Melodic Death Metal

The Melodic Death Metal sound was formed in the early 90's. This genre is also known as Gothenburg Metal, named after the city of Göteborg. It contains more melodic riffs, acoustic guitars, and higher pitched growls than the Death Metal genre. In addition, the lyrics of Melodic Death Metal differ from that of Death Metal. Melodic Death Metal themes can range from astrology to fantasy, whereas Death Metal themes generally relate to death, murder, and rape.

Melodic Death Metal has been popular in Northern Europe for a long time. The genre gained a popularity boost in the early 2000's, and spread throughout the world to places such as North America and Japan. Three bands considered to be pioneers of the sound are At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, and In Flames.
