You may as well watch up to ep 181 to get the next Tsukuyo arc.

The more Gintama you watch, the better it is, really. There's no need to rush it.

Does Gintama actually manage to pull off story arcs then? I'm currently at episode 28 and I'm loving it, don't get me wrong, but it comes off as an really episodic series.

It gets progressively better. And has some really great arcs. Though there are a lot of standalone stories and there isn't much of a main plot line going on.

Gintama is really good but I don't understand why all of it is rated so highly here on MAL.

I could say the same for every other part of the top 100.

I asked this myself after 50 or so episodes, and then it grew on me, and then I became addictive. So addictive that I now HAVE to watch one random episode every night before I go to sleep.

I put Gintama on hold on 25th episode...it was ridiculous and often funny, but I didn't have much motivation to continue watching, because lack of any serious plot put me off...but I might give it a try again, when I am in mood for something less serious.

There are a couple of arcs that are on the more serious side.
