I found the episode okay; the last one is still the best. Considering I don't like Shiro or Aina, I don't really give a crap about their ideals and that they lived. If Aina had killed her brother earlier (or not brought him along), she could of possibly avoided the death of that ship. Oops.

The animation was top-notch this episode and easily the best thing of this entire show.

Good end. Even though this whole mess could've all been avoided if Aina had left her bro out of the Apsalus... ah, nevermind.
Dunno what episode 12 is supposed to be, considering that one gave a perfect closure to show. Let's see.

The ending was a bit abrupt yes but I would still say this is one of the most incredible finales and endings to one of the best shows iv seen in a while. The characters were all very real feeling with a ton of depth and even development to almost all of them. While its first half was a tad bit slow and sometimes dull, it's 2nd half had a near perfect pacing that was constantly thrilling and captivating displaying great execution of its themes, hell in many regards i think this series topped the original gundam's theme of humanity in both sides of a war.

Admittedly there are some flaws with this series, I do think the transition between episodes felt very jarring and many times i felt like i missed a episode before it or missed an extra scene after the credits that never were actually there. The transition between scenes sometimes shared this problem but no where near as bad, it did have a slow start as stated before but that is made up by the incredible 2nd half

This definitely ranks up there as one of the best gundams, 9/10

The ending was definitely good and different, but in the end I find this series underwhelming. One of its flaw is that the beginning was slow. Also, although i thought they did a decent job with the characterization and their ideals of Shiro, Aina and her brother, I just didnt care about the characters, I wanted to care but their ideal just pissed me off sometimes. In spite of that, I think the series did a very good job on showing the war, the armys, and gundams in a smaller scale (at least compared to the original gundam 79 which is the only one i've watched so far).Overall a 6.5/10

Oops, just noticed theres another ep.

Break a leg! Guess it did. This episode is marvellous, so to speak. I am really glad it didn't en up being some sort of pacifistic bullcrap in the midst of a bloodthirsty war, and even though slightly unrealistic, Shiro and Aina survived in the final push-turns-to-shove duel with her brother. In the end, Shiro's still the immature boy who'd rather forget about his past to elope with a woman. Talking about real irresponsibility. Well, another episode to pack up on things for real. I wonder what is in store for us viewers. 5/5

Amazing episode, but kinda hard to believe both Shiro and Aina survived.

First she got shot point blank, okay her pocket watched saved her, yet she was fried by the beam which is not a normal flame thrower and it would have cooked her body and would have died from the extreme heat. Shiro get's blasted by a beam point blank as well as falling with the debris with Ginias. It explodes, but miraculously survives :O

I'm not really surprised why Aina wanted his brother dead. His sanity died a long time ago, and only thing that keeps him alive is that damn Apsalus.

The Federation commander also dies as well due to impact of the beam.

Damn i don't want to see Shiro in handicapped :(

Looks like there's one more episode.
Karen seems to have regret her decision to turn her gun onto him. I do hope they see Shiro in the end.

4/5

The series was good thanks to its settings, various environments, the battles and it looked very good. The MS drawings were all shining but the character-design of the main characters felt... not right for the style of the show (I love the chara-design of Cowboy Bebop though). The first episodes were interesting mission-wise but the characters focus never got me, like I said before I never cared about them (maybe because of 0079?). And Kiki was uselessly annoying except right before she vanished. I had no particular expectation when I started it after The Origin because its chronology pointed out its side-story nature and the lack of scale was both a good and a bad point (bad, because when the story is not grand enough, you should try harder to make something compelling of your characters)
6-6.5/10

Now, I have some hopes about the extra episode since the preview mentionned the Flanagan Institute (sadly only briefly mentioned in MSG)

Who the hell shoots their own sister! For a moment there I really thought they'd kill of Aina at the last moment just like in the original series! But damn what an episode I'm actually glad Aina isn't death!

Really intense episode in general and a perfect ending for this series but well let's see what happens in the last episode!

Eleventh episode, and last of series, althought have a special, the 12th.

This episode was a very dramatic, more action but importants deaths, because the war is the war, anyone win, all are losers.

The best of episode, are the last 15 seconds, where we can intuit two knows shadows!!!

