Dem flashbacks. So this happened four years ago. So much anxiety ;.;

Mayu is put on quite the pressure...I feel a bit sorry for her. Seriously, "idol first, human second"? WHAT?

Wet Up Girls
I really do wonder how many episodes will detail the upcoming festival at this point.

What a past for Mayu. That's even more of a reason why i want WUG to do well than I-1 Club.

Now, knowing Mayu's past, I still don't get why her mother's face was never shown before. Probably there is something more with her story.

Whoah... I watched this right after the latest Golden Time, so I'm on a feels trip tonight. Got even more appreciation for Kaya now.

It was obvious that the idol culture's "no romance" rule would be relevant to the plot at some point, but the fact that they tied it into Mayu's backstory in such an indirect way was interesting. Funny thing though, since it wasn't Mayu herself that got caught with a boy, she, along with the rest of WUG, can still count as "pure" in the eyes of this anime's idol otaku viewers. Deconstructing idol culture tropes on an in-story level while playing them straight on a meta level? Yamakan, you magnificent bastard, I read your book!

I also liked the ties to the region that this episode displays. It seems somewhat unusual for an anime to identify with a particular region beyond featuring some background views and landmarks, but in this anime not only do they explicitly name the city, but also openly reference the Tohoku earthquake and its lasting effect on the place. This episode also features the first time Tohoku dialect was used in the show (as far as I've noticed), in Kaya's writing on that buoy. Instead of "ganbatte" she writes "ganbappe", with "ppe" being a Tohoku emphatic particle (I learned about it from Kimi no Iru Machi).

Nice episode, pretty much what I expected, Mayu confessed, her confessing is what finally broke down the barriers with the remaining squad members.

Now they are ready to do what it takes to win, so we should expect some serious improvement the next episode or two. I am hoping that the animation will also have a serious quality leap forward as well. Ultimately the battle is going to come down to that between robots (I-1) and friends (WUG), and what fans really want in their idols. The producer is every bit the pr1ck we all thought him to be, but that is what AKB48 is like in reality, it would be nice if this show helped to kill off that disgusting corporate monster.

They cleared out all the drama, we really don't need to see them training to improve, my hope is that they start next episode with the first round of the competition. They don't need to be perfect yet, but it would be nice to have 3 or so battles with improvement each step, they won't of course compete directly with I-1 this season, they might not even win the competition (that could be left to OVAs), but my hope is that they do win and then turn down the record offer (since it would be attached to I-1's producer - and they literally would be selling their souls), settling instead to go directly to their fans (as represented by that one Otaku) and make it on their own.

About time we get to see when Mayu joined 1-1 Club and how she got fired. However, wasn't Mayu in some sort of relationship with a guy. I mean back then in that interview the guy brought up the topic and he got beat up by the Manager so we didn't get to hear much about it.

We also got to see a bit of back story from Kaya as well which is nice to see. Hopefully there is more singing in the next episodes.

The balance seems odd. Sometimes it is throwing in trademarks, sometimes it is leaving others out. At one point it goes in too deep emotionally, at another time it looks shallow.
I get the impression that this series was written and released prematurely. It does a far better job at dealing with several important characters at the same time than Photo Kano (I might lack an example), but it breaks apart in the same manner KC does, first tearing up emotional issues and then resolving and healing them completely until a new challenge appears.
Thinking that way the show becomes disappointing, but actually it is still good. A bit surprising, since I would approach it in a slightly different manner.

Thx @ vonPeterhof for explaining "ganbappe". I also noticed it, but I couldn't make a sense out of it :-)

An Enjoyable background reveal on Mayu AND Kaya .. and we get Mayu's past (or at least a portion of it) Mothers blames her for everything too seemingly.. Well it appears the group even nanami is 'united' so forward they will now go and well see how far they get - Though as far as I-1 goes I wonder what Shiho meant by trouble.. trouble for them because Mayu acted like a human and tried to help someone and Shiho one a weekly single (Weeklies honestly are a poor judge compared to the Monthly or Bimonthly charts .. those show what is staying popular not popular for a few days than 'meh' )

I honestly feel the show is being underrated by several simply because it isnt IM@s *shrug*

Her mom must be crazy! I don't get what she's saying, but I think she's blaming Mayu.

And Mayu finally told her secret to everyone. Well not everyone, since the other five where just evesdropping. With this and Nanami deciding to stay at WUG have broken the barriers and got much more closer.

The time they spent their was worth it and they have bonded much more. That I-1 guy is truly a jerk.

The episode is pretty good. I'll rewatch this when the subs are out. And I only realize today that a decent fansub group picked up WUG.

We'll probably see the girls perform on the festival on the last two episodes.

Goodluck, WUG!

There was a picture of her with someone, but that wasn't why he got beaten up. What happened with Mayu is that when she was fired they didn't give a reason, so people started inventing reasons, including of course assuming that she had a boyfriend. Japanese tabloids are not above faking such things for a story (a famous one I read about was a star baseball player who was walking down the street in Tokyo when a porn start ran up and grabbed his hand. Of course there just "happened" to be a photographer there).

