When I read the manga this was one of the stories that left a big impression in me so I was hoping to see it animated! I didn't expect it to be so sinister, but I was satisfied with how it turned out. The big brother was much more grim and odd than how I remember him in the manga, but since in anime the atmosphere is produced by lots of things (moving expressions, voice acting, background music) I think it's great he was presented this way. I feel like I cheated because I already read the manga, by the way, but it's good to have my memories refreshed whenever I watch a new episode. |

Ep 4 idk if I just wasn't in the mood, but this episode just didn't work that well for me. Hopefully next episode is better for me. |

Episode 4 First of all I might be slightly obsessed with the OP. I have troubles watching the episodes because when the OP is over I go back to the start at least a couple of times before I manage to resist the urge and watch the actual episode xD. Secondly, wow, that was an amazing episode, definitely a contender for my favorite of the series too, Yoshi. Amazing atmosphere and everything, I'm really stunned. It was definitely worth abandoning the OP for this ^^. |
I probably regret this post by now. |

Episode 4: I too love the OP to death, but not as much as you Higashi-san :P I completely agree that this episode was excellent though. SO FUCKING ATMOSPHERIC, GOD. I ended this episode in a state of near-delirious enjoyment lol. Just incredible. My favourite thus far :3 Episode 5: So beautiful ;____; Not as good as the last ep, but still utterly gorgeous. Nothing more to say. *blissed out* |

Episode 5 Yeah, the OP is greatness. I've been playing it on my iPod and iTunes constantly. The art is so beautiful. This was probably my least favorite story from all the episodes so far. I still liked the concept behind the mushi in this episode, but wasn't really into the rejected by a crush sadness bit. Anyway, still incredibly enjoyable outside of that. |

Ep 5 Good ep, the story didn't resonate with me that much, but the backgrounds in this ep in particular were really good. |

Episode 5 Like you guys I thought this episode was good, but not as good as most of the others so far. The story wasn't my cup of tea either, but like battosai said the backgrounds were particularly great and overall it was still another awesome Mushishi episode. |

Episode 6: Contender for my favourite ep. I have a massive love for sakura in any kind of creepy/dark/sad setting, so this was totally on-point for me. Absolutely lovely even though the concept was on the more fantastical side for Mushishi (I mean, obviously they're all fantastical, but this was more so, if that makes sense). Actually liked that though, because it fit the atmosphere so well. "Did you know? Under every sakura tree is a corpse..." |

Ep 6 Really liked this ep, pretty dark and kinda freaky. Great art as usual too. I like that Ginko didn't waste time trying to negotiate too long and took the initiative to grab the girl and gtfo. |

Ep. 6 Another great episode! The plot twist with the head was something I had forgotten about and the dark atmosphere really made it much more creepy. Ginko is such a badass for standing in front of a crazy guy with an axe and just trying to reason with him a bit before fleeing. That was too awesome. |

Episode 4 Definitely the darkest episode of the season so far, both in terms of lighting and tone. This was very "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", but luckily, Ginko managed to bring Tatsu back before he became as rotten as his father. Also, nice before and after touches. http://i.imgur.com/tVxYCyC.jpg http://i.imgur.com/wbHkrBM.jpg Episode 5 I see a similarity with the last one, ceasing to exist as a human and just becoming a "thing". Losing your shadow and losing your reflection are both dehumanizing. Although, this time it deals with loneliness, instead of the fear of being weak. They say the eyes are the "mirrors" of the soul and alternatively, you can say they're reflective of your mind state. Masumi's sense of purpose was initially defined by the guy polishing her mirror to the point that she became overdependent on someone whom she may never see again. It's not until she lets go of the mirror that she is able to take control of her life. Rejection is heartbreaking and letting go is difficult, but when we do overcome these obstacles "I guess that shows how strong we are". Lol at Ginko's reaction to Masumi hitting on him and while we're likening eyes with mirrors, they looked dull for the majority of the episode in comparison to a little bit more color in them towards the end. ♫ I can see clearly now... ♫ Episode 6 This reminds me of Dante from the first adaptation of FMA and The Picture of Dorian Gray, which similarly evokes the maintenance of everlasting beauty. At the end of main character's life, he rapidly aged into an elderly old man. For someone who's lived for what seems like an eternity, there's possibly a sort of happiness in death and maybe this is even echoed in Saho's last words "Man…saku…don't. Don't!" In retrospect, it's interesting how the gardener doesn't smile until he hears that the girl is in good health. "Wordlessly, they [flowers] corrupt" Also, like Dorian Gray, this shows how this unhealthy desire for beauty can be a dangerous thing. |