Why does the Gundam franchise have so many unlikeable characters? Do the writers believe soldiers who can't kill to protect others should be idealised?

Good ending overall, but not without its deus ex machinas, I guess. It would've been really better to let either Aina die from that gunshot, or from the beam at least. That survival was just ridiculous, do you really just jump away of a huge heat beam point blank and survive? Ugh. And even the third time the writers decided to give the main characters plot armor. Jeez, I get why one might want to keep the mains alive, but there're times when killing of a character or two is both more logical and impactful, it's just the case here. It was a bit softened by the fact that Shiro was de-facto dead for his team (they never met again), but eh. Him and Aina dying would've been better. Oh, and I guess Aina could've died four times actually, I don't think that falling from that ridiculous height on a piece of metal (I presume Gundam's hand is metal) comes without consequences. At least she should've been injured.

And given how this is the final episode, I'm really disappointed that Kiki was just dropped. She slowly gained my affection throught the show and was good in her final episode, I kinda wanted to see her again. Also sad that Karen never got her spotlight episode. Literally every single member of the team got one, yet the best girl Karen didn't. She was way better than both Michel and Sanders yet got overlooked in the end. She even dropped a line about Shiro being the worst soldier she's ever met, implying some backstory about her traumatic experiences dealing with soldiers, losing her husband due to some accident...But nope she doesn't deserve anything.

All in all, I enjoyed the episode, but I could've enjoyed it a lot more if right decisions were made (at least to my taste).

P.S. What about Aina's revenge for Norris? Was there any point at all in showing her that angry in ep.10? Nothing came out of it.

P.P.S. At least we got to see that the Federation is just as abhorrent as Zeon in terms of the higher-ups, with captain Ryer sending the 07th MS team to their death, execution orders etc. It's an obvious truth in reality, but I'm at least glad that we got to see that in Gundam too. No good sides in war.

If this is supposed to be one of the best Gundam series then thankfully I don't have to waste my time with all the other 50 episode long series. Not that it's a bad show by "objective" standards but it wasn't anything impressive for me.

I'm not going to talk about the characters, plot, style, charm, and setting because I don't think there's much talk about but what I'm interested in is the question of what makes an anti-war message compelling? Because after watching Turn A Gundam, Macross Zero, and this, I find that none of these anti-war sentiments landed with me. And I don't think that's just because I'm not personally exposed to war or didn't grow up in a postwar era, because I thought Gasaraki and other series were very well done in terms of anti-war message.

I can list out some partial reasons:
-The message isn't executed with any particular flair. It's always done in a very formulaic way (some loose canon or accident becomes the catalyst for the escalation of violence between two sides)
-I find it hard to be hooked into the inner struggles of the protagonists caught in the middle of these wars, so there's basically no emotional anchor for me in the war so I don't really care (though this isn't always necessary)
-A lot of the anti-war message is predicated on emotion, way too much. There's always an angry mob quick to anger and thirsty for revenge. I mean, yeah I guess we can talk about Japanese internment, the Red Scare, and how Germans had to change their last names during WWII, so emotion is a large driving force... but I don't know... maybe it's because I've seen this done so many times on screen I'm numb to it.
-The warmongers are cartoonish- whether it's going too far in the name of science, going too far in the name of pride, or going too far in the name of ambition, these guys are just made out to be despicably heartless.
-Perhaps it's not really these tropes themselves and how cliche they are but rather how they're executed--- maybe if the show spent more time with people while they build up resentment, or with the warmongers to see how they got to be so heartless, the anti-war argument wouldn't appear so simplistic and preachy as "make love not hate". You wanna do someone who's too ambitious? Make someone like Goda from SAC. On the whole he's just the same type of antagonist but his ideology is rendered in much greater detail.
-So is it the complexity and care with with the anti-war message is delivered? Because one of the things that Gasaraki does really well compared to other anti-war shows is that it fully shows the political complexities of war and doesn't boil it down to mob mentality emotions. Same thing with Ghost in the Shell SAC 2nd Gig; I felt like its anti-war stuff had sufficient political complexity to allow it to play a soft ballad song at the end when all the soldiers are calling off the nuke.
-But Shiki was all about mob mentality. What distinguishes Shiki? Well, Shiki took its time building up to the eruption of emotion from the mob.
-So basically the way that the anti-war messages are executed in this and similar series doesn't have much illustrative power because it lacks political/emotional complexity, and it doesn't have much emotional resonance because they seem to focus on the war before the characters and the characters (both the well meaning protagonists and the overly ambitious antagonists) have never been able to evoke a sense of pathos like Ryu Soma from Argento Soma did.

