Wow that was brutal. Guts was born after his mother died and his adoptive mother died so his adoptive father tries to kill him? Harsh ;o

Yeah Guts has a pretty bad past, but at least he gets to have a water fight with a naked Griffith! Talk about bonding.

I feel a lot of shit happened in this episode...without making the pacing seem out of wack.

A water fight, a lot of what I can only imagine is epic foreshadowing, a flashback, an epic battle or two, and a time skip.

hmph they got rid of the rape scene not surprising since a lot of things in this anime seems to be censored
PS. Guts childhood just shocked me I don't think there's any other character that's suffered quite as much as guts here

Guts's past was pretty damn depressing, even with the censorship.

Griffith and Guts having a water fight. Not gay at all...

It irks me so much when in the end of the episode Guts faces a guy with a lance and beats him by slicing him up with the mid point of his sword. The lance he had looked like 2 metre's long and even though Guts's sword is at least 2 meters or a bit longer than it, he somehow managed to slice him in the ribs without getting stabbed in the chest. Luckily this bothers me only a little, imagine if someone who studies medieval times as a major would feel like watching this...

I knew his past was messed up, but this episode showed it rather well, I wonder how he got out of that pack of hungry wolves all the while having an arrow through his back.

Hahaha, I forgot how much I enjoyed the intro to this.
I liked the entirely horizontal movement when the kid knocked Guts into the water. We're also seeing more about his past. Jeez, must've sucked.

No! Jesus.

I don't really understand what is Gut's problem with the horses he just cuts in half.

Those words are like death itself. Guts had to endure a cruel hell during his childhood.

So, could someone explain me how Gambino came to the resolution to kill his wife's "adoptive son"? At first, I thought he couldn't bear his crippled life and was pushing Guts to kill him. But no... and the sudden lust to kill him is illogical too. ^^"

Excellent show so far, and this was an especially great episode. So well balanced with the lighthearted water fight contrasted against Guts's dark backstory. I am expecting great things in the coming episodes.

Watching the 1997 anime and then reading the manga is the superior order

the manga has useless spoilers. Miura himself said that starting with the black swordsman arc in the manga was questionable.

I love it. Griffith's philosophies and narcissistic attitude intrigues me to know more about him and his backstory and upbringing.

Beauty.

I thought Guts was a badass, but after his backstory was revealed I only have to commend the guy for how amazing he is.

Griffith is such a badass, man...

Born from a corpse, rather frightening. Guts' past has been revealed, not sure if entirely, probably not. Guts & Griffith sure are getting cosy with each other. Interesting beliefs Griffith holds. A 3 year timeskip happened, now it's closer to the actual timeline of the first episode.

I am very curious about the tree with hanged people that appears in the opening track, and it was insinuated that Guts' mother was perhaps a victim of that incident?

Guts' childhood story was tragic, you now understand why he's the way he is, and is not exactly comfortable with closeness or affection displayed for him. People can change maddeningly, and that is what was represented through Gambino.

I am really enjoying the overall narration, the direction, the pacing, the animation, the music, the philosophies(?) and even the characters.. I am enjoying Griffith and have some questions..

This episode in particular is the definition of "read the manga".
As someone who already did that years ago, it's still pleasant to hear characters talking, I like Hirasawa's music and the overall art quality, but narration, pace, directing, it's all over the place.

A lot of backstory to process in this episode. I like it.

Flashback: Guts was raised by Gambino, a gangleader. After sustaining crippling injuries, Gambino tries to kill Guts. He blames him for killing his (adoptive?) mother, "just like he did his father". Guts manages to kill him and gets chased out of the camp. Then he gets shot, falls down a cliff and ends up fighting a pack of white wolves while being half-dead.

Then we return to the present, after a 3 year time-skip. The Band of the Hawk steadily increased power and the episode ends in the middle of a battle between a black-armoured army and Guts & co.

I'm guessing Corkus gave up his schemes of killing Guts in his sleep. Or could he still be holding a grudge?

Edit: Oh yes, almost forgot: The episode started with a naked bucket-fight & Griffith showed Guts his PP. But more importantly, he showed him a weird red thing that's alive, which he got from a fortune-teller. Don't remember what it was called, a Beleth or something like that.

Agreed, that's what I'm gonna do. I don't care how good the manga is, it doesn't have an anime intro-song and no Guts theme. Music really adds a lot of "feeling" to an anime in my opinion.

I'm guessing the Black Swordsman arc you are referring to is the first episode? Yeah, I was thinking about that as well: was that a "flash forward" and am I watching a giant flashback now until we get to that point?

Or did the anime just cut it out entirely? A bit confusing, but no big deal. I'll probably read the manga after finishing the series (and maybe movies?).
