Wonder who Reiji will choose. He's been with Ein for a while but he probably feels really bad for what's happened to Cal. Sweet episode though.

I really hope Reiji mans up and does something about this. Obviously he isn't going to just let Cal kill him. I think in the process of Cal "torturing" him before she kills him, Sythe will do something to betray Cal for his own benefit, thus causing her to learn the truth.

Overall, not much progress, but hopefully Mio will be out of the way soon seeing as her situation is dragging on.

Personally, I think that the best ending is Ein and Drei dead. That way Reiji can live knowing that his lack of communication was the cause of those deaths. Personally though, they all need to die: SM, Lizzie, Shiga, Ein, Zwei, Drei, and Inferno head.

As much as I don't want to see Ellen or Cal die, I think your right. It might be a better ending if they both die. SM should be killed, preferably by Ellen since she was his first "creation" and he claims she cant kill him. The end would leave Reiji alone, by himself, just like how he was introduced.

Either that or the three join forces, fight SM's other "phantoms" + inferno dieing in the process. As the ED always says "We are ghosts that cannot exist anywhere".

As for this episode and Cal...her personality is a bit more clear. Her nativity is worse then I originally thought but there's clearly something else bugging her that may or may not be related to Reiji per say. The ally scene with the moaning music makes me think she was "used" when Reiji left her. She may be blaming him for the stuff that happened while she was alone with SM. This is just an assumption but maybe SM's plan to make her hatred grow for Reiji was to throw her into situations that she wouldn't have encountered if Reiji was around protecting/supporting her. Again that's just an assumption that I originally dismissed when someone mentioned prostitution in the last thread, but after watching this episode and seeing 4 or 5 hints it made me reconsider the possibility that maybe Cal was put through hell while Reiji was gone.

Also did they try to make Japan look like some holy church where there's no violence, and the only ones bringing that to the holy land are horrible uncivilized Gaijins? Are they trying to say that the US (since most of the action takes place there in the beginning) is a fucked up country where people can shoot anyone they want whenever they want?

Well a crime can happen everywhere but truly no other developed country has so many guns and pullets flying around as the U.S. You can't say they are completely of. The possibility of someone coming in to your store with a gun trying to rob you are 10 times more in the U.S than Japan or Europe.

Anyway about the episode. I was a little disappointed because there wasn't as much development as i would have liked.
Ellen didn't fall for the little play of Cal. Actually she really gave her a harsh pep talk.
And Cal is full of it. All that scary talk is nothing since she doesn't really seem to me like she wants to kill Reiji. She doesn't even hate him. She's just releasing her frustration. If she wanted to kill him she should have already done it by now. All that "Am gone a torture you first" staff looked to me more like "I can't pull the trigger" staff. So basically she's just lost.
But she might develop a new hate for Reiji because of jealousy of his relationship with Ein. Women to get jealous easily. I guess we will have to wait and see about that.
I have a feeling that in the end she will be the one killing Scythe Master and maybe dying from fighting those other phantoms if the series isn't afraid of the non completely happing ending.
And Mio disappearing and appearing behind a tree was really the biggest screw up they made in Phantom until now. I hope in the Blu-ray,DVD versions they fix this thing.
For the end i want to say that i thought the episode was gone a end and we wouldn't hear the famous by now porn theme but the creators obviously didn't want to disappoint us. lol. Maybe they can put a male voice there also, screaming "Yeah you like it bitch, don't you?" and our porn experience will be full.

Blame Reiji's sudden stupidity for being unable to stick 2 words together to explain to Cal the whole thing instead of mumbling: "Cal" this; Cal "that" like he was a mummy or something. Can't blame the guy though, either he was at a loss of words due to Cal's petrifying hotness, or he was profoundly shocked because no more LOLI for him ;p

I thought moaning BGM was already around back when Clau was still kicking - and it sorta suits em both considering their rack :) .. I can more or less live with it .. the other Cal theme music is pure awesome

if Cal dies - Ein must die as well IMHO .. either that or all 3 live .. but Reiji will probably live anyhow .. Ein should kill SM - or Lizzie - or Shiga .. someone should kill the Sephiroth wannabe from Inferno too

Awesome episode as always. The slow pace of the episode doesn't bother me, really, after all, rushing things and putting in violence and gunfights just for the sake of it might really ruin the anime.

