Most vibrantly "alive" anime? (Production values + soul + immersion)

There's something to be said for soul in anime. I notice that many technically and artistically amazing anime sometimes come with a lack of detail in simple world building.

I started noticing this after watching Air, an aging anime that is despite its age extremely detailed in the art. It's as if the town it takes place in was frozen in time and hand drawn in excruciating detail. Many newer anime lack this feeling of authenticity for me.

No shop window, street, field or substance in this anime is 'empty feeling' if you get my drift. The detail is just mind blowing.

Any other examples of huge amounts of world detail in anime? Shows that got all the little details just right?

Anything by Ghibli, really. Just look at the sheer amount of junk in any of their scenes.

Ghost in the Shell (1995) is the first that comes to mind:

Hmm, many newer shows have great art. Ao Haru Ride and Sidonia no Kishi for example. AHR uses amazing watercolours and Sidonia uses CGI and it works very well.

^ This. If I rewatched it right now, I would just stare into the sunsets and cry.

If we're talking about world building instead of art detail (I don't think that's what the OP intended, but whatever), then I'll second ARIA and Kemono no Souja Erin. Will also add Seirei no Moribito, Dennou Coil, GitS:SAC, Haibane Renmei, and Kino's Journey.

Shinsekai Yori had a good atmosphere/setting or whatever, but the animation was really lackluster.

Redline, 5cm, psychic school wars get my vote

I loved how the world was built and changed over time in Spirited Away. It left me wondering how many more things there were to discover in a vibrant world such as itself.

I found these to be quite 'immersive' as well:

Texhnolyze
Pale Cocoon
Paprika

Or, maybe it's just because I'm partial to the direction, idk.

oh yea, the "other" world in CLannad/AF.

even though the world seemed simple enough, the soundtrack + the quality made it feel so mysterious and calming.

I found all Makoto Shinkai movies deeply immersive but a special mention should go to Kotonoha no Niwa in which he takes his signature style to the next level predominantly during the prolonged rain scenes. It felt as if you were litteraly sharing your time with the two characters in that garden, waiting in silence for the rain to pass. It was just breathtaking.

The first thing I thought of was Akira. The second thing I thought of was a Makoto Shinkai film. The latter is probably a better example.

In terms or production value, immersion, massive attention to details and directing Zankyou no Terror from this season is spectacular.
The anime industry is dead, the otaku fanbase killed it.
