Don't know, but I'm not into self-torture, personally.

I think it might be because something that's bad can sometimes be better than something that's simply mediocre. I mean, a bad anime can at least hold your attention by virtue of how godawful it is, while a mediocre anime often just leaves you with a sense of disappointment.

Because it might get better, but if it doesn't get better, they know better the reason why they hate it so much.

It depends.

Even though I've considered Naruto to be bad for years, I still read because I used to love it, I've spent money on it, and I want to see how it ends (though I'm slowly selling off my volumes)

Fairy Tail is the epitome of "generic shonen", to the point where I want to believe it's a parody at times. But if you shut your brain off, it's easy to enjoy, the art is detailed, it has some cool character designs, Mashima is good at drawing ecchi, and the author is pretty hardworking/appears to be a cool guy.

As for people watching series they know they probably won't like to begin with? I guess it helps you appreciate the greatness more. Watching Witch Craft Works and then watching GITS/Bebop a few hours later makes those seem even better than what they are. It's a strange but welcome feeling.

I'm sorry but One Piece is the epitome of generic shonen.
really, now? it's anything but generic. Fairy Tail is generic, OP is not

Because they're weird. If you don't like it, then stop watching it, right?

Otherwise, they're trying to watch every single anime registered on MAL.

Something that's bad doesn't automatically equals unwatchable.
I watch a lot of bad shows/bad movies and can get enough enjoyment out of them to watch them until the end.
That said: enjoyment doesn't equals quality.

I think judging an entire anime after watching just 3-4 episodes is a little.....unjust?
Now if you're not going to rate it then its fine to quit if you don't like it or you saw something that's a no-no for you.

Maybe they feel the need to finish it? I mean, sometimes I'll put myself through agonizing torture, just so I can finish an anime, if I have like 2 or 3 episodes left. I liked Shakugan no Shana for what it was worth, but after a while I didn't really enjoy it anymore. I wanted to finish it, but I couldn't do it. People that review anime shows and whatnot, watch all of it, regardless of how good it is, so that their review, reviews everything about that particular show. You may also never know if the show redeems itself halfway through the series. I don't think that happens often, though.

I like to watch the weekly crap. I go to my favorite streaming site and choose a video randomly. Just when I finish the first episode I can have a better view of how it will be. Sometimes I continue to watch, even if it's completely shitty. Sometimes I drop, depends on my humor. Also, one episode per week does not hurt.

I can consider an anime to be bad and yet 'enjoy' it: when I say that I enjoy it, it usually means that I'm making fun of all its flaws, like, how else would I have gotten that far into it, right? I can also enjoy something and acknowledge that it sucks: it doesn't take my enjoyment away nor does it make the show automatically better. It did its job, sure, but it's still bad all the same. Even though I said that this barely happens to me so it's mostly me making fun of the anime I watch.

I only do it for shorter series, like Oreimo and Toradora. If I hated something like Bleach as much as those two, then I probably wouldn't finish it, since it would be 300+ episodes of torture, not just 25. Also, I want to watch as much anime as possible and use the whole rating scale on my complete list.

I just don't drop anime.
I don't know what it is but if I start an anime, I intend to finish it. It might be because I'm interested to see if the anime redeems itself. I've never dropped an anime in case it turns itself around or it's just a slow beginner.
If I dropped an anime so easily then I'd miss out on some great series, for example, when I first started watching Code Geass, I really didn't like it but as I watched on it turned out to be one of my favorite series of all time, same applies to the original fma.
