Is the OVA a prequel that's only good for people who've watched the movie? Or is it actually required viewing to make sense of the film?

Is it just me or are the font colors used in your profile for comments not the standard default?

I pick at details if the work merits it. What's the word... context? My problem is when an author attempts to show a serious situation but lacks the knowledge or technique to recreate it. Think Code Gauss or any bad movie. It's camp, but not quite bad enough to be good.
I absolutely, absolutely agree with your take on Ghibli. I realize that even my favorites lack unity in terms of climax and conclusion. The bulk of events do not weave together. Coherence is near absent in recent Ghibli productions. They're preachy. Written by animators, not writers. I see that. I forgive it because I adore adore adore those cute, often human negligibilities (I turn to Japanese media almost exclusively for my cute "high"). That, and director Takahata's conclusions are among the most sensitive and poetic I've experienced. They are moments, not stories. At least that is how I feel. I hope I'm not rambling too much. I finally found an english subbed torrent for Kawamo wo Suberu Kaze, I think I'll watch it tomorrow. |

I enjoyed the earlier segments in S&W - the wandering, the banter, the carefree not-much-going-on pace of the show. I also liked Horo's intimidating character (finally, a lead that ain't a ditz!). I didn't care so much for the economics 101 nor the later conflicts which made for the bulk of the show. It didn't bother me or push my buttons, so to speak, but I felt the show exhausted itself early - turning into a shonen after some episodes rather than keeping to its contemplative pace.
I agree, for these kind of shows, characters are paramount. The difficulty is getting picky audiences - perhaps people such as us - to accept the characters. Tougher folks will point out that's not how a child acts/talks/behaves, not how a policeman speaks, or that X character serves no purpose but to push Y plot-point, et cetera, ad infinitum, seculo seculorum, and reject the show altogether. In the end, it simply comes down to the particular viewer and whether or not the story "clicks" - or doesn't. |

I have to agree with you on the character interaction, IIRC one of the characters mentioned not wanting the journey to end. The show established that sentiment well, and I simply loved some of the cuts to ED that exhibited the trio wandering to music. The one that most fans will remember is the very ending. (edit - above in reference to the Samurai Champloo series)
Come to think of it, there aren't very many works that bother to establish a sense of "togetherness". As always, thanks for the share. I'll definitely check out the short once I find it. |

Thanks again for the share. Good episode, especially the "don't think too hard about it" message at the end. I don't have any context to back this up on, but I think the writers were using the situation to push their characters adorably off-character, if that makes any sense. It showed for Rei-l at least.
I do the same thing, ffwding through shows old and new, making what I can of individual sections. MAL is a good tool for this purpose: pick a potential show, click Forum->See All Discussions, identify the episodes with the most replies, and try those first. Another simple method: google the show title followed by the line "favorite episode" - sometimes anime magazines will list top episodes by popularity. Going on a tangent, but If you enjoy brief, intense moments as I do, I'd also recommend picking up some acting scenebooks. They are meant as practice material for actors, but often contain exceptional scenes from plays and film, prefaced with an introductory paragraph for context. My favorite is "Great Scenes from the World Theater" by Steffensen. Let me throw an episode back at you. Try this episode of City Hunter (s1e7). I think you'll like it considering your interest in Samurai Champloo (which is excellent), Bebop, Lupin |

Oh ja... Dabei wird, wenn man ein Review schreiben will, sogar noch so ein Kasten voller Hinweise (u. a. auf die Synopsis angezeigt) -.-
Und danke :) |

Cute episode, thanks for the share. I agree I may have dropped it early. I found the animated series a bit bubbly, that's all. I did read the Usagi Drop manga, and though I didn't complete it, I read through the events in the anime and well past the timeskip.
Presentation (music, voice, timing, &c.) plays a big part for me. There are several series which I ended up dropping in favor of the manga - and ended up loving. I watch things on a scene-by-scene basis, and in that respect, found absolute gems of scenes within series I generally disliked. These I usually clip out with a video editor and stash in my "inspiration box". Just a armchair-hobbyist artist/writer doing her thing, haha. |

Yeah, it's a moving video. I think you'll love House of Small Cubes as well - it had me in tears the first time I watched it. A link to the LQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=442h9RXx120) and a link the the alluded scene in Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2bk_9T482g).
There is a nice archive of animation/art school projects at http://chanarchive.org/4chan/co/15747/animations-general I haven't dug through all of them yet, though. |

I'm not up-to-date yet, but yeah, it's not that good. In the beginning it had the Samurai Champloo kind of feeling, but that soon changed. The first episode was good though, but I'm not sure.. Well, exams are coming up soon, so I won't really have the time to finish it. And once summer holiday starts, I'm not sure if I'll ever finish it.

Didn't really like the way the main character acted. Has been a while since I watched the last episode, and didn't feel like starting it again. Didn't know whether I'd put it in on-hold or dropped. Especially since I'm planning on starting other animes (Like Lupin III), I just wanted to make some room.
You can give it a try, but to be honest, I really have no idea why it's so high in the top anime ranking. |

I'll put in my plan to watch list, so I'll definitely give it a try once I got more time. Thanks for letting me know. Is there really no main story at all, or just every now and then like Natsume?

Ohh, Nice find that looks perfect 3 year Warranty, usb 3.0, hdmi and
can support 32 gigs of memory. Wow can't thank you enough very informative and you even found me a system board, Thanks i hope i can count on you in the future for some more Tech questions? ^_^. |

CaptMalone | 05-06-12, 5:15 PM
Yeah the IvyBridge i've seen in a email, Yeah they look very good but a little
out of my price range. I was more aiming for the Intel Core i3-2120 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz to go along with ASUS P8B75-M/CSM LGA 1155 or BIOSTAR TZ77B LGA 1155, but i was thinking that i don't really need the usb 3.0 so i might get a cheaper board. |

CaptMalone | 05-06-12, 3:31 PM
Thanks, In your opinion should i prioritize the System board or the
CPU ? and yes I'm aiming for a Intel i3 Processor. |

I'm not really concern all that much on gaming, mostly watching
anime and videos in 1080p. |

Apollon was really nice and refreshing, and there are some other animes like
Sankarea that are quiet interesting to be honest. Previous season didn't really have these good ones. I didn't watch Lupin the third because I didn't watch the other related animes. I figured it was kinda like a second season or so. I already have quiet some animes in my watching list, so I'm not going to pick it up just yet. If it's still worth it at episode 6, let me know and I'll watch it. |

I'd agree that mere downloading for private use doesn't seem illegal, unless there's some creativity in interpretation in a test case. I'd qualify that with P2P file sharing, though, because you upload as well as download the copyrighted material.
I imagine there are partial harmonisation in the western hemisphere, at least. I don't think that would change the fact that more-total harmonisation would be more preferable to those interested parties. Heck, I can see the benefits in clarity for us, the consumer, in such laws. Re: the problem of the internet, you should quickly scan the Digital Economy Act 2010 to see how the responsibility has been shifted to the ISPs to deal with, and that the internet isn't truly anonymous. I can appreciate the argument that mere consumption of unlicensed media should be considered infringement, especially in cases where such media is easily obtainable at a reasonable price where you live. I try to purchase such media when it is as such. Obviously I'd disagree with it's actual enforcement, mind you, because a) I have benefited from it, (even from watching simple YT videos) b) It's more efficient and easier to go after the providers. More difficult is where it is not possible to access such media where you live (i.e. anime). I cannot see any justification for criminalisation of that. |
