Sanzo Genjyo (玄奘三蔵) • Name: Genjyo Sanzo • Weight: 64 kg • Height: 177 cm • Eye Color: Purple • Hair Color: Golden Blond • Blood Type: O • Age: 23 • Birthday: November 29 Genjyo Sanzo is the central protagonist. He is a young, blond Buddhist monk who disregards many Buddhist principles; he smokes, drinks, gambles, swears, and generally follows his own path. Sanzo is aloof and cold towards his companions, but nevertheless cares for them. His primary weapon is a Smith and Wesson revolver, but he does use the holy Maten Sutra, a sutra he carried on his shoulders, when needed and occasionally is seen fighting in hand-to-hand combat. He often ends conflict within the group (usually caused by Gojyo, Goku, or both) with a large, white paper fan. Sanzo had previously been found in a river by his predecessor, Koumyou Sanzo, and was subsequently taken under the man's care and named Kouryuu. A child prodigy with phenomenal intellectual & spiritual talent & ability, he was socially ostracized and discrimated against by his jealous and resentful peers, who also spread malicious rumors that he was actually the effeminate Koumyou's very own catamite. However, he did manage to have at least 2 friends at the monastery, both of whom secretly fell in love with him, and who tragically became his enemies years later as an adult (shown in the first season of the anime and in the movie). Upon his master's death at the hands of demons who stole the Holy Sutra (which had been entrusted to Koumyou) Kouryou was chosen as a "Sanzo priest" by the Gods and he took on the title "The 31st of China, Genjo Sanzo", and was tasked by the monastery to go on a quest the very next day, in order to recover his late master's sutra . This was most fortunate as the rest of the monks in the monastery were massacred that very same night by the same demons who returned to steal the Evil Sutra (which had been entrusted to Kouryou). Genjo Sanzo then faced much toil & turmoil in the years following his departure, but finally accepted that he had to learn to live on his own terms. Soon after, Sanzo found Goku abandoned in a cave and, upon learning that he was Seiten Taisei, placed him under his care. Sanzo later encountered Hakkai and Gojyo on a mission. Feeling that Hakkai, a criminal, wasn't a threat, Sanzo agreed to keep tabs on him in exchange for Hakkai's freedom.