Episode 7 "But you were not at fault and neither were the Amefurashi. It was just an unfortunate twist of fate. Still, you've figured out a relatively good way to coexist with Amefurashi. It isn't all bad." This seems to accurately describe the show as a whole. "Once the rain stops and real tears can be shed…" Poetic stuff. It's a "strange rain", because it's no longer the gloomy "When will this rain… finally end?" of Teru's flashback. The rain that has taken many lives has saved someone, which allows Teru to actually cry again and become at peace with her circumstances. As evidenced by her smile at the end, the curse has become a gift. The close-up of the flourishing greens in the plant life and the tree look more vibrant than any other scene in the episode. "I will continue to drift like the clouds", helping people along the way provides a parallel with Ginko's lifestyle as well. |

Episode 6 Amazing episode indeed, one of the more creepy Mushishi episodes too and the sakura imagery and great art in general just added to the atmosphere. At this point it seems this second season is much darker in general than the first one. |

Episode 7 This episode had a different atmosphere from the previous ones which just, in my opinion, shows how flexible this series can be in what parts of life it represents. I think this is the one episode where Ginko really just watches from the sidelines more than anything else, but it was great to see another nomad that has to constantly move because of a mushi and decides to help people in the meantime. Really liked the fact that despite the woman being rather unhappy about his current fate, she decided to keep a positive mindset instead of focusing on the negative, which is what she did when she was younger. |

Ep 8 [spoiler] Feels like forever since we've had a new episode of this. Anyway I really don't understand how that kid was such a dick. Maybe I wasn't paying attention or something but I think they mentioned it was his step-mom or he was adopted at some point? Anyway Its nice that he saved his mom in the end, but as Ginko showed... theres an easier way lol. |

Episode 8 Snakes On A Ginko and zero fucks given. This piano is wonderful. "The mushi have their own needs and wants. If you bend them to your needs and wants, there will be consequences." Reminds me of the previous episode with how there are some things beyond our control. The mushi aren't something we have "total control" over, but we can merely coexist with them, much like nature itself. It seemed more than just a lack of affection from his step-mother, because even the father quickly blamed the kid for the holes and even called him an ingrate towards the end of the episode. So, he obviously wasn't on good terms with these two to begin with. He finally had a chance to improve his how they saw him with the potential full-time sailor job, but blew it and his family relationship remained unchanged as a result. There may have originally been an easier way, but that's also a route that lacks character growth. And here's to hoping there's an episode next week lol. |

Well damn I'm late to the party, although I'll catch up pretty quickly if I stick to my plan of an ep a day from here out. Not a lot needs to said about the storyline of the eps themselves.... it's Mushishi you know what you're getting. Episode 1: I really enjoyed this episode, initially when I found out it's going to be an episode focusing on sake I was terrified, only because I've seen countless anime do the "sake" ep. It's almost becoming mandatory. Anyway it wound up being a good opening episode. Episode 2; I liked it even more than the first, even if I thought the father was a little foolish on how he acted over the accident. I mean 10 years, damn that's one foolish turnip right there. Overall though I enjoyed the episode, little bird like Mushi in shells, I can't get enough of that. General thoughts much like everybody I love the intro, atmosphere, characters everything. It's as good if not better than the first season. It took me right back 5 years to when I first saw Mushishi, that was awesome. I scored the first season a 9/10 the only reason I gave it a 9/10 and not full marks was because at the time I wished there was more episodes. Now with this I have those episodes. I expect by the end of this I for one will be giving full marks all round. Top drawer. |

