I've decided that I'm going to get serious about rating anime. For the most part, I've just enjoyed the shows without giving major thought about what I liked or didn't like about it.

I'm curious as to how others rate shows. I mean, I have some categories in mind, such as character development, art, music, storylines, etc.

But I'm looking for other categories that I should consider and perhaps explanation. What I mean by explanations is, for example, I'm aware of "pacing" but not sure how it plays into anime. Like the anime Slam Dunk had a REALLY slow pace, but I didn't care b/c it was funny. But others might disagree.

So any help would be appreciated

Its hard to rate anime based on story etc. because you would have to be rating a lot of the comedy/slice of life anime on a lower scale, which isn't really fair.

Everything really plays a factor (story, characters, music, art, etc), but not all anime should be rated under the same scale that's why I just rate based on how I feel about it. (how much I enjoyed it)

10 - masterpiece
9 - amazing
8 - very good
7 - good
6 - enjoyable
5 - alright
4 - bad
3 - very bad
2 - horrible
1 - horrendous

Its as simple as that.

Been a long time since I cared to rate anything with any depth in my decision but generally I would basically rate the story, art/animation, characters, music and own personal enjoyable, each out of 10, then take the total and you got my score.

Though since I'm a lazy ass lately, I just give it a random number in range of what I felt.

I basically just use a 9 point scale starting from '2', I'm much too big of a pleb to dislike something so much, with just 1 exception.

I'll just paste what's on my profile:

As for the list, it's first and foremost meant for me, so I don't necessarily try to rate them as objectively as possible. What determines the score is mainly how much I enjoyed the anime, as well as its writing, art and music, but I also reward unconventional shows that dare to be different (and do it well). Makes it easier to separate them from all that generic shit. Did I mention how I dislike restrictions? Turns out I don't even tend to follow my own guidelines, so I end up rating shows pretty arbitrarily. It can't be helped.

I read the plot of an anime before I watch it and judge whether or not I will enjoy it. So far it has worked out well with only 2 anime dropped and the rest ranging from a 6 to the elusive 10.

10 - In my opinion a masterpiece. Outstanding and perfectly executed story. Well developed and likable character cast. Animation and Sound are good at the least. A phenomenon that passes by not very often.

9 - Great. Near perfection but flawed in someway that prevents it from calling it a masterpiece. Stellar storytelling, passable characters at the least. Holds still close to my heart.

8 - Very Good. Has enjoyed a lot though it's journey. Great story and/or characters. Animation and sound are at least passable.

7 - Good. Mostly positive, but had some beef with it. Great in some aspect. I at least had some entainment in it.

6 - Average, but has a few things that stand out from neing mediocre. Has many flaws, but has at least does some aspect very well.

5 - Medicore. Very flawed and sometimes a very stupid plot. Bad execution and/or bad plot, but found something in the least entaining.

4/2 - An utter waste of time. I obviously did not enjoy it. It has to have at least one complimant from me or not make me rip out my eyes.

1 - Appalling in every critical aspect shape or form. Has zero qualities and gave me cancer through extreme stress. Can make a great day go terribly wrong.

For me Story and Characters are usually the most important factors because I derive enjoyment from well done story and characters. Art and sound usually aren't that important to me, so unless I'm reviewing the series I tend not to factor that in. But sometimes specific series like TTGL can get a 10 from me even when the plot is pretty stupid because it's executed in an unbelievably amazing manner.

this thread is still alive? :/

anyway, because you re still here OP, my rating starts from 8, and i give or take a point for any remarkable positive/negative feels i get about the various aspects of the show
sometimes the scoring starts from the score i gave to a similar anime instead of 8

Primarily based on enjoyment though my scale is usually a 3 - 9 since I reserve 10 for my favorite series and nothing is terrible enough to get lower than 3. Or if it is I didn't bother watching it in the first place. I view a 7 as the standard "this was a good series" grade that all series should strive to at least attain.

10 = "OMG THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS I'VE EVER SEEN. THANK YOU POWERS THAT BE FOR MY EYES AND EARS THAT I WAS ABLE TO EXPERIENCE THIS WORK OF MASTERY!"

9 = "Wow, that was incredible! This is why i love anime!"

8 = "I enjoyed that very much. I'm very glad I watched that."

