Albert, an aristocrat from Paris, finds himself listless and bored with his pampered life, so he and his best friend Franz set out across the galaxy to the Luna, the surface of the moon for a Mardi Gras-like festival. While there, they meet the enigmatic Count of Monte Cristo, who takes an unusual liking to Albert; the two become fast friends. What Albert doesn't realize is the Count's connection to his family, and his real motive: revenge!
''One of the finest anime series ever made'' (animenewsnetwork.com)
Hey, people... sorry to barge into your discussion XD I just came here to leave and AMV made by me with this awesome serie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0FjaQXyzD8 . I hope you like it ^^ Gankutsuou is love <3
Yeah, I read it right after finishing the anime. A long time ago now. I made some posts about it in this clubs sub-forum, answering a few questions.
The Penguins Classic version - an uncut, 1200+ page version, with an intro by the author and extensive word definition section at the back - is the best release. I need to buy it again because it got knocked around when I carried it around...
I'm not a reader, yet I managed to read a huge novel, with small text in under a week. It's a lot more detailed than the anime, and it tells the story from start to finish with the events in order. The anime didn't because of a lack of time and a mystery/thriller sort of plot working better with such limited time to work with.
For example, the first 200 pages just cover what lead up to Edmond getting betrayed and his time in prison. The story doesn't move onto the Monte Cristo faze for a long time. And even when it does, the story has a different vibe because Alnert is just a secondary character in the novel - the story is told from the perspective of Edmond.
I highly recommend anyone who rates the anime highly reads it. If you loved the anime, then there's no reason you''ll dislike a far more detailed and in-depth version of the same story. You just need to get over the page count and some of the fillerish chapters, such as the one where the Rome bandit (forgot his name) gets his entire back-story explained.
I actually didn't mind Gankutsuou's ending. I agree that it lacked any real closure, but I felt it satisfactory, and it didn't affect my overall feelings towards it.
After having seen it, I'm now tempted to read the original novel. I've heard it's incredibly long - you've read it Aionic?
The only flaw of the anime is the ending. It lacked closure. But, then again, even the novel, which ended totally different, ended pretty badly. Even great stories often fall short at the final hurdle.
For me, the 2000+ only anime that can compare to Gankutsuou is Death Note. The story was brilliant at first and it's the best anime adaptation I've seen to date. As brilliant as Gankutsuou is in its own way, it failed as an adaptation, mainly because the novel is far too long to adapt faithfully.
Jacut, I know it isn't a TV series but have you seen Macross Zero - the OVA? That's beautiful inside and out; much like Gankutsuou. Worth a watch if you're looking for possible 10/10 content.
Yep, for me Gankutsuou is by far the best series of the 2000's, and I've seen at least 50/60 shows a year (more after 2005) for the last ten years, so I think I have seen all the potential great shows released in the decade. Among them, Gankutsuou is both the most revolutionnary and visually challenging, on top of having a tremendous direction and fantastic story/characters. Even GITS:SAC can't compare to it in my opinion, despite its excellence.
A true masterpiece to sum it up ;)
