At Otakon session on July 19th, anime director Yamamoto Yutaka (the series organizer of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" and the director of "Kannagi") answered questions regarding "Endless Eight" arc of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2.

Former Kyo-Ani Director Yamamoto puts the Haruhi Season 2 Endless Eight Arc in his own words (Youtube)

He said he knew the repetitive direction of the arc more than one year ago and he was against the idea. He apologized to the fans on behalf of the Haruhi production committee because he left Kyoto Animation on his own will.

Yamamoto apologized in his blog that his remark at Otakon "on behalf of SOS-dan production committee" was misleading and corrected the expression into "as a former member of SOS-dan".

Note: "SOS-dan" here is the name of the production committee of Haruhi 1.

Updated 2
Kyoto Animation replied to J-Cast's question that Yamamoto Yutaka has nothing to do with the company at all.

I'm sure for the biggest fans even a hundred apologies directly from the Haruhi production committee wouldn't be enough. I seriously can't even begin to imagine what the hell were they thinking if they already had the idea over a year ago.

I am not sure how to react..

The guy left KyoAni to work on a fujoshi anime.. For some reason, I have a bad feeling about it. And considering that he is no longer a member of the Haruhi 2 staff, he really don't have much right to apologize on their behalf as that it has nothing to do with him in the first place.

More over, I think the Endless Eight Arc is pretty well-executed, even though I am not too happy to watch a different variation of the same episode over and over again. Nonetheless, I get the feeling that this second season will turn out pretty good by the end of the series, of course. In other words, I think KyoAni do not need to apologize as that they are doing a good job. If people don't like the Endless Eight, they can always choose not to watch it as that there is always a sufficient number of anime series and ova per season. Nonetheless, I am looking forward to KyoAni's dynamic presentation of the second series as that I still have high expectations.^^

I guess the "apology" is part of his revenge on KyoAni.

No offence man, but someone already made a thread on this in the Haruhi S2 subforum.

He can apologise as he left KyoAni of his own choice at the time this was being thought about. He could have stopped this but instead chose to leave KyoAni. That is why he is apologising. (The other thread has a transcript of the panel).

Posts in news discussion are always prioritized.

I dislike what they've decided to do with Endless Eight but it's still not that big of a deal. I waited a long time for the second season so waiting a little longer for this stuff to end is nothing. So now I'm simply browsing through the episode once a week, seeing what loop they're on or what new mask Yuki has picked.

The apology's nice, but it shouldn't have ever been necessary. They shouldn't have ever let this happen. To think that they even considered pulling this on fans is practically proof that they enjoy trolling people.

I realise this, I was just pointing out that someone in the news team (ie. higher up members of the forums) had made a thread about the same topic as another thread (something normal, lower members are told not to do).

So I was pointing this out so that he could rectify it, either by deleting or merging that thread.

Also, what happened to the other guy's post that quoted me?

KyoAni subscribes to the same marketing principles as Seth MacFarlane. They can insult you, troll you, and make you threaten to stop watching, but they already know you'll be back next week to have more swill shoveled down your throat.

While I do admit that I will continue to watch it, I'm seriously considering just waiting until it's confirmed that endless eight's actually over and then just watching that episode and continuing on from there. It's like a slap to the face of all haruhi fans that they're stretching out what could've/should've been done in like two episode in who knows how many >_>. The reason I'm going to keep watching, to a degree, the second season is that I've read the novels and know what's to come... that is if endless eight ever ends.

I can't believe he actually said sorry for all that. I mean, that was nice and all, but they shouldn't have done it in the first place. Two or even three episodes of that would have been enough, but they had to push it to five, pissing off tons of people. We're not just gonna go "Oh, don't worry. That's okay. We'll still watch the show no problem!" 'Cause they're just gonna keep doing it until they reach the eighth repeat or something :/ I guess it wouldn't really be called 'Endless Eight' if we didn't expect to have 8 episodes of the same constant shit, but what's done is done, and it's still trolling.

It's probably going to be 6 episodes; Endless Eight is a reference to the symbol for infinity and/or the month of August, month number 8. The title is in the novel and it's not a reference to 8 episodes in any way.

That doesn't change the fact Endless Eight is 3-4 episodes too long.

In the transcript in the other thread on this he says there was to be 6 eps of Endless Eight. One of the audience asked him why they chose to do 6 eps of EE and he answered the question without hesitation or saying that it wasn't six episodes.

in the context of the anime itself, they can repeat it as many times as they want. the staff are not idiots, the know what ticks people off. even after a year, if they decided to go with it, an apology isn't necessary(from anyone). all they can do is simply watch the fall out if any and move on. all these people who are outraged will probably watch the next repetition anyways.

What might happen is that they are goin to buy volume 1 for episode 1. Than just ingore vol. 2 and 3 and possibly 4 unless the last episode in volume 4 would be worth while. So their best bet would not to produce volumes two and three for dvd.

I can just smell the mockery. "I'm sorry for leaving the company before I could do anything to stop this." Way to stick it to the trolls!

In any case, at least this garbage will be done soon and we can move on to some actual plot (maybe). This arc should have been three episodes. Any more is too much, as we see now. Any fewer is to few, as the time loop would lose its effect. First episode: intro, second episode: introduce time warp, third episode: end time warp. Done. All you need are 2, 3 (or maybe 4 instead), and 7.

The Earth King has invited you to Lake Laogai. You will be honored to accept his invitation.

It's a very delicate move by the Haruhi team but funny... I don't hate the idea at all.
The endless eight arc only emphasizes Haruhi's capabilities and I'm sure that it will bring an interesting development. It's only annoying now because you're watching the repeated episodes every week but if you try to watch it in consecutive ways, I think that somehow you'll enjoy it like I do. Besides, it really helps to let the feeling of 'endlessness' reach the audience *laughs* and because of that, I really feel sorry for Nagato. XD

edit:
