http://myanimelist.net/anime.php

Quite simply, it has stopped working for me. It was working several minutes ago.

Any form of advanced search doesn't work, even from site links. Clicking on upcoming anime, or just added anime, or any of the letter links leads to an error. Clicking any of the genre tags on an anime's page leads to an error page. The search button itself doesn't work unless two letters are inserted.

So, anything other than a search for a specific anime is broken. Am I the only one experiencing this?

Edit: Here's a screenshot of the error page. As you can see, I clicked the "N" letter. Also note the darkened/disabled search button.

Mod Edit: Modified title for clarity and/or easier searching.
This thread is about all kinds of problems with the anime/manga search function. This includes the genre/producer/etc. search on anime/manga pages. All these problems have been fixed now.

Since you can't go to the advanced search by simply clicking the magnifier in the top navigation anymore, please use the following ways:

Anime Advanced Search:
Click the "Anime" link in the top navigation and then "Advanced Search".

Manga Advanced Search:
Click the "Manga" link in the top navigation and then "Advanced Search".

I have been informed by Xinil that Crave had to force a two character minimum when using the search option since single characters were killing the database. This has also messed up searching by letter since it just uses a single character.

@ Use a search engine instead, it's easier and faster.
I'm instantly finding titles such as "K" that way.

Both advanced search and the normal search are working for me except the 1 character ban, but even when it was working, I couldn't find Anime such as "K" with it.

Or is something else meant by "top search bar" instead of that one:

?

btw: I had to do this kind of search to find "K" on the second page in the advanced search:

Genre, rating, age rating, and other specific searches no longer work because of this either.

Using Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as an example, you could scroll down to the genres and click on them for all shows categorized in that genre. For example, clicking the "action" link would yield this url:
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?genre[]=1

A simple inspection of the url mechanism allowed one to make more detailed searches, such as all action anime that are rated PG-13:
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?r=3&genre[]=1

None of this works anymore because of the field requirement. This was one of the more powerful and useful features the site had, in my opinion, so I'd be rather sad to see this go. I don't think I'm understanding whether this was intentional or simply a side effect, though.

@Noboru: He's referring to the search bar at the top-right of every page, I believe.

Edit: On second thought, I think he's referring to the letter links on the anime search page. Sorry~

oh yeah, I forgot to mention that you have to replace the [ with %5B and the ] with %5D when you want to post the links.

You can open notepad, copy the link in it, press Ctrl+H, search for "[" and replace with "%5B" (without quote marks) and do the same for "]" but replace it with "%5D" instead.

I assume you have to add at least two _ in your search bar or any other place holder for the genre search to work again:
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?q=__&genre%5B%5D=1

So in my example, you end up with:
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?q=__&r=3&genre[]=1

This works. Thanks for sharing the work-around.

Agreed, it makes it to where I can't browse anime by genre anymore. Not much use to a database if the only way I can find things on it is by already knowing the title.

So it was really just a matter of adding place holders and replacing the old search links with "__". c:

edit: @Hraktuus: add q=__& in the URL after the question mark and before the genre (between both of them) and try again.

You need a place holder in the URL such as q=__& or adding "_" (underscore) symbols in your search term (q=search term) if it's smaller than 2 characters.
Examples are in the thread linked by Subpyro.

Ya I found that putting two underscore symbols __ in the search bar is the same as leaving it blank. Thank you

Which part exactly? It's just editing the old URL
(
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?letter=K
)

and adding q=__& between the question mark and the first search parameter:
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?q=__&letter=K

Yeah, but, John, if The Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists.

@ DarkMorpher: Of course you can. Simply add &q=__ at the end of the search URL
It's even easier than using it in the middle, see also 3rd posting by Serhiyko:

(Long time lurker turned a member today, thanks for the goodies MAL).
There are more issues with search functions currently, are all of them (mentioned in this thread) being worked on, or just some?
I've tried to use genre search, which is not working (as mentioned by TripleSrank):
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?genre[]=8

As some people mentioned here, the listing by parameters is the main advantage of this site, is there an ETA on working on this fun breaking bug, which prevents us from using this site?

More so, is there a temporary workaround, where I can use genre search function until it's properly fixed by admins?

Super, this workaround therefore works for genre lists too.
1)you select genre
2)you get error
3)you add the &q=__ at the end
4)it works

:)

I think now we are in a good situation. Although the advanced search is not so much convenient, it works perfectly with the help of workaround ( &q=__ ). This has solved the biggest problem (that we weren't able to use advanced search at all).

It's a bit harder now, but it works, which is the important thing. Give the man (admin) a time guys, I am sure he knows about this bug and our voice was heard.

▌MAL ADVANCE SEARCH FIX▌
Hello peeps of MAL. Here's a quick fix I came up with the advance search problem.
○Check the genres you want
○Type in the search box the following "%%" (without the coms of course.)
Click search and that's it.
Remember the devs are aware of the current issues throughout MAL at the moment so please take it easy on them, and as far as I can tell theres only one coder.
Anyways hope I helped Keep calm and keep watching anime.

Yes because it's useless to make this just a thread of people saying they have a problem. Crave knows there's a problem, it's affecting everyone. They delete the threads and tell the OP about this thread so they can read the info and not fill this thread with "hey I don't know if you've noticed, but I can't search on the Advanced search".

Oh yeah, if you click the "recently created" or "last active" links on the clubs page, you need to add &cn=__ to the end of the url rather than &q=__. Figured I'd post it here since someone asked about it.
