So, this topic is rather for the people who have read the novel and already know what will happen after chapter 5. If you haven't and don't want to spoil yourself, well, you have been warned! xD

Anyway, I've been interested when does this expedition take place. We know it's somewhen between 844 and 845. Do you think it's possible that it's the same expedition that we see in the beginning of the manga/anime? I mean, a lot of facts add up and I think it would fit perfectly. In the novel, even the soundtrack used is the same as the one used for that scene before the opening of the first episode. Heavy rain and fog are also present. That alone is is a big hint, considering this part from the novel:

"In this region, snow does fall in winter, but it rains comparatively little throughout the year. Of course, this meant that sudden heavy downpours, typhoons, and the like were rare—masses of rainclouds that gather as quickly as the one above their heads now couldn't be any less than something that happens only once every few decades. No, it would perhaps be more fitting to call it a weather anomaly that takes place once every few hundred years."

Also, Keith Shadis is the leader of both expeditions, so that fits too. In the anime version of the scene we also see a man resembling Flagon a lot (I'd go as far as to say that he IS Flagon), and of course we see Erwin when Survey Corps returns to Shiganshina (which, as you know, is where they started the expedition in the novel). The result of the expeditions are the same - a seemingly successful operation suddenly turning into a bloodbath.

The only thing that doesn't fit so far is that in the novel, they are trying out the formation on vast plains, while in the manga and anime it takes place inside a dense forest (this, however, can be explained by part of the squad being forced to retreat into a forest).

Also, for this to make sense, we'd have to assume that at least half a year passed between Levi joining the corps and the expedition. The novel says "It had been a few months since Levi's group joined the Survey Corps—finally, the day on which they were to set out on their expedition had come." so it's not that big of a stretch.

All that's left is to wait and see how manga portraits the whole scene and see if the connection between those two events is further hinted at. If it is, then I guess it will make it canon?