7 = "Eh, it was pretty good. Nothing too special, but I'm happy with it."

6 = "It was okay, I guess. It could have been better, like a lot better, but it's okay for what it was."

5 = "Whatever. I'll probably forget this existed in a week."

4 = "Ugh, what a complete waste of my time."

3 = "Oh god, that was awful! Of everything I could have watched, why did I watch this?"

2 = "FUCK. THIS. SHIT."

1 = "I have reached shit nirvana. I ain't even mad. How can you be mad at something that didn't even try from the start, something that didn't even want to try to be halfway decent, something that gave up at the starting line? You're a waste of existence, anime. The world would be a better place if you had never been created."

For me, it's personal enjoyment first, story/characters second, art/animation third, and everything else last.

I think ratings should be personal and there isn't really a right or wrong way to rate shows. Also, I watch anime as a form of entertainment and to relax when I'm busy or stressed out, so I'm not going to sit there and deliberate back and forth between scores.

And I tend to watch things that I know I'll like, so I don't have them many low scores on my list.

I look at how much I enjoyed the show overall and if I got excited during it. Then is the characters and how they changed throughout the series. I also look at how the plot might have changed and if it fit the show it was in. Then the feel of the anime I guess, if it took itself too seriously or was meant to just be funny and stuff. Lastly is always whether or no I thought it was worth it. If it ended and left me like "Well that sucked." or if I loved it and couldnt accept it ended. Then I just think about it for a while.

Best list.

Anyway, 10/10 is something that's pretty much perfect. 6-9 is differing levels of enjoyment (9 is something I can watch whenever I feel like it), 5 is neutral, and anything below that ranges from slight disdain to pure hatred. It's hard to finish anything below a 4.

Personal enjoyment, and i don't rate bellow 6 because if an anime is as bad as a 5 or lower i drop it.

Like:
10 - Feels + Art + Very entertaining + Bakemonogatari.
9 - Feels + Art + not boring.
8 - Art + not too boring.
7 - Meh, boring.
6 - Shit.

Here's how I rate anime--

10: Very entertaining, did not give me any doubts, and kept me watching (10+ hour anime streak...)

9: Entertained, but possibly one or two flaws

8: It was great, maybe a few parts bored the hell out of me, but it was good

7: Eh, it was okay. I probably won't watch it again.

6: Wow, okay. This kind of sucked, but I guess a few things were good

5: This really sucks, why do people like this anime?

4: I only enjoyed one or two things from this anime

3: Never watching this again

2: Awful. I really could have been watching something much better rather than wasting my time here

1: Why did I even think about watching this, I wish I can forget it now ( or was too disgusting).

I rate it by the feeling I get, I'll read the first two lines of the plot, then if I want to continiue reading it wether that I like it or it's interesting, i'll watch it. I'll read a plot that doesn't interest me, i'll look for another!

When I simply rate shows, I just place a number on how much I enjoyed it from a scale of 1 - 10 without really taking much in to consideration. If I had a good time watching it it'll be 8 - 10 regardless of some glaring flaws in animation, character, or plot.

Unless i'm reviewing a show, I don't really take much in to consideration when putting a score.

I rate it out of 10 in each of these categories: Story, Characters, Animation, Sound & Music, Impact, and Enjoyment; I then average the scores and voila, I have a rating.

However, on my anime list here, I usually rate purely on Enjoyment.

When I give 9s and 10s I just enjoyed them really hard, even if it had minor flaws.
If I enjoyed it quite much but it had significant flaws I oscillate between 7 and 8.

When I didn't enjoyed it I give 6 or 5.. I didn't go under that border up to now, but I don't exclude the possibility

I base anime rating on weighing what they were trying to achieve up against what they actually achieved, most of all. Then after that I factor in art, writing, screenplay, characters, enjoyment, and sound.

Hence why I rate No Game No Life 9 while I rate Kamisama no Memochou 5. The latter simply failed at too many things* while the prior did everything they set out to do just right.

*my review will explain what I mean and I'm not going to post it here.

That's funny, I rated MoD 2 so that the OreImo specials wouldn't have competition for the 1.

Your criteria should change depending on what type of Anime it is e.g. in an action Anime fight scenes will be very important towards the final score, whereas its the opposite in a Slice of Life Anime.
