Ah, okay. That's actually a nickname I have on another forum so I was curious as to whether or not I had used it here yet or not. I didn't think I had, I'm pretty sure the name is taken already.
Heh, you don't have to worry about "going easy" in your responses. I'm not the type to be offended or... "butthurt" about someone disagreeing with me and pointing out how I could be/am wrong.
I suppose stop animation is pretty much the same as using cells and the like. I've just never viewed any kind of stop motion as animation... it's always seemed like it is it's own distinct category. Perhaps it's the real objects being used that causes the confusion as to what it ultimately is.
I think the place is already becoming a catch all for Japanese media, and it really does speak to our userbase/admins/mods. You can read the responses mods gave to the thread I made a while back about the English authors and novels. Uhg.
I've used Edgey for a username before? I should probably stick to one name.
Anime is a Japanese slang term for animation. Stop motion is no different a method of animation. It's a process that gives the viewer the illusion of having still images come into motion. They're simply pieces of works that were made for Japanese in mind.
I do agree with Edgey that the inclusion of novels and even OEL/Ameri-manga/*insert fancy term for manga-inspired works here* do not hold any weight for their presence on this site. Specifically, just because they happen to be the inspiration for their respective adaptations/medium does not mean they having anything to do with Japanese animation or graphic novels. Both mediums are different and are distinct in their expression of ideas.
If this site ever becomes an ideal place for listing every single type of Japanese media, it is the result of a very immature userbase and an inability to make a clear distinction between different forms. Having an affinity for Japanese (pop) culture and animation/comics (and video games) are not mutually exculsive.
A discussion would have been more appropriate before adding the support for the Save our SMA... cause. However, since I've not been around for this club much, I'll leave that decision in Insania's hand. He's been more of a caretaker for the club than I have really.
I certainly enjoy various forms of entertainment and the more obscure, thoughtful, and different they are the more I want to see them. This site, however, is for anime and manga. Stop Motion Animation isn't anime. So, pretty much, it just simply does not belong on the site. If things like this are to be allowed it'll only be a matter of time until live action dramas are on here as well. To me, it's no different than the addition of the author's of novels whose work inspired anime or the novels that are simply written in Japan. While they are from Japan, and everyone seems to love everything from Japan, I don't think it has a place on the site.
This site, with the addition of SAM and the above mentioned entries, is becoming more of a general listing site for Japanese media and not a site for discussing/cataloging anime and manga. It's just a shame that it's becoming something more of a catch all for Japan and not what it was originally for.
Hopefully that made sense... and hopefully there weren't too many errors. Operating off of little sleep tends to do that to my writing.
