For me, a GOOD opening should not only have a great music, but it should also match the atmoshere of the series - in terms of animation AND music. I don't have one favourite opening, so here's my list:

"Tenjou Tenge" (song: m.c.A.T. - "Bomb A Head! V")
"Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" (song: Shimamiya Eiko - "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni")
"Soul Eater" 1st opening (song: T.M. Revolution - "Resonance")
"Spice and Wolf" (song: Kiyoura Natsumi - "Tabi no Tochuu")
"Durarara!!" 1st opening (song: Theatre Brook - "Uragiri no Yuuyake")
"Mirai Nikki" 1st opening (song: Yousei Teikoku - "Kuusou Mesorogiwi")
"Bleach" 2nd opening (song: UVERworld - "D-tecnolife")
"Attack on Titan" 1st opening (song: Linked Horizon - "Guren no Yumiya")

Also, list of other openings that I like, judging by the music alone, includes:

"xxxHolic" (song: Suga Shikao - "19 sai")
"Deadman Wonderland" (song: Fade - "One Reason")
"Darker Than Black" (song: Abingdon Boys School - "Howling")
"Ayakashi - Japanese Classic Horror" (song: Rhymester feat. Fire Ball - "Heat Island")
"Shiki" (song: Buck-Tick - "Kuchizuke")

I'll only mention some no so know ones, it has no point to mention things as Cowboy Bebop or Serial Experiments Lain.
-Gungrave opening and ending
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5N_wn7D4bk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1soyz7DeEDU
The cool and aesthetic opening combines well with the melancholic ending.
-Blue Gender ending
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk2afySLQ3o
One of the cutest anime songs I've heard. I also recommend the pretty underrated anime, although its second half is not so good and the ending is simply bad -in my opinion-.
-Shingetsutan Tsukihime opening and ending
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-gpFD5NfXY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHKsGkRtu4I
This doesn't exist to many people, but I liked the anime even with all its nonsense. I really liked the music, it really matches the aesthetic and general tone of the series.
-Boogiepop Phantom opening
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6Op4g9T-M0
Version with the lyrics (they're really nice): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hW1KLw0peYU
And a cool live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKAz1-CuWbs
I can not say if it fits with the anime, but I cant imagine what other type of song could have worked. It's a really comfy love song.

You like a lot of cool music. No surprise I'd like the Tsukihime tracks, downloading the whole soundtrack now (since it's all by OP composer Toshiyuki O'mori and arranged by ED composer Yoko Ueno). :)

Had some tangential thoughts re:Boogiepop, replied here: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1742469&show=0#msg56483939

I still have not listened the soundtracks in depth, but the music of both the anime and the visual novel are really worth it.
Regarding re:Boogiepop, altough the industry is in a serious stagnation I do not think that bringing old works is necessarily unoriginal, it may be a safe bet but it can bring a breath of fresh air and end up being a really good work. In this case I think it might be an interesting anime, but by the moment it looks like a typical product, unlike how unique the old anime was (in narrative, aesthetic, direction, and music) the old anime was. They will not make something so commercially risky again, but I hope it does not end up being a product of the bunch. By the way, eventually I'll speak in depht about the soundtrack of the original series (after watching the anime again and listening to the discs properly).

Do you mean using an old style of music, or actually the same song? I'd agree that either could be the best choice. I love that the Yamato 2199 remake (2012) has the same OP as the 1974 original, only re-recorded (with the same vocalist, apparently). I haven't seen Sailor Moon Crystal yet, and I did love the new OP in Sailor Stars, but I think it's sad that Crystal never used Moonlight Densetsu as an OP. I mean, maybe use it for the first cour and then replace it? Or use it once in a special place.

"But we need a NEW song to sell more overpriced CDs." :P

I was speaking about remakes in general, not music. In any case, using nostalgic songs is an interesting way of adding emotional impact in a remake or any work (an interesting example is one more time, one more chance in 5 centimeters per second, a popular song unrelated to the film that must have been nostalgic to the japanese people who heard it years before the film).

I like "Whiteout" at the end of Boogiepop wa Warawanai and "Tsuki Akari" at the end of Darker than Black by Rie Fu. I'm sure there are others but I can't remember right now.

Funny thing I imagined Rie Fu performing it at night, on the piano, in a public place and later she did.
