A few days ago I finished the anime Ouran High School Host Club. Usually this wouldn’t be a genre of anime/manga I wouldn’t be into but I absolutely LOVED IT. It really did remind me of one of my favorite anime/manga’s Fruits Basket. I guess I find the aspect of an independent, average, and lower-middle class girl somehow getting involved with a “family” of super-rich high-class society of boys to somewhat humble or better their lives appeal to me.
However, there was one aspect I could’ve done without. WHAT WAS THE DEAL WITH MITSUKUNI HANINOZUKA a.k.a. Hunny? On the first episode I thought he was cute because I thought he was like a super-gifted elementary/middle school age boy that skipped a few grades. But as soon as I found out that he was really one of the OLDEST students there (18!) I was COMPLETELY grossed out! I mean c’mon, please, it’s not a good enough excuse that he is like super short and blonde but please have some pride.
I know many of people would say, how about Momiji Sohma from Fruits Basket; he’s pretty much his double? Well to me, Momiji started out as a little boy around 14 and throughout the progression of the mangas and characters getting older he matured so much. Even from day one, Momiji NEVER had something so ridiculous as having stuffed toy that he pranced around with like a three year old and cried about it and being toddler-like cranky after a nappy. (*Slap Hunny’s face hard* “GROW UP ALREADY!!!”)
Also Momiji was ½ German which explains his hair color, Hunny, on the other hand is, by my understanding, 100% Japanese. What!? Does he go to the salon to bleach, frost, and cover with highlights? (dressing up for the part?)
All in all, what makes Hunny so endearing to the characters in the anime and manga as well as the outside fanbase? AM I ALONE when I say that it’s just down right creepy for a 18 year-old senior to be acting like that? What self-respecting high school senior would honestly act like that and people would find that OK?
Ahhh! I feel better now, just wanted to vent.