Anyways, for those who think that Reji is indecisive: if someone would be asked to choose between his wife and kid, I'm not sure what else remains than to be indecisive. Cal's hate for Reji is not mainly because Reji abandoned her; her hate is more so driven by the fact that Reji abandoned her for another woman and is living a peaceful student life. Reji loves Cal, not in the sense of a lover but maybe as a younger sister. Cal loves Reji, though her true feelings towards him seem a bit hazy to me [does she love him as a older brother, a mentor or as a lover?].

Also regarding the ending, it's gonna be a bloodbath, that's for sure. I'd very much like a happy ending though given the way the anime has developed over this span of 22 eps, it kinda seems difficult. Of course, those who have played the game or read the manga[?] might be in a better position to drop hints. ;-)

This is all IMHO, of course. :-)

Yup, I live in Europe and there's far more, and better, firearm control than in the US. But the way they keep repeating this just makes me wonder if they're talking about fact or prejudice. It's not like you can get killed in a popular restaurant or a church that easily in the US. Cal must be portrayed as another barbarian Gaijin who doesn't know anything or care about Japanese traditions and is going by her uncivilized foreigner ways. :p (And seeing how eccentric she's right now, that description suits her)

Also saying something like "This is Japan you can't start a firefight" is different from saying "This isn't Inferno territory [by extension the US] etc..." But I'm probably just paranoiac and thinking too much. :D

IMO, saying "This is Japan" is pretty much the same as saying "This isn't Inferno territory". They both make a point that they are in foreign waters where they can't cover up their crimes as easily as they would with the use of connections/corruption.

I'm also glad I'm not alone in thinking that moaning bgm is just... blah. Sounds really awkward when used. I'm looking forward to the conflict happening soon as well as the introduction of Scythe's phantom group... Zahlen Schwestern was it?

I was really irritated by InfernoSubs taking "editorial license" in this one. Nobody ever said anything like "fucking," "Jesus Christ," "goddamn," etc. Also seeing the internet meme "feels good man" completely distracted me from an important Cal conversation. What the fuck guys, just do your fucking job and stop messing around.

This is called localization. Could you really not pick up that Cal's language is EXTREMELY raw and abusive? Count the "kuso"s (shit) in the episode and then consider what they mean. And the translation has to mirror this.

Example: As reaction to hearing that Shiga had forbidden her to take action against Reiji/Elen due to the Mio blackmail, Cal yells "Fuzakenna!". To translate this, the context is important. Used for example in a "kind" setting like Bamboo Blade (when Dan introduced his ridiculously gorgeous girlfriend) it can be the normal "You got to be kidding!". But said in this tone, with Cal's general disposition, it _is_ "Fuck!".

Well, Ein Vs Call was predictable from way back when when Cal appeared in this series...

I think Cal and Regi will go against each other but Regi is the better "phantom" assassin.

This episode was good, the series is turning out to be pretty good too...

Much more interesting than the last two or three episodes, except that the first scene was absolutely ridiculous and over-expected once again, we simply can't feel anything with such a bad setup. Except from that, it was quite nicely directed even if slow, with relatively interesting developments.

Earbleed again with ALI PROJECT, and why the heck FUNimation had to chose several incompetents seiyus to voice the main characters? Its so hard to sympathize with Cal or either Reiji, the park scene where she slaps his face seems so non-beliavable and with so much lack of emotion that disgust me. Anyway its really sad to know that the ending is extremely predictable, only 4 episodes left and the main cast didn't even had time to build a relationship.

And i dont really think Reiji will die>_< If he does elen is probably going to die with him
Since episode 18, elen said she doesnt want to be in a world without reiji's existence. So this ending would be very rare. unless they both die O_O ....