Episode 8 Yeah, his mother seemed more surprised than happy that he was still alive. She immediately asked about money and then wanted to sell off the shell he had got for her. I took it that they didn't really care much for him like the other children. I assumed he was adopted or something of that nature when he stated she could never be his real mother. Still, the kid was definitely a d-bag. Ginko was indeed pretty badass as he carried all of those mushi on his body and casually lit up his cig. It was nice to see a heavy does of Ginko in this episode. |

Episode 7 [spoiler] As you guys have mentioned Ginka didn't play much of a role in this except for giving the right advice at the right moment right before the end, but while I missed him it was still a great episode as usual. At first it seemed rather cruel, but turning it into a positive outlook was well done and made me really love the episode. Good stuff. |

Episode 7: An ending filled with hope. ;3; Episode 8: I have a phobia of small holes close together, so this really gave me the fucking willies jesus christ >___< Also, everything brian said. Episode 9: I love the resolution to this episode. It's a different approach to what we've mostly seen so far, of either exorcising the mushi or dying because of them/it. Variety is the necessity of life. Only one episode left. ;__; |

Episode 9 "Please don't ever tell him about my illness. I want him to stay happy, without knowing the truth." "But your mother wished for your happiness until the very end." Nice to have these episodes back to back. This is the loving family Ibuki wished he could have had. Like his mother, Houichi is willing to make any sacrifice to protect his wife and children. While this can be seen as atonement, his inevitable passing would be a tragedy for his family. "I'm no longer an infant who needs protecting." This is the pride talking. After all these years, Houichi's father has lived by Chiyo's wish to protect their son's happiness. Just because he's no longer infant is no reason for the father to not look out for his son's health. The disappearance of the rice fields signals that his protective father eventually got through to him, because parenting never ends. The milk is white like the snow and as harsh as the winter on one's health. But where there is a curse, there is also a gift. While the mushi deprived the mother of her remaining life, it gave the son a future. While the winter snow prevents the rice fields from flourishing, the family became full of joy and laughter. |

Episode 10 The mountains laugh at Ginko. Nice to have a Ginko-centric episode to conclude the first half and the kouki punchline was the icing on the cake. It's quite fitting to end as it began, with a story about kouki. A common theme in Mushishi is that some things are just beyond our control and the episode isn't resolved until Ginko simply goes with the flow. Another idea to bounce off of is how sleep is the cousin of death and everything awakes from their temporary slumber, reinvigorated with life in spring: the season of new beginnings. A shame that we'll have to wait a while for the other 2 episodes due to the production delays, but I'll be looking forward to those whenever they decide to show themselves. Until then… 9/10 |

Ep. 9 This episode started on a nice note but the story about the mother sacrificing her life was a bit disturbing. Loved the fact that it was implied at the end that the guy changed his mind about the way he was doing things. Ep. 10 Nice way to finish off this season! I found Ginko's facial expressions adorable in this episode. That mountain god was a crafty one, seriously. I'm sad this was the last episode, but I'm looking forward to the next season. 9/10 |

Episode 10 This was probably my least favorite episode of the series this season. It was nice to see Ginko as the center, but I always enjoy him when he is in a more active role. He pretty much was just going with the flow all episode. While it was still gorgeous it just wasn't one of my favorites. As for the series, it was greatness, as expected from Mushishi. This season was right there with the first and despite the large gap between the original and Zoku Shou, it felt like it had never left. 9/10, (94%) |

Episode 10 [spoiler] Wow, this might be my favorite episode of the season now that I've seen them all. I was hoping/waiting for an episode that didn't center around people and how they are under the influence of Mushi, but only on the Mushi and nature. It was also interesting to see Ginko not knowing what is going on for once, he is usually quick to figure out what happened but not this time. Only in retrospect did he realize that the mountain lord 'used' him, but no real harm was done so he just went with it. Perfect way to end it with another unique episode. The visuals were also superb, even better than usual as battosai mentioned. I was debating a 9 or 10 before this episode and seeing how this turned out even better than most other episodes, I'll have to go for the 10 here. I MUST. 10/10 (95%). AOTY |

