Save the Anime Industry

Information
We all like anime. If you don't then you probably shouldn't be on this board. Anime is growing, and becoming more and more popular. So why is the anime industry in a state of financial crisis. Simple answer, everyone is downloading, and nobody is buying.

American anime company, Geneon, went bankrupt earlier this year. Only a small percentage of people buy anime in Japan, that's the reason america is seeing so many shows come to the US.

Illegal downloading really does have the potential to kill the industry as we know it...spread the word, raise awareness.

Some more titles, one of which I wanted to check out (Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt).

This club needs more members, seriously.

The way I see it, if you're not going to bother to attempt knowing a bit of the culture behind the show, you might as well wait for the Americanized English dub version of it. In the first place, the show was aimed at a Japanese audience.

As for those people you mentioned, that bothers me too, depending on what subject you're speaking on. I've seen more than enough times when people claim the characters should be swearing, when swearing doesn't even exist in the original language. If it's edited to death like something 4kids puts out though, I'd technically be on their side.

People watching anime shouldn't be "expected" to know Japanese.
Chinese, Korean and Indian languages also use honorifics and "special meaning" words, yet translations and subtitles for those languages work around them. I'm really tired of people who're saying "THE OFFICIAL VERSION GOT IT WRONG!!1" just because they're assuming what they watched first is correct.

@Thorn_Pilgrim: I'm honestly kind of tired of how people accuse fansubs of being poor. There are good and bad translations out there, just like how the western market has. As someone who actually knows a bit Japanese, I get annoyed by certain official subtitles too. Much of CrunchyRolls for example, seeing that I hate scripts straying too far from the original via text. I'm fine with dubs doing it, but I like my subtitles as close to the original as possible.

What you said about alienating people who aren't familiar... I think as long as you get the basics, it should be simple enough. Just remember basic honorifics and all should be fine. A quick Google search can get you any references you don't understand.

Anyone kinda annoyed that this website posts fansub groups on anime pages? I mean, Fullmetal Alchemist and Azumanga Daioh have them, and those series have been out for years (and in most languages/countries)!

There's this fantastic fansub documentary on Youtube. Should I post it in the forum? It's not so much critical about what fansubs do to the industry, but more critical about their presentation of anime (i.e. unprofessional, somewhat egotistical, alienates people who aren't familiar with anime or Japanese language). It does feature clips from anime and fansubs, but I consider it fair use.

The schedule to the convention I attend yearly. As you can see, most of the stuff has yet to be licensed. Hell, they just added Eva 2.22 for a few screenings off of that, since the rips came out and got fansubbed this week. I'll be attempting to catch that as my third watch of the film. And note that I still do plan on getting the R1.

I've never heard of a convention screening fansubs, but if that's the case then, yes, that itself is quite problematic.
