The Varia is the Vongola Family's elite, independent assassination team. They are composed of genius assassins who work in the deepest recesses of the Mafia. Each member takes on missions that are said to be impossible to accomplish by humans, however, they do not accept a mission unless they believe there is a 90% chance of success. Those that see them work often say that their high level assassination skills are demonic. Despite lacking loyalty and respect for other members, they are extremely loyal to their leader, Xanxus. The Varia also appear to have more than fifty subordinates ranged under the command of the main members. The Varia is apparently reclusive, only showing themselves after Iemitsu Sawada disappeared.
During the alternate future arc, a 32 member Varia squad led by Xanxus attack a Millefiore base in Italy in accordance with the Vongola's plan to eliminate the Millefiore. Despite their fierce loyalty to the Vongola Family, the Varia only consider themselves as the Vongola IX's assassination team, still not acknowledging Tsuna to be the rightful Vongola X
Leader of the Varia and Vongola IX's apparent son. He is both respected and feared by his subordinates. In order to retrieve the Vongola rings, he went to Japan, to kill Tsuna and his 'family'.
Being the leader of the Varia, Xanxus is extremely powerful. In addition to his superior physical and mental strength that exceed those of most regular humans, Xanxus also possesses a destructive Dying Will Flame called the "Flame of Wrath", which was originally used by Vongola II. Xanxus also has two guns, utilizing a technique originally developed by Vongola VII, that combines his flame with Dying Will Bullets. As a result, Xanxus is an incredibily formidable foe.
According to Squalo, despite not being born into the Vongola Family, a young Xanxus was already able to use the Dying Will Flame and had an intuition that rivaled that of one who did possess the bloodline. His mother, who was an ordinary citizen in Italy, went delusional when she saw his flames, believing that he was the IX's child. Xanxus was taken in by the IX, and loved him as if he really was the IX's real son. He became spoiled and grew to have a terrible temper. When Xanxus found out that he was not the IX's son, and that someone without the Vongola bloodline cannot become the next boss, he started hating the IX and began to plot his downfall. After realizing that the IX was going to appoint Tsuna as the next boss, he went berserk. Later, in the coup d'etat known as the "Cradle Affair", Xanxus is defeated by the IX, receives his trademark burns, and frozen in ice for many years.
After he awakens, he kidnaps the IX, places him within Gola Mosca's armor, and uses the Ring Tournament as an excuse to kill off Tsuna's guardians and take control of Vongola. When Tsuna destroys Gola Mosca, he blames him for killing the IX, and pretends to avenge him. Though Tsuna defeats Xanxus in battle, Bel and Mammon try to initiate a Plan B by collecting the rings and reviving Xanxus to give him the ultimate power of the Vongola, however, the ring rejects him since he does not have Vongola blood, stopping his ambition once and for all.
According to Lussuria his birthday is October 10.
Xanxus appears to represent the sin of wrath.
Superbi Squalo (スペルビ スクアーロ)
Superbi Squalo is a swordsman extremely loyal to Xanxus. As a student, he was a gifted swordsman and was able to read forms easily while perfecting his own style. Squalo was actually the next candidate for Varia leadership, after defeating its leader Tyr. He later reveals that he submitted to Xanxus due to his "fury" and ambition, pledging to make Xanxus the next head of the Vongola Family. During the Vongola Tournament, he becomes the holder of the Ring of Rain, and battles Yamamoto for the right to hold the Ring of Rain. Squalo appeared to be eaten by a shark after losing the battle, however, Dino had apparently rescued him in order to get Squalo to reveal information on Xanxus. In the future, Squalo appears in an encoded video for Tsuna and his family, warning them not to move from their current location and that instructions will be arriving shortly. Later Squalo is shown to have continuously fought 100 battles in order to secure his title as the 'Second Sword Emperor'. It was discovered that Squalo actually fought 101 battles, since he did not count the fight with Genkishi. Squalo had sent the adult Yamamoto as a way to draw him back to the sword.
He is supposed to represent the sin of Pride since his name, Superbi, comes from "superbia", Latin term for pride
Resident genius prince of the Varia. Holder of the Ring of Storm, fought Gokudera for it. Nicknamed "Prince the Ripper" because he murdered his twin brother and becomes euphoric when he sees his own blood.
He is supposed to represent the sin of Sloth since in Christian tradition, Belphegor is said to be the chief demon of this deadly sin
Holder of the Indigo Pacifier.
A member of the elite assassination team, the Varia. He has half of the Ring of Mist, thus battling Chrome in the gym of Namimori High. Though he almost defeats Chrome, the tables turns against him once Mukuro takes possession of Chrome's body. As a result, Marmon is defeated by Mukuro and loses the right to the Ring of Mist to Chrome. In the Future arc, he is said to be dead.