Sorry I'm late posting my thoughts, I've been watching, just been too busy to make time for MAL :P I've gone through everybody's comments with the exception of those for episode 10 as I've yet to watch that but I'm amazed that NOBODY had the same issue I had with episode 3... Episode 3: I enjoyed this episode however I had a small issue with it, early on in the episode Ginko explained how the mushi was only deceiving the guys senses, how although he didn't feel it, he was already showing signs of frostbite. So that means the mushi only tricks the senses and does not prevent the physical effects on the body from the cold. So my question is, how come the man didn't die when he fell into the lake? I know that in water that cold you'd die of hypothermia or freeze to death long before you ever have the chance to drown. What's even more bizarre was that he was under there for ages, like over a day. I was thinking at the time somehow the mushi was protecting him and then I remembered early in the episode that Ginko clearly stated that the mushi offered no protection from the ravages of the cold. Later on it stated he lost some fingers and toes but what a cop out! He should have died! So ya I know I should put it aside and let it go but it really bothered me. Did it bother anyone else? Episode 4: I particularly enjoyed this episode, I liked the premise, the darker tone and the lesson to be learned. I however once again felt cheated in a certain respect, when the birds descended (I thought awesome they're not going to pull any punches here, it also reminded me of the Hitchcock film "The Birds") I expected the man to be pecked to death by the birds, however once again they went for a "happy" ending with the man only losing an arm. I was however to a degree willing to accept the explanation of the mans survival here. I understood the reasoning of how the arm became irresistable to the birds and put my concerns of blood loss etc out of mind. Episode 5: Solid enough episode, I didn't really enjoy the particular mushi in this episode. I didn't find it creepy, mysterious or all that interesting. However the episode went for some solid tactics by showcasing two emotions all people can understand, rejection and loneliness. So while this episode was more relatable in the human aspect, I found the mushi aspect lacking. Episode 6: My favourite episode I've watched thus far (I really enjoyed episode four though also), visually stunning, fresh and interesting idea. Slightly dark, Ginko was decisive and the cherry blossom lady actually perished. A bit macabre but it serves the episode well, unlike previous episodes where we the viewer were asked to accept some pretty ridiculous survivals. Episode 7: Ah the rainmaker episode, we Irish could talk about the rain till we're blue in the face so I'll keep this short. Decent episode, not as good as some of the others but I liked the explanation behind how the mushi worked in this one, yes a bit out there as to be expected but in a way "believable" xD Episode 8: Bird shaped mushi again? Huzzah! For that alone it's a good episode but in all seriousness another solid entry but that's to be expected by the consistent high standards of this anime. Episode 9 Where to begin? What the fuck! I'm not even going to talk about the ending, I'm not even going to talk about the mushi, art or anything else, only one thing needs to be stated.... I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING MORE CREEPY THAN BREASTMILK COMING FROM THAT WOMAN'S EYES! That was me trying to keep my thoughts brief considering I had to discuss all those eps together, anyway did anybody share my concerns? I've had to take some things with a pinch of salt and I've let a lot go, maybe I just hold this series up to ridiculously high standards. Also no idea of the name of the guy who is voicing Ginko now but he sounds a little more serious than the fella that voiced him in the first series. I might sound crazy but the guy in the first series sounded a bit more laid-back which suited Ginko better imho, anyway I'm nitpicking and starting to ramble. |

Re: Episode 3 Can't find the part early in the episode where he states that mushi offers no protection, but there is the part at the end where Toki thinks the snow protected him, to which Ginko responds "…No." Ginko is not denying that it acted as a protective layer (of course, this doesn't make him impervious to cold, but it shelters him from the added intensity of the below freezing water and also explains why he showed no signs of drowning. Basically, his situation was no different than as if he was on the surface and he was already suffering from frostbite in the beginning, so he would've fell victim to a more severe condition regardless), but that it was doing more harm than good. You sound like you have zero suspension of disbelief, I would hate to be you lol. Re: Episode 4 Killing off the kid completely is driving a home a rather cynical message that it's impossible to escape the trappings of family. Although the first season had seen darker endings, I don't think it was ever a cynical show. Re: Episode 6 Did she "perish" though? She looked like she was in more pain while she was "alive", so in this case, death is liberating. Sounds like a happy ending to me. |

