One thing that keeps coming up in anime conversations are the usual, "if *insert anime here* didn't come out then *insert anime here* wouldn't be where it is." People seem to believe that the older the show is or if it came first makes it better or more respectable.

This is utterly wrong.

People seem to be stuck in this illusion that because it was first it is better. While the original idea may of come from another source, the ability to "adapt" concepts while still being original is what makes more contemporary anime stick out. I love Mobile Fighter G Gundam. It is my favorite of the whole series. Why? Well, I was young and impressionable and it was also my first gundam I have seen. The whole giant robot idea was new to me. I fell in love with the show, unique characters and mechs(very "unique"). After going a few more years I thought I would delve into the original series. Big mistake. While the original was good it really didn't warrant anything amazing when compare to G. The whole "random character forced into a battle" plot was already over done. The story was very generic. The only true redeeming quality was Char. But one character can't overcome the flaws of the series.

But it's thanks to these old shows that new shows can be better. Without Sunrises success with Mobile Suit Gundam we probably wouldn't have Gintama. Without Gunbuster and Diebuster we wouldn't have NGE. So out of respect, not because of the show being better because of it's age, will these shows be remembered. They paved the way to what we enjoy. After all, everyone is influenced by something right? Even if it was their own work.

Here's lookin' at you Anno.