Lol it's funny how this series says the war is over after Aina pulls her "make love not war" schtick as if that's what ended the war.

Everything I heard about this anime was a lie.
Vietnam inspired my ass.
The horrors of war my ass.
Real portrayal of soldiers my ass.

The first half of the series was a light-hearted guerrilla action in the jungle
And the second half is a cringey romance

Exactly as the big brother said, this is a fucking war goddammit!
Thousands die every day on both sides!
What distinguishes these two people from the others?
Why should I care about the stupid romance between these two Insignificant soldiers?
Meh so far this is the most overrated Gundam.

I dont know what to think of this. Would have been amazing if it was a proper double cour, or atleast full 12 eps. First half felt like weekly "we need to fill the episodes with something" while the second was rushed as if it was a OVA/special to an already existing story. The entire Kiki plot just sort of ended and after that the story turned a bit less childish but also more preachy.
It certainly is different enough from most other Gundam shows to stand out.

Atleast I think among the pacifist MC characters Shiro and Aina stand out because they still do whats necessary and dont rely on some plot convenience, power of love, "newtype" mind crush.
And some Federation officers were scum which is good for the UC overall.

Yet another idiotic pacifist in Gundam... Aina was a non-character to begin with and still all her character development came down to being a preaching pacifist bitch with brain damage. She might be even worse than Banagher. For shame.
A character shot through the heart at close range miraculously lives...because the bullet landed on the locket on her chest. Give me a break. How many times do I have to see this idiocy in fiction?

I hoped to give the episode 5/5 up until the eyecatch, but in the end it's 2/5 from me.

Well, I enjoyed this series (except the episode when Eledore and Michel got captured by Zeons, that was idiotic). The fights were mostly interesting (Norris what a badass) and they actually put some thought into showing battle tactics, using their surroundings, things like that. Seems like fights on Earth in Gundam are in general better than in space. In space they're just flying around and there's little sense of distance.

The characters were likeable. It was actually interesting to see Shiro's idealism crash against the reality (especially ep 8). The romance with Aina was also enjoyable, as both sides of it were developed and she actually has a good personality. So I was cheering them on.

This episode was good too, both sides are terrible and commit war crimes. Shiro and Aina are right to get out of there. Federation sniper was the MVP lol. At least the good characters survived for once.

Everything I heard about this anime was a lie.

I stan Ghinius because I legit think he's the best character in 08th. He is relatable and as a fellow BPD bitch I find him the most sympathetic, definitely more than Shiro and Aina lol

Though I feel like if Shiro and Aina were honestly portrayed as dumb, horny, impulsive 20-somethings who were shitty to ditch their comrades in the middle of battle ala Reccoa and suffer consequences accordingly, they'd be fine as characters. 08th would've been a much darker series, but ultimately I think it would've been a better one because as it is most of the writing in the 2nd half, especially w/Shiro and Aina, breaks down if you think about it for more than 5 seconds.

Unfortunately due to the massive production issues the series had, I think writing problems were probably inevitable.

6,5/10 it was the good kind of alright. Still disappointing how half-assed and rushed it was on top. I thought I wouldn't mind since I prepared myself, but the lack of satisfaction is noticeable :S Welp, at least it was enjoyable and I warmed up to Shiro x Aina. Thankfully they survived.

It's too bad that the production of this OVA was so complicated. There are definite hints of a good show, especially in the second half, but the guy who took over for the original creator just wasn't able to tie it all together in time for the finale. Like, the Aina + Shiro romance is the obvious story thread to pick up on, but there wasn't enough episodes left to make their relationship not feel rushed. I appreciate the unique, Vietnam-inspired look into the Gundam universe, but the characters were unremarkable and the storylines were basic.
