators re-edit back false or misleading information in a matter of seconds or a few minutes. The fact that it is widely used throughout the world itself conveys that it is reliable. It wouldn't be so widely used in the world of today if it weren't reliable to begin with. One can also refer to the references/footnotes utilised by the articles itself. Its also available in various languages, not just English, making it more international. Also I disregard any major or evident sense of bias, favouritism, or scepticism in Wikipedia. Would however check other sites too for precision and accuracy.

There are some disadvantages that would lead some into disapproving it though. Some I can currently think of are the controversial opinions of its organisation. Its pretty anarchic and disorganised some would say but I personally think as most articles/pages have a contents tab, its pretty organised being split into distinct sections of information.