They haven't explained the picture, but I have the feeling that it was her father (after the divorce) or something. She looks happy in the picture like meeting someone after a long time instead of meeting a boyfriend or something.

I wouldn't say crazy. They had moved to Tokyo to support Mayu, so I imagine that as a family they had sacrificed a lot of economic security, which in turn helped to create some problem between her parents ending in divorce. And then after all that sacrifice Mayu (notice that she had been sewing Mayu's dress, at the beginning they parents probably had to pay for their dresses), in defending someone else, ended up getting fired the moment when everything was going to work out.

While it may not be fair to blame Mayu for it, it certainly is understandable.

So bottom line is, she was forced out because she talked back to her boss, who viewed them as trash, in defense of her friend. Then in order to justify her being forced out, the management made it look like a high-stakes center battle.

The chart must have been manipulated to justify Mayu's firing (a lot of big production companies do this) not to mention the 2nd single would definitely have the advantage since newer single tends to have the advantage of shooting up the chart very quickly due to it being new, especially if it's from a popular group.

Damn I wanna punch that Shirasaki guy really badly. I know that romance is forbidden (some groups actually have contract that said they can date only a few years after debuting) but the "fire indiscriminately" policy was too harsh. I mean Rino Sashihara, a former AKB48 member was caught in a huge sex scandal (worse than having boyfriend) but the most she got was shunned to HKT48 (hardly a punishment imo). There are also others who were transferred to team K or team B due to some problems but most of the time it's not permanent.

That's because an idol having a boyfriend (or having sex) is merely a marketing problem, these groups are marketed as the girls being like the "girl next door" and approachable, so while they have to pretend that they are "offended" by such action, it is more a matter of pretending to be above reproach.

The real sin in such groups is not doing something wrong, but in becoming too popular. Such groups "graduate" popular idols because the last thing they want is for an individual to become too popular. I forgot her name, but there was that AKB member who was forced to graduate because she had won 2 national votes and had threatened to win a third.

This is one of the reasons I hate these large group idols (and for what it is worth Japan did not invent this concept, Meundo, the Latin America boy band was a pioneer in this concept): they are corporate constructions that treat their talent like pond scum, the last thing these corporations want is for an individual to become too big.

But Mayu was fired because she went against that Shirasaki guy. Sure becoming popular can be a problem but Atsuko Maeda became AKB's center for a good 6-7 years before quitting (or being forced to step down depending on what you believe).

Plus getting caught with a boyfriend isn't always a bad thing. That Rino Sashihara even managed become AKB's newest center despite the scandal and being pushed to HKT. There are also others who were forced to graduate or demoted to "trainees" after getting caught with a boyfriend but eventually forced themselves back into the main group by re-auditioning or through fan support. Of course not everyone had such a rosy path, some graduated and never seen again but in I-1's case it's like once you're done, you're done. No 2nd chances.

Well it was a nice touch to have the group make up in Kesennuma. It was in ruins but everyone's trying to get back on their feet, slowly but surely. Just like how WUG almost fell apart but now they've resolved to work together to be the best ^^

Glad we got to see what really happened with Mayu, it wasn't anywhere near as scandalous as I thought. It was the manager shutting down anyone who dared to try and usurp is authority basically.

Hoping to see them win in the Idol Festival, but that's wishful thinking. They still have a long way to go to be good enough to do that.

Mayu should be proud about being kicked from I-1 for standing up for what she believes.

I found the Mayu - I-1 story to be a little underwhelming... perhaps because it was dragged on for so long as if it was a big deal, when it really wasn't anything unexpected. It was still a nice episode though.

I didn't really understand the scene with Tange at the bar, or why the bartender was so uncomfortable.

Or Kaya's backstory. She lost her parents when she was little, and her aunt raised her. Then there was a boy that taught her to work hard? A boat that drifted away with important things that ended up in Alaska? What? I didn't get how that made her want to work hard for those who couldn't.

Finally, this is the episode I've wanted for so long, and I honestly found it to be the best episode thus far, not even counting the Mayu-centric parts; Kaya just played her part so well and now (hopefully) we truly have all of the girls going all-in on Wake Up Girls.

C'mon, three more episodes; make 'em all have as much quality as this episode did (episode eight was a bit all over the place personally)~

I believe that the authors were able to do more for the plot, give more time to engage and explain the facts, before and after.
However, I find it interesting both points of view, dialogue believable most of the time, sin is ending.
Drawing that for once does not worsen over time.

Really enjoyed the heartfelt talk between Kaya and Mayu. I think even despite how much of a prick the I-1 president is, he did make a good albeit depressing point about the masses see celebrities and idols as their profession first and regular human beings second.

Ohhh boy, Nanami was fired up by that. Got a good laugh when they fell into the water. They're much closer now than 9 episodes ago and it really shows.