^ That's an assumption. Just because it happened in the VN (depending on if you accept Cal's confession) doesn't mean in happened in the anime.

IMO, nothing in the anime implied that they slept together. We didn't see them in bed together, Cal was in her own bed asleep after the show scene, Reiji was sitting on his own bed, beds were made (except for Cal's, but duh, she's sleeping in it) and they were both fully dressed.

I am basing it on whitening of the screen after the shower scene. And unless it is told otherwise (in other words, contradicts the anime story), the info from VN is canon for the anime story as well IMO.

It can be interpreted in any way people wish, but the fact remains: Cal's and Reiji's relationship was deeper then brother-sister.

qft
This is neither a game or VN, so it didn't have to happen here... There is absolutely no evidence it happened. I don't even see anything pointing out on that. After all, Reiji seeing naked girls in this show is normal :)

What's also "canon" is that if you don’t accept Cal's confession, they don't have sex.

You're really basing that on because the scene faded to white? It's an effect that's been used in many times in many entertainment genres. It makes the scene more dramatic, special, and sometimes tragic. It was a big moment for both of them, they both opened up and Cal found out that Reiji needs her. But that doesn't mean they had sex afterwards. Nothing in the scene after shows any trace of if they did. They are on separate beds, Cal is asleep, and Reiji is fully dressed. Why would he need to get fully dressed after having sex? He had nothing to do afterwards. Many things could have been shown to prove that they did have sex, but there isn’t one single thing to suggest that they slept together.

People can have a deeper bond than brothers and sisters and have it not be a sexual relationship.

Moreover, look at Cal; she looks and acts like a 10 year old. Her hair is in pigtails, she plays dress-up, and she's still playing with hand puppets. I just can't see Reiji taking advantage of Cal like that.

Unless it's specifically stated that they slept together, you are just speculating because of what happened in the VN (again, depending on if you accept Cal's confession)

If you consider boobs fondling=SEX then time to "Ah uh oh yeah!!!" But their scene is even heavier implied than that of Cal's because they're already on top of each other, in a closed room, no proof of them being interrupted so yeah, it's SMEX for you ;)

Regarding comrade Nayrael VS. LadyOrihime.... Damn, too many VS.(s) these days... It does depend on how you interpret the scene, but please remember one thing: The Japanese are master of ambiguity as well as perversity. In other words, they, 95% of the time, always try to put dirty but well disguised things in their anime, Cal looked like a LOLI and since feminists are raging over LOLI(s)' matter recently, do you really think they're gonna show you a 20-years-look-alike and a 10-years-look-alike on top of each other? Not even Kodomo no Jikan, one of the heaviest LOLI packed manga, dare to have that kinda scene...So the best they can do is having Reiji smiling at a naked Cal then put a random vapored shower scene out of nowhere, like those censored screens you can find in Tenshi Dokuro whenever some gore happened. Otherwise, why do you think they even bother putting some close-in to the shower with water dripping down?

Where does it go white and where does it imply they had sex? I just watched 19 again and there was no white after she got out of the shower. She stands up looks outside of the tub and then they immediately cut to a scene where she is sleeping in her bed and talking to herself. Reiji is sitting on his bed in the same exact clothes he was in when she was in the shower. Now if he was missing an article of clothing or the bed looked messed up then sure, I'd agree with you. But in this case nothing was implied so get over it, they never had that kind of relationship even if she loves him.

Yeah, grabbing her boob, kissing her, then laying her down on the coffee table as she is opening herself to him, and her gasping...it's pretty clear what they are doing and will be doing XD

So the best they can do is having Reiji smiling at a naked Cal then put a random vapored shower scene out of nowhere, like those censored screens you can find in Tenshi Dokuro whenever some gore happened.

Or they could have had them in bed together, as Cal is sleeping curled up next to him and Reiji has the monologe in his head (this scene would have been very sweet)

Or they could have shown Reiji walking towards Cal in the shower, and then cut to the nozzle and then the scene fades to white as he is softly saying "Cal..."

