So far there hasn't been any clear answer. Also, does it matter if i start with one at random? Will i get a better understanding watching them in chronological order?

You can start with any of these timelines.

The only one that's a bit odd to get into at random is the original Universal Century, I wouldn't suggest jumping in at random series there but alot of them aren't directly related so even that is fine.

I don't recommend starting with Turn A Gundam either.
In addition to that timeline there's the Advanced Generation (Age), Reguild Century (G-Reko), and "the near future" (Build Fighters).

To add to what Yorozuya's said, outside of the Universal Century (UC) anime, there's no particular benefit nor necessity for watching in a specific order except that you'll be able to see where the newer shows are deriving certain themes and tropes/cliches.

Special mention for Turn A, Build Fighters, and Gunpla Builders which do have some level of reference to the other Gundams.

If you're not ready for the old and perhaps harder to get into Original (UC) timeline, then Wing, SEED, or 00, would give you a taste of the average Gundam show - these 3 being some of the most popular "modern" Gundams.

As a longtime Gundam Fan-boy i would say it doesn't really matter where you start. Most of if not all the Gundam series stand alone just fine. I began with Gundam Wing because it was on TV back in the day.

Why not start with the original 0079?

MSG the 08th MS Team and MS Zeta Gundam are among the best from the Universal Century story line so those are must watch in my book.

Start with the original Gundam and work your way from there.

Gundam Wing was what introduced me to gundam anime. However I'd suggest 00 since several fans like to call it the modernized version of what gundam wing should've been.

edit: Universal century stuff is the best IMO though. My favorite gundam show of all time is 08th MS team.
