Because SAO is clearly not a rip-off of Otherland.

If only it were as good as Otherland!
But honestly: The premise is not really new and has been done countless times by now.

Yeah, that's my point. I can understand people not liking something but it's incredibly stupid when someone is so assblasted about something that he/she feels the need to resort to insults instead of providing constructive criticism.

let's not forget TRON which is basically the grandaddy of them all, unless you includes alternate worlds then theres lost world and alice in wonderland.

and got to agree it's getting pretty annoying when something gets compared to another show, especially when there no comparison other then a superficial theme (game) or premise (summon into another world), at lest compare it to some thing that close to it like Kaiji

The concept of alternate world as the setting of a literature has existed far before Alice though.

Because a season that has 3 of the best selling light novels ever adapted into anime, and also comes with the restart of Fairy Tail (one of the most popular manga in Jump, is a bad season.

This season sucks because there's just too much consistently popular shit in it.

If only everyone in japan was an unpleasable hipster like yourself. Anime might be good.

Edit: This was at the weak season guy.

true but majority of them are mostly religious mythology, and the only reason i choose those 2 were because they were the more recognizable morden literature out there comparing to you know Otherland :/

I've not read either, I've just seen the episode.

However, so far this series seems mostly the best of a bad bunch. All of the new stuff airing (excluding sequels) just seems to be a bit of a let down so far so it looks good by comparison. The ratings do change as series air though. Also the art definitely helps it.

Why it is popular you ask? Why it is highly rated?

1. Many of us have read the LN/manga and we liked it, so we, after seeing how good did Madhouse adapt it known it will be close to the epicness of the LN/manga.

2. It is about two siblings, which are NEET gamers, being suddenly into a world where everything is decided by games. Add humor, nice characters, a vivid world that screams "scenery porn", some ecchi all adorned with that ending.

3. "It's finally bugged out."

The other first episodes had pacing issues. Felt like they're just trying to shove tons of info in my face. This one flowed pretty well for me other than the falling down from sky part where the god is listing all of the rules.

Show doesn't take place in a "game world" like SAO. This is a fantasy world where everyone is forced to decide things by games, and that is something different.

As for why it is hyped, so far it seems like it is an interesting premise, sort of a mix between Log Horizon and Liar's Game, which should make it entertaining.

Should also add that just because a Light Novel is a best seller doesn't mean that the animation will be great. I greatly enjoyed the SAO light novels, even though I wasn't too keen on the animation (indeed my frustration with the animation is what drove me to read the light novels).

Quite frankly I don't see how NGNL is in any way similar to SAO. The 'trapped in another world' plot device has been around for a long time now. The world of SAO is one big digital world whereas Disboard is also an alternate universe where they play real games.

Shiro is a hiki.
Sora is a NEET.
Hiki=/=Neet.

Sora's 'communication disorder' is that he's a sociopath. He's able to easily read people and says things that pisses them off as shown in his conversation with the inn keeper.

I have not actually read neither the manga or LN.
However, I can say my opinion on it.

To me, I started loving this anime because I can relate to how difficult reality is and how it would be much easier to live life if everyone were to live under a concrete set of rules.
Sure, there is the Bills, Charters, Ten Commandments and other such things, but not everyone's willing to follow it.
So, I like to imagine how life would be like if it were like where Sora and Shiro are now.

Also, I like Sora's manipulative and sarcastic personality.
And Shiro's so cute!! ;3
On a side note, Madhouse is a good studio.

Sora has several girls following him but it's not really as harem.
Dora sort of likes him but she's pretty much a public kicking pole as she's constantly being bullied.
Jibril is more or less a perv so that doesn't count.
I'm not too sure about Izuna but I think that she's more or less clueless.

...and beings like Jibril are pure hax, just how were they fought? - Sora's thoughts on the times before the ten Oaths (Vol.2 Chpt.3)

Yeah, she's kind of broken, however...
LORE SPOILERS AHEAD

But what makes her liked by the readers is the game they have with her, and her personality.

Here's a couple of reasons why.

It involves in actual games, not just some VRMMORPG(Don't get me wrong, I liked SAO).
It's pretty rare to see a badass protagonist these days like Sora and Tatsuya Shiba.
One word: Lolis(people really go apeshit on these ones)
Games.

It's popular in part because the concept of game immersion so enticing. Also, the characters aren't sniveling little shits or bland, soul-less morons. Finally, it's funny as hell, and more than a little clever. Instead of relying on characters who trip over nothing and have vaginas land on their face because lol-powertip-daydream scenarios, the ecchi comedy is served in appropriate doses, is actually funny, and has a sarcastic undertone that makes fun of ecchi comedy. The non-ecchi comedy is even funnier, with jabs at bishounen-ification and even a reference to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

tl;dr It's interesting, it's exciting, and it's laugh-out-loud funny.

The glorification part might be true for some people - but not for all. I definitely don't feel glorified by this - I am well aware that I am and will never be Sora or Shiro and that all the glory in this anime goes to them. I mostly watch the show for the games and characters.

It has fan service, games and funny colours served with 'artistic' (questionable) animation, so naturally every little hipster is all over it. In reality, it's slightly above average.

Is it too much to ask for a logical and somewhat well-told story? I do not want masterpieces every single damn time, I just want more anime that actually do not insult my intelligence by saying "I praise you and your lifestyle even though we all know this is laughable, will you like me now?!"
Stuff like Gingitsune, for example. That simple, straight forward, mediocre and totally fine with me.
