| Why most anime characters who smokes make them look cool or badass? I mean, just search in google images with "Anime smoke" you'll get the idea. |

Fire is pretty and interesting and cool, smoke itself is pretty and interesting and cool. Lighting a cigarette or a lit cigarette adds another light source, and a dynamic one at that. Smoke moving ever so elegant and etherically (vocabulary?) can add not only to a scene's look, but also its dynamic. When you show a character or two, but like in a still, no movement, a moment of thought. But the smoke from the cigarette creates -> moves -> vanishes - this makes us notice how time actively passes, with maybe nothing else happening this adds to "dramatic pause". (or un-dramatic pause, depends on situation) |

| Honestly I find characters who smoke in anime to be pretty badass most of the time. But that may be just because the characters were already badass without the smoking. |
Some characters know their shit really well It's not about coolness or badassery as much as it is about sophistication. Smoking is often brought to emphasize adulthood, independence, etc. in fiction, at least when it's pictured in a romanticized way. It can also add mystery to the character or be used as a seductive trait. All of this is directly inherited from classic noir. In the end, just another cliché, and like any cliché, its execution can go right or wrong depending on the show and the character. |
