I really glad to see this get subbed, it's from Shinsen so that's good or bad depending on your view. I'm still waiting on Noramimi to get subbed but I can feel confident in saying, Yes!, you are the best first ep this series!

And to all those who haven't checked it out, just take a gander at the OP

the animation style is a bit off-putting, but the content is enough to keep me watching.

Yeah the animation is different but you'll get used to it. For those that don't know, it's the same style that was used in Mononoke. So if you liked that you should feel right at home here.

The graphic is as of directly from manga, but the sound and story pacing are great!

That Kitaro boy looks disturbing ...but i guess it was intended lol.

Great first ep; the sound stood out for me, the animation is unique and the ending of the episode was pretty unexpected. (for me at least)

I love the art style but... that's pretty much it. I'll wait to see more, but i'm not expecting too much from this.

I was put off by the art style....for about 2 minutes. Then I realized how brilliant it was. The story is pretty quirky in its own way, too. Will certainly continue watching.

I miss Silver haired Kitaro :( ie the original style one from the 60's 70's etc. Meh Hakaba looks pretty cool though, I wonder how different he will be from GeGeGe Kitaro.

This is what I would see Tim Burton making if he were head of an anime studio. The OP was great but the ED did not fit at all, thats really my only complaint. This series could turn out to be the best or one of the worst of the winter shows. What an awesome start though!

Though I was a bit hesitent to watch it...it proved out to be a very good 1st ep in my opinion and just like Mononoke the artstyle is quite a draw....I have high expectations for the series and wonder how the series will play out.

I thought the ED fit pretty well cause it had a very similar feel to the ED of Mononoke and Ayakashi - Japanese Classic Horror series (kind of felt nostalgic lol)

finally managed to get some time to catch this. saw spoon's hd version. and i gotta say, the animation style is really cool. some of the effects used were pretty awesome. too bad my comp can barely play the hd version so there were sync issues at times.

It seemed darker than the couple episodes of the gegege series. That series was more scooby doo and not as much Hell Girl. But I enjoy shows that go to the extreme to not look the same. The pulp fiction style was great for me.

Man this is exciting! Horror, parody, I'm glad I picked this up. So far some stuff like including character design, sound fx is beyond my expectations.
Deformed boy, missing an eye, creepy voice, creepy smile, takes off in the evening, able to talk to spirits, well hello Kitaro!

So... almost 3 years went by and nobody commented on this show? hmm kinda weird.

& 50 k views on veoh? O.o

A rather creepy start, with the hero abusing the poor man who gave him a shelter and rejecting humans. Yes, the guy first gave him up (leading to the loss of his eye) but that's understandable.
Will we see him gradually opening up to humanity as his genetic father advised? Not sure with only 11 episodes but I hope it will hint on that.

Design-wise, it was near excellent, looking both smooth and close enough to the manga's period (and Kitarô's initial look) and going for a comic panel-like style for the whole frame. Special mention for the opening even though I'm no fan of the music.
My only problem was with the sudden abrupt cuts with no transition. Either my player had playback problems or I don't understand the desired effect (evocation of the old comics roughness?).
Masako Nozawa playing one of her emblematic roles is a nice bonus too.

5/5 The mother was surviving working in a hospital and shared her yûrei/yôkai/mononoke power ? I always thought the patients were changed through sold blood.

On-hold till I can show it to the family !

@gfsdfgsdgsdfgs Just wanted to confirm that it was an interesting work.
@CodeBlazeFate @AshitanoJonas May I point this out to you?

@Daviljoe193 Still nice to have her reprise one of her big roles before someone else finally took her place as Kitarô.

First thoughts, that OP is kinda shit, but the art style is AMAZING!! Reminds me of the dramatic shading that was later used in the 2018 Gegege no Kitaro.

Seeing that mummified body losing it's eye (Medama Oyaji) just like what was shown in the 2018 OP, along with Kitaro's hand bursting from a grave, so freaking cathartic. As a fan of Gegege no Kitaro, I thoroughly enjoyed this first episode.

Only weird thing is how Masako (Medama Oyaji's seiyu in the 2018 series, who doesn't really sound like the Kitaro I'm familiar with) is voicing Kitaro here, and how Isamu (Medama Oyaji's 1968 seiyu) was still voicing Medama Oyaji just as well as he did on day one.
Opinions are opinions, and differing opinions can co-exist. 🙂 But I don't do debate, life's too short to spend time debating people.

The MV for Denki Groove's opening is a banger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPUyybTsnRg Too bad it was deleted from MAL

Looks like this will be the closest Kitaro adaptation to the manga we'll ever get (maybe even the early akahon versions?). I wonder what stories will get adapted. The art direction reminded me of Mononoke (and true enough, there's some staff overlap). Expected more from Kenji Nakamura's ED though.

UPD: indeed the akahon versions are there https://gegegenokitaro.fandom.com/wiki/Hakaba_Kitar%C5%8D_(2008)#Episodes

Maybe it's a different variation of the story (Mizuki was known to redraw some chapters for different magazine runs), or just some creativity on the anime staff's part. Since you've seen the whole thing: how different are they from manga stories? Or pretty close to them? I've read quite a lot of the manga so wondering how original are they getting here.

So what happened to Kitarou's adoptive father? He's dead?