Before his battle, Reborn and Colonello have doubts of whether he is a Arcobaleno. He then reveals his sealed Pacifier, and claims that unlike his colleagues, he has been trying to break the curse. Due to extensive research, he created a chain that is able to conceal the power of the Arcobaleno pacifiers, as well as the Vongola Rings.
He has the special power to find a person's location by sneezing into a piece of paper (he carries a roll of paper with him); the spit or mucus that sticks to the paper shows a map leading to the desired person. He, like Mukuro, can create illusions.
His real name is Viper, and he has a black frog named Phantasma that lies on top of his head.
He represents the sin of Greed. Mammon is the false god of riches and avarice in Biblical literature.
Levi is the captain of the attack team that was sent by Xanxus to retrieve the Vongola Rings. It is said that his speed in accomplishing his work is the best in the Varia. He is also extremely loyal to Xanxus. He carries eight parabolas on his back, which are each capable of discharging electricity. His only named attack, "Levi Volta", suspends all eight parabolas around a target and simultaneously discharges.
He was chosen as the holder of the Ring of Thunder and thus battled Lambo: though Levi had no problem defeating the 5 and 15-year-old Lambos, he was outmatched by the 25-year-old Lambo. Even so, Lambo eventually reverted back to his 5-year-old self before being able to finish him off. As Levi prepared to deliver the final blow to the unconscious Lambo, Tsuna saves him in the last second. However, since Tsuna intervened, Levi won the right to Ring of Thunder, along with Xanxus winning the right to the Ring of the Sky.
Levi represents the sin of envy. 'Leviathan' is the demon of envy in Goetic scripture.
Lussuria is a flamboyant martial arts master whose favored style is Muay Thai. His knee is covered with a steel plate, making it ideal for defense, as well as deadly when used for offense. During the Vongola Tournament, he battles Ryohei in a brightly lit boxing ring, and initially has the advantage as he habitually wears sunglasses. After Ryohei destroys the lights and shatters his knee, the rest of the Varia assume his loss, and Gola Moska shoots him in the back, making him unable to continue the fight. Lussuria reappears during the tournament's final battle and is saved by Ryohei. In the future, he can unleash a sun-based peacock that can heal wounds, though it also consequently accelerates a person's hair and nail growth. He was born on April 4.
He represents the sin of Lust. His name, Lussuria, is Italian for lust.
First appear in Katekyo Hitman Reborn! chapter 219.
The newest officer member of the Varia in the future who uses a Hell Ring with the numbers "666" imprinted on it. Introduced during the Varia attack on a Millefiore base in Italy, Fran is Mammon's replacement as the group's illusionist and is thus forced to wear a large frog hat to symbolize this. Fran has a calm demeanor despite being very antagonistic towards the other members of the Varia, verbally attacking them. He can be sarcastic, coldy abusive, and very, very blunt. Fran is portrayed as a level-headed coward, that prefers running than fighting. He occasionally forgets that he is the Varia's illusionist and is supposed to see through the illusions that enemies set up, making vague references to the fact that he has a master. He is often teamed up with Bel, whom he calls "senpai." Fran is actually quite talented in illusions, being able to make it seem like he and Bel died fighting Rasiel. There seems to be more to him than meets the eye with Fran, as when Bel threw and embedded knives in to his back, he did not even bleed, and instead started to take out the knives, bending and disposing them.
Gola Mosca (Italian for throat fly or maybe intended as Gluttony Fly) appears to be the first series of the Mosca weapons. Originally a weapon built by the Military, but was covered up until the Vongola began working on it themselves. The Military stopped developing the Mosca weapon because it required a human life force that could use a strong dying will flame for its own power. The Varia owned a prototype of the Gola Mosca series that had a deactivation button on its back, as well as an advanced model with no deactivation button. Once the advanced model began attacking, it was believed to be unstoppable. The newest model of the Gola Mosca was dressed as an official member of the Varia and was treated as the potential Cloud Guardian for Xanxus's Family. It was, however, quickly defeated by Hibari and lost its right to the ring. Unfortunately, Hibari failed to fully deactivate Gola Mosca, and it began to rampage, attacking anything its sensors picked up as alive. When Tsuna arrived, he was able to overpower the weapon and sliced it in half, revealing the restrained & bloody body of the 9th Vongola Boss. Xanxus used this situation to frame Tsuna, and become the 10th Boss with loyalty from the majority of the Vongola Famiglia. Gola Mosca, as a Varia member, represents the sin of Gluttony, because Beelzebub, the demon of gluttony, is called the "Lord of the Flies" and takes the form of a giant fly.
