Since I'm attending school again, I've noticed that a lot of my classmates have a really limited vocabulary and are not able to write grammatically correct sentences in their native language. Granted, many of them are of immigrant background, but it's really not limited to them.

My politics teacher told me that she lets her students answer questions in key points rather than making them write full sentences, since she has to evaluate language proficiency too and these sentences would end up so wrong most of the time, that a lot of students would end up failing if they'd try to write full sentences. So she makes them write as less as possible. Kinda sad if you ask me.

Did you experience this too? I don't think it's an isolated problem.

Give people an inch and they'll take a mile.

I would say yes. My whole countries education system is victim to such antics.

I have not met an illiterate person irl

And by met I mean talked to. Not counting random ppl I see on the street

There are a few people I know that have moved from other countries, but they seem proficient at reading/writing. Their grammar can be a mess at times, but generally they are ok.

Yeah, everyone in my classes have awful spelling and grammar. Its really cringe-worthy reading my peers essays because of the extremely limited vocabulary that they use plus all of the grammar mistakes. It also makes peer evaluations pointless because no one ever gives useful feedback due to their lack of knowledge.

I wonder sometimes about that sometimes.

I dunno though. I can't say whether I myself am literate, and I'm sure that, to someone more educated and more intelligent, I can seem just as stupid and blabbery as those I look down on.

I only noticed this problem back up until the end of high school and maybe my college freshman year. Thank goodness.

Reading-wise I had no problem despite my lack of study, and my only major problem with writing was lack of clarity and pretentious language. I'm not a hot shot now, but I still cringe at some of my earlier college work.

Well, I've read that for example the range of vocabulary a kid acquires depends largely on the amount of words spoken to them by their parents when they are small. So if the parents already have a limited vocabulary, the kids will probably inherit that. Apart from that it may also be a sign that the parents didn't devote enough time to speak with their children and develop their language skills.

I think I'm one of these illiterate people as English is technically my 3rd language.
I often use the same words over and over again which will definetly make any native cringe as they read my passages.
Oh well, but I'm still trying to improve.

I believe the best way to solve this problem is to address it rather than making them write as short as possible.

Why do people with English as an alternative language say their English is bad, but they're better than most who have it as their native language? I have always wondered this.
OT: The route your teacher is taking is probably hurting them more. If they aren't being challenged to improve their literacy, they won't improve.

Well, I'm talking about native speakers though. It's understandable that you are not proficient in foreign languages unless you studied them extensively. But I think you should be somewhat able to express yourself in your native language.

Even though I was born in Portugal and have lived there pretty much my whole life. I have been most of my time in English private schools. I am now attending a public one and it's a shock for me to see Portuguese people who have a very limited vocabulary of their own native language..
I mean I studied pretty much my whole life in English, lived my life in English and french, yet Portuguese is perfectly fine, a bit more advanced than the average person as a matter of fact.

So yeah I get what you're saying OP. I don't agree in how your teacher is dealing with the situation really, if people are already in High school or college and don't know how to write perfectly plausible then they should get some tutoring done or something.. Not have an easy mode to finish High school/college.

I'm in Canada and it seems after middle school English teachers don't even teach grammar. This is a problem considering English has wacky grammar, and it simply isn't intuitive enough for kids to understand. So pretty much if kids just squandered their childhood having "fun" and not paying attention in English class or spend time reading books, their grammar and vocabulary will probably be close to elementary school level. Which is.. pretty crappy.

'trying too hard' was basically invented for posts like yours.

Well, French is a pretty hard langage mostly due to its ridiculously complicated grammar, so it's not that uncommon to see students reach highscool or college and still make a lot of small -and sometimes huge- grammar mistakes in their essays. The popularization of txt slang probably didn't help either. As for the vocabulary, I'd say it all comes down to how much one reads, as it's pretty much the #1 way to expand one's vocabulary.

Not sure it's on topic, but I remember one of my highschool French teacher saying something that stuck with me until now: "A majority of people don't know how to read properly". And I believe it's true. When you don't exercise/practise regurlarly to read out loud, if you're asked to read something out loud (in front of your class for eg.) most times you're gonna end up stumbling over a lot of words and that'll be pretty hard to hear for your audience.

The non-native English speakers in this topic surprise me with how well they write in English. I know most Americans cannot speak or write correctly. I think it has to do with no one caring about it anymore.

English is the first language in Australia. The education system is pretty good over here but unfortunately, occasionally you get idiots in charge. My generation went through a system that advocated insisting on students using correct grammar and punctuation somehow oppressed their creativity (clearly missed the point of first drafts) so they stopped teaching it in schools. Universities had to introduce writing classes, particularly for engineering, science and other degrees that weren't writing orientated because employers were complaining that while the graduates were very competent at their jobs, they couldn't write reports. You can not get funding if the upper hierarchies and/or bureaucracies don't understand what you are doing and why it is important.

The education system has seen the light and reintroduced teaching punctuation and grammar back into the syllabus but very few people in my age group know punctuation and grammar beyond full stops and commas. Ironically, immigrants who have become fluent often have a better grasp than natives of writing English correctly as they usually study it while learning the language.

I get As in all my classes and I am a good story writer, but when it comes to grammar I really couldn't care less. As long as people get the gist of what I'm trying to say. My vocabulary isn't very big, but simple words work fine for me.

There were times when I had to grade people's essays and most of them couldn't form a proper sentence and would make first grade grammar errors (your and you're, their, they're and there, then and than, it's and its, affect and effect etc.) Thankfully, nowadays I take mostly science classes so we don't have to write essays, we just explode things

nah im pretty shit at spelling... but like im sound at everything else although my background is non-English, English is my first language.. I remember in school we got put into groups of classes due to our ability in speaking reading English.... I think in all honestly if English language was taught.. so like comprehension, grammar, spelling all the way through i would have done a lot worse in English. Instead we learnt English literature so deconstruction, expression (Shakespeare ect) ect... now in uni i flopped a english language exam and got put into a class with esl's :L with that all said i met a lot of people who scored pretty decent in there finals in English that are in that stupid subject and talked to mates who said how damn hard that test was... this shows how fcking stupid the education system in my country is :L (or the test i failed~which was basically correcting a paragraph and filling in close passages whilst everything was timed)
