A shy and weak otaku, who joined the Genshiken so he could stop hiding his otaku nature.
In the beginning of the series, Kanji hid his otaku nature, and was still fairly new to the whole concept. However, he matures as the series progresses and eventually becomes the Genshiken's 3rd club president.
In the second half of the anime, Sasahara gains romantic feelings for Ogiue Chika, another club member.
Sasahara also takes a job as a manga editor, later in the series.
Sasahara really likes the character 'Ritsuko Kettenkrad' from the anime, Kujibiki Unbalance.
