Welcome to McBreel’s

A gentle baritone hum hung in the air as a young man played from his cello. Using his left hand, the young man’s delicate fingers danced along the neck of cello, while his right hand drew the bow across the strings perpendicularly. The young man smiled as the warm sounds of his cello filled the room. He closed his eyes as he continued, slightly swaying from side to side. As he swayed, his long bistre hair moved freely along in each direction. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a stage nor lights illuminating upon him. The wooden chair, which the young man rested, squeaked as he swayed. In fact, his only audience was the empty coffee couch and matching reclining chair, which circle the mahogany table in the center. Despite his surroundings, the musician performed euphorically.

Soft hands rested on his shoulders, as he continued. In smooth seductive voice she spoke, “I need you to do something for me.”

Without turning to converse, the young man kept playing, “And what is it you want me to do?”

“You know what I want.”

Jolted from his musical bliss, the young man paused instantly. “Wait… Right now?”

“Please… I promise it won’t take long.” Her hands slowly made their way down the young man’s chest, allowing her elbows to rest on his shoulders. The young woman pulled back her dark brown shoulder length hair, whispered softly in his ear, “pleeeeeasssssssse Hagi.” He could feel her plump lips brushing against his ear.

“Okay,” he gently replied, despite his changed mood.

The young lady smiled softly as she gave Hagi a hug.

Slightly irritated, he placed his cello into the royal purple velvet lined case. He sighed heavily as he stood up, hoping the young woman would change her tune. But the woman remained pleased with his response. “So where?”