Or Reiji can be seen getting dressed as Cal is sleeping.
But again, why would he need to be getting dressed if he isn't going anywhere?

I'm sure there are other scenario's the could have used to imply/show they had sex and not have it be smutty and make it look like Reiji is a pedo, but those are the top three I can think of right now.

Otherwise, why do you think they even bother putting some close-in to the shower with water dripping down?

It was just a dramatic way of ending the scene. When a scene fades to white when it looks like a character is about to die, you think "oh no!", but then we go to the next scene and said character is fine. It's the same thing here. At first glance, it *might* (but really, it didn’t to me) have looked like they were going to, but the next scene just shows that a clothed Cal is sleeping happily in her own bed, and Reiji is fully dressed and sitting at the end of his perfectly made bed.

On a more serious note, yeah, your right, I guess I also gotta blame Persona(s) with their "intimate moments" for making my brain the way it is now... <_<

LOL! I'm sorry XD But you can't deny either scenario's 1 or 2 would have been great, especially for RxC supporters ;) Hell, I probably would have gushed over it myself if that first scenario of mine happened, and I'm a RxE supporter XD

I dont think they would ever try to imply that directly or hint at it like you mentioned. Since the its anime after all, and loli factor. Plus mainly! they would lose alot of drama in the whole Ellen v.s Cal for Reiji in this third chapter I think, since if they implied it then ellen wouldn't of been given a chance at all, this anime has about keeping the viewer guessing, So to keep it safe they just went with the middle ground.

The shower scene was ambiguous.. we dont know what happened directly after it. Overwise they wouldn't of used the shower as the stage for this talk and show a naked cal looking at reiji. It could of been just as Dramatic and touching with-out that. But they went with the Shower and the naked Cal.. and add in flashing to the white screen so the whole ending to the scene is ambugious... Which I think the anime team was going after. They dont want to so much imply that they had sex but they wanted to 'put it up into the air'

But that doesn't mean they had sex afterwards. Nothing in the scene after shows any trace of if they did. They are on separate beds, Cal is asleep, and Reiji is fully dressed.
Well I think if they had sex. It would of been in the shower. Given how reiji and cal walked up to each other, how could they resist and go to the bed.. lol But yea we dont know.
Why would he need to get fully dressed after having sex? He had nothing to do afterwards.
He does do most of his work at night, what is to say he wasn't going to do some small job. We dont know what Reiji was going to do or not going to do at the time.
Many things could have been shown to prove that they did have sex, but there isn’t one single thing to suggest that they slept together.
Based on just the anime it isn't definate, but the shot of reiji and Cal looking at each other was pretty dam intimate as they could get. With-out going as far as to lose the un-predictable side and to keep us guesssing in the current timeline of ths show on who would reiji choose.

I dont think you can disregard the VN totally, Its the base for everthing in the anime. The anime team has been following the VN so closely. The flash to white.. was a bit of up in the air.. it did give VN readers something, to give off the feeling that, mabye 'it' happened.

So while not definate the scene was made ambiguous for a reason, thats my take on it.

Probably unlike the others, I actually gone from "don't care about cal" to "whee, I like her" when she's shown as unstable psycho frenzy biker-chick in this ep. Still, Ellen is better developed character for me and thus she have my symphaty, but show gained in my eyes. I wonder if in next 4 eps it'll come to my top5, or they'll screw it up :p

There was a scene where Cal walked into the room naked, smiling and asking for a towel. Do you think they had sex after Reiji hung up on Lizzie?

Reiji and Cal didn't walk up to each other. Cal just opened the curtain and gave him a smile and Reiji appeared in the doorway and smiled at her. Smiling does not = sex. She's just that comfortable with herself because she's a kid.

He does do most of his work at night, what is to say he wasn't going to do some small job. We dont know what Reiji was going to do or not going to do at the time.

The point is there was no need for him to be completely dressed. If he had any intentions of going anywhere afterwards, he wouldn't be having an epiphany at the end of the bed. He is just sitting there, talking to himself. If he had a job to do, he would have woken Cal up and told her. It wouldn't have left her without saying anything. We aren't shown any previous scene to imply that Reiji had a job to do, or had anywhere to go.

