Seemingly a simple, 17-year-old student at the Ashford Academy, Lelouch Lamperouge, also called Lulu by his friends, is in fact the son of the Emperor of Britannia and the late Empress Marianne and a member of the Britannia Imperial Family. His real name is Lelouch Vi Britannia, before his mother was gunned down and his sister crippled in the same attack. He confronted the Emperor afterwards, blaming him for leaving his mother defenseless. In response, his father declared him stripped of his status as prince and banished him to Japan, where he was used as a political hostage over the Sakuradite. It was during his stay at the prime minister's house that he befriended Suzaku Kururugi. However, when the Holy Empire finally developed its Knightmare Frames fleet and decided to invade Japan to seize control of the Sakuradite mines - consequently discarding Lelouch's use as a diplomatic tool - the young boy and his sister faked their deaths and reverted to their mother's maiden name, Lamperouge. Ever since then Lelouch has endeavored to help those who are defenseless and struggling against people gifted with power. Fearing for his and his sister's safety, he hid his true identity and sought the Ashford family's support. Only the Ashford family head and Suzaku Kururugi, Lelouch's childhood friend, seem to know his true name.

After receiving the power of the Geass by C.C., Lelouch finally begins his vendetta against Britannia by making use of his newly acquired power and his genius-level intellect while hiding his true self and intentions under the mask of Zero. Due to his charisma and power, he soon manages to gather the remaining Japanese resistance fighters under him to form the Order of the Black Knights and effectively battle the Britannian forces.