Brianwuzhere Episode 3: 10 minutes almost exactly in.... here comes the quotes Ginko: "Can I take a look at your hand" Toki: "Here" Ginko: "(His hand is so cold. He can't even tolerate human body temperature)" "Your skin's turned white. You're getting frostbite. Even though you don't feel it, your body is suffering. If you don't warm yourself up, you will lose your hands and feet." I think I have pretty good suspension of belief, it's only this episode that really bothered me, when you factor in what Ginko said above ^^ it seems like that man should have lost a little more than some fingers and toes :P I wish his injuries had been a little more extensive, he got off a bit light if you ask me. Anyway I'll chalk up my frustration on that episode to being too exact, but hey Ginko's word is Gospel xD Higashi_no_Kaze that makes a lot of sense. His voice did sound more laid back in the first series and that probably was because of the female VA, I'm actually pretty satisfied with the new guy too. I was really nitpicking on that point lol. I'm going to watch Ep 10 tonight, really looking forward to it. |

Episode 10: Episode 10: Overall a solid episode, better than most but certainly weaker than some in my opinion. The story on this one is a little flat. It felt as if this episode was just an excuse to show off its great animation, at least that's the vibe I was getting to a small degree. Also do we know why there wasn't a second season sooner? Or why episodes on this season have been delayed to production issues? I may be completely wrong but I found the writing this season on some episodes a little weak, it might just be after the original series they were fresh out of ideas or just exhausted. I'm only speculating. Anyway this season thus far at least (it's never wise to make a judgement on something until it's finished but I'll do it) has not been quite as good as the first series. I'd give the slight edge to the first season as I felt it churned out more consistency. Also episode 9 of this season is easily the worst out of every mushishi episode from my point of view, it had moments that belonged in a sick fetish hentai, not in an anime of this caliber. Overall the episodes for this season for me are somewhere between an 8/10 and 9/10... considering I gave the first season a nine, I'll give it again on this in the hope that the latter half might become a little more consistent and elevate its tone. It sounds like I'm pointing out only the things I didn't like so I better mention the things I did quickly, they've already been said by everybody already though... fantastic intro, magnificent animation, brilliant atmosphere, Ginko, wonderful music that really compliments the anime, also episodes like 4 and 6 are among the finest ever for this anime. Anyway it's inspired me to rewatch the first series, so that's a good sign. That's my mini-rant over xD |

Episodes 11 & 12 What a pleasant surprise seeing this special on my crunchyroll feed. This continues with the darker themes from the first half of the season. Two pretty fucked up situations and Ginko can't really do anything about it. The soul battle was pretty cool, as was the animation throughout. It definitely did it's job getting me excited for the second half of the season. 9/10 |

Episodes 11-12 Agreed, this was definitely one of the darker episodes and even rekindled some fond memories of Flowers of Evil during the fantastically animated sequences of the Sanekuimushi. Much of the episode dealt with Kumado's isolation and towards the end, it even begged the question "A being who has lost his soul and yet continues to move through the world of the living...what might such a thing be?" Kumado is soulless and in turn, should be lifeless, but he's becoming somewhat revitalized due to his interactions with Tanyuu. "His soul has become frozen. However, with time...his soul should thaw." Tanyuu's final lines are especially memorable and I find it even applies to Ginko as well. "Even if our circumstances do not change, we are not alone." Took me a while to get around to this one, but another 9/10 for me. |

Ep 11-12 [spoiler] Extremely interesting episode. It never crossed my mind that mushi-shi themselves would sacrifice their souls in order to better fight mushi. I guess it really wasn't a choice in Kumado's case though. Making artificial Mushi out of kouki is also very interesting. Great concepts, I enjoyed the hihamukage episode a bit more though. 8/10 |
