I watched a couple episodes of the original series from the 70s some years ago, quite silly, episodic, simple series, I remember having fun with it. There's this Russian translation group that would do things like that, I can't remember the name of them, I think they had different names actually, but one of its members lurks around in this club every now and then.I also remember seeing some 80s or 90s ovas translated around but memory might be tricking me on that one. And yeah, if something is famous in Japan it doesn't mean it translates outsides and vice-versa, cultural differences are shown through preferences I guess. Just think of long running series like Sazae-san, Anpanman, and chibi Maruko-chan for example which are never going to see the same level of interest ouside of Japan. Of course in these particular cases the sheer amount of episodes might scare potential buyers or fansubs. But there are smaller shows relatively unknown outside of Nippon too. As some long time followers of fansubed anime in this group can confirm, several shows became popular in the west after being fansubbed first and then from the interest generated from that, ended having a proper physical release or even a TV showing. I remember a time when Legend of Galactic Heroes was totally unknown and these days you even have the books translated in English. Not to say time bokan will ever reach the universal acclaim of logh, but someone might pick it up one day to complete the anime palete in English language territory as we have seen with way more obscure titles. |

Have any of you ever seen the "Time Bokan" franchise? It seems like it's a huge retro anime franchise that was never fansubbed or dubbed but is still getting new adaptations in the 2010s. It's crazy to me that the franchise seems to be huge in japan but pratically unheard of in the West. |