If they really wanted an ambiguous scene, they would have shown him getting dressed. At least at the end of the bed, having his epiphany with his shirt off.

Based on just the anime it isn't definate, but the shot of reiji and Cal looking at each other was pretty dam intimate as they could get. With-out going as far as to lose the un-predictable side and to keep us guesssing in the current timeline of ths show on who would reiji choose.

Not really. Cal looks like a kid who just got a double-scoop ice cream cone. She wouldn't be all giddy looking if she was just about to have sex. That's just not how it happens. She does, however, have a reason to look like that because Reiji said he would stay with her.

I dont think you can disregard the VN totally, Its the base for everthing in the anime. The anime team has been following the VN so closely. The flash to white.. was a bit of up in the air.. it did give VN readers something, to give off the feeling that, mabye 'it' happened.

There is just no where during Cal's loli time where Reiji thinks of Cal as a woman he can make love to. With the way she acted back then, I hope to GOD he wouldn't. He completely treated her like a kid sister.

And like I've been saying in almost every one of my posts, you have to choose whether or not to have sex with Cal. It doesn't just happen. Either you choose to make love to her, or you just remain friends. The choices you make in the VN ultimately determine the outcome. When Cal first appears before Reiji, the scene my choice of “leave to think about things” (or something like that) lead to where he was just walking home with Sanae and Cal shoots off her ribbons (I think it was)

Another example is Elen, in the VN, doesn't tell Reiji to go after Mio and give her an answer. It's then that Elen tells Reiji who she is, and her plan. They then go to the church together.

Where some of the scenes take place is also different. So no, the anime is not closely following the anime.

If you want to keep on believing that they might have had sex, feel free. Maybe they did it the same way they did in the VN: You choose to have sex with Cal or not, and in the anime, you choose to believe Reiji had sex with Cal or not. I can see why a RxC fan would want to believe they did.

Though, that damn music box is getting annoying, but I think I understand its motivation.

Let me correct this one.

You don't choose to have sex with her. You choose to whether you go to her ¨world¨ or not. If you choose to be friends with her there's no promise about being together forever, but Reiji still want's her to be safe.(I'm not 100% sure about this cause I usually accept it :))
But if you accept it Reiji decides to go her ¨world¨ and to stop being an assasin(like in start of episode 17). Also there's that dialogue about him being dead person before meeting her and the most important part: the promise to be together forever. In anime Reiji accepted the confession, but the bonding moment was cut or should I say left for viewers imagination.

The point is that them having sex is not something that just automatically happens. You can still get to chapter 3 even if you don't have sex...so it's not something that will effect the outcome of the story.

One thing I have to say, though...was Cal's confession supposed to be a love confession? Or was it just her confessing that she wants to stay with Reiji and become his assistant as an asassin? The latter is what I got from episode 16. So even then, that doesn't mean they had sex. She was just a little kid to him; putting his hand on her head as he did in episode 17 is a gesture to console a child (there are SO many scenes like this is anime's between a kid and an adult) You don't do that to the woman you are sleeping with, LOL.

Confession part was pretty much same in both. She told him she wanted to be with him and to become his assistant so they could be together.
Well, it's not really a love confession but you could also see it as one. ;)

Of course I do. When I ever said the opposite? Psycho bitch is a compliment & it's what Cal is. I said that I hate her songasm, not that I hate her. >_> And the only pyscho bitch in my sig is Revy, btw. So what the hell are you saying? lol.

I hate the song with the moaning. Completely unnecessary for this show I think. I am excited for the next few episodes. I know it's going to have some great action/suspense...well at least I think it will.

@ LadyOrihime

It seems you do interpet scenes different than I do, Dispite your take on things I still find the scene quite intimate and a bit ambiguous.

They could of had sex, but also they might not of. Though I cant comment much on the VN since I have't played it all yet. But people have said that the core of the show is following the anime fairly closely, mabye not closey as in scene for scene.