She grinned as she responded. “In the bedroom.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I think I got it.”
“No… I think you need to move a little to the left,” the young woman commented.
“This way?”
“No… the other left. And umm make sure you really press it in hard.”
SQUISH!!! Hagi felt it. It wasn’t something he liked himself, but it got the job done. He looked over to the young woman and asked, “Does this suit you?”
The woman smiled. “Yes… yes it does suit me. Thank you.”
“Next time, I’m going to let you handle this.” Hagi crumbled up the piece of tissue in his hand.
The young woman glanced at Hagi over her thin-framed glasses. “Uh-un. That thing was huge.”
Hagi gave her a big smile, almost near the point of laughing. He closed his hand and began to walk to the bathroom, adjacent from the bedroom. "It was the size of a penny."
"You know, they're makin' them pennies bigger now,” she commented, standing in the hallway.
He could help but chuckle at the young woman's comment. "Yes. You are right. The coins are measured according to the size of house hold spiders." Hagi dropped the wadded tissue into the porcelain goddess and flushed.
“Government conspiracies,” she chuckled.
“Yes, all in order to scare you.”
“You know it!” The young woman began to walk away. “Wash your hands too… I don’t want spider mess all over me later on.”
Hagi started to shake his head and smile, but to his surprise, the young women seemed to predict his action, despite not being in the same room.
“Don’t shake your head cause you know you gonna be all up on this tonight.”
Stranger From The Mist
“What a very interesting site,” a baritone voice echoed through the dark room. A man stood in front of a lit fireplace, which illuminated a portion of his face and abdomen. The flickering light shown his dark brown hair which was slicked back and his neatly trimmed goatee. As the flames continued to dance about, a chain from his golden pocket gleamed, even in the darkness. He placed his large hands on the stone mantle and stared into the glowing light. He smiled wryly saying, “That girl… I must have her.”
“What girl, brother?” a male voice questioned, which echoed back to the man at the fireplace. The voice was light and airy, yet mellow and smooth: from a younger man. A tall thin shadow appeared in the doorway of the dark room. “It’s pretty dark in here. How about some light?”
The figure reached over and flicked on the light switch. A golden chandelier, which had been hidden in the darkness, brightened the room. Its dangling crystals glistened with rainbows. The room itself was elegant; Taupe wallpaper, decorated the perimeter, its diamond designed with dark red outlines brought out the colors of the matching sofa and loveseat. A throw rug lay under the two pieces of furniture, accompanied by a rosewood table, which sat in the center of the two couches.
“So… about this girl…” the man continued as he approached him. “Who is she?”
The man by the fireplace turned around, only to be face to face with a young man. The young man’s olive eyes brightened as he smiled. He appeared to be in twenties, despite having a face of a young boy. He was well dressed, donning a black two-button blazer while sporting a lavender dress shirt and matching tie. He also wore well-pressed slacks, which still had the creases down the middle, and wore a pair of polished jet oxfords. The young man brushed back his long blonde hair, while his golden watch and cufflinks glisten in the light. Overall, he was handsome and yet adorable.
The man who still stood by the fireplace smiled at the young visitor. “What brings you here… Solomon?” he asked, addressing him by name. “I thought you were still in Russia.”
“Actually, I returned a few hours ago. I thought Karl would have said something,” Solomon responded. “But let’s not change the subject brother. Who is this girl you speak of?”
The man lightly brushed his goatee with his fingertips as his almond eyes pierced into Solomon’s. He smiled once more and spoke. “I believe I have found something. Well someone rather, that might work with our plans.”
Solomon looked at his brother full of question. “So this girl that you speak of-.”
“Is the “someone” that might work in our plans,” the man said, finishing Solomon’s sentence. “There’s something special about her.”
“I see,” Solomon smiled softly. He stepped up to the fireplace and reached over to the side. He picked up an iron rod, which was used to move burning wood, and began to move a few logs around in the fireplace. “So what makes her so special?”
“I believe that she has a power that no other creature in this world possesses.” The man turned around, facing the now roaring fire contained within the fireplace. “However, I want to observe her a little more until this can be confirmed.”
“Sounds like you have you work cut out for you, huh brother?”
“For us Solomon,” the man replied, looking over his shoulder at Solomon. And I will need your help.”
Solomon’s eyes brighten in surprise. “My help?”
========================================================================================================================================================
“You’re back early,” Moses commented, looking up from the steps where he sat. His scythe that was against the wall earlier was now beside him. “Did you feed the girl?”
“She claims that she didn’t have any money to buy food. Seriously, we should just go ahead and drink her blood.” Karman nudged Cid, glaring at her from head to toe.
She stood there, holding her stomach groaning. Sighing heavily, she walked over to the wall and plopped down on the concrete ground. “I can’t believe I don’t have money.” Her stomach grumbled as if agreeing with her.
“I can’t believe you drug me out in daylight to get you something to eat.” Karman continued his deep glare at Cid, who was now slumped over. “Pfft… You’re still a worthless human.”
“Karman!” Moses snapped.
“I’m tired of you sticking up for this girl, Moses!” Karman argued, darting his eyes on him once more. “Like I said, she’s just a worthless human. In fact, her blood has much more value.” Instantly, Karman’s eyes turned from emerald to crimson red. His sinister eyes focused on the girl, who was still sulking against the brick wall.
In nothing flat, Moses grabbed his scythe and leapt towards the sulking girl. However, Karman was ahead of him, hunching over her. Seeing this, Moses hollered after him, “KARMAN NO!”
“It’s too late for her,” Karman menacingly spoke as he began to reach out for Cid. “I’m going to drain her dry.”
“Hey, I have an idea!” Cid, who oblivious to the commotion, jumped to her feet, knocking Karman to the ground. “I know who gots tons of food… and is FREE!”
Surprised, Moses lowered his scythe. “So, you know where you can get something to eat? And without us going into the light?”
Cid nodded her head with a cheerful smile. “Yup. Totz.”
Karman, who was a little disoriented from the fall, glanced at the two from the ground. “Moses, I know you’re not being manipulated by some little girl.” Karman’s eyes quickly changed back as he rose from the ground.
“HEY! I’m not little, okeh. I have you know, I’m an adult!” Cid proclaimed as she crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes.
“You sure act like a child,” Karman argued. "Therefore, you are a child."
“ Am not!”
“Are too!”
“If Imma kid, than you are too since you arguin’ with me,” she commented.
“I’ll show you who‘s a kid…” Karman opened his mouth, baring his white fangs.
Unfazed by his sudden action, Cid reached up and touched his fangs, “Oooo, so shiny. How do you keep ’em so white?”
“Hey!” Karman backed away quickly, wiping away Cid’s touch.
Noticing, Cid said innocently, “I don’t have cooties.”
“Do too. Or something like it.” Karman mumbled, crossing his arms.
“Still, you act like a little kid.”
“DO NOT!”
Moses shook his head shamefully as he watched the two go back and forth. After watching and listening to the two go at it for a minute, he took a deep breath and spoke, “So, are we going?”
At this point, Karman had Cid by the collar, whereas Cid was glaring back at Karman. Suddenly, Cid’s cold eyes lit up, and smiled. She replied cheerfully, “Yup.”
Confused, Karman let loose his grip on Cid’s collar and bluntly asked, “Where are we going?”
“To Breel’s… she totz has lotta food there.”
Going Into The Light
Karman hasted to the manhole, and removed its cover. The girl took a few steps outside, noticing the sun rising overhead. Karman waited, with his arms crossed, tapping his foot impatiently. She began to walk over, but suddenly stopped. There, she realized that she was about to go into a sewer.
Karman narrowed his eyes and grinded his teeth once more. “Come on human. I don’t have all day,” he growled. “Pfft…literally.”
The girl took a few steps backwards. “Like eww. I’m not walking around in a dirteh sewer,” she finally said. “That’s just… just… gross!”
Out of anger and frustration, he hasted over to where the girl was standing. In one fluid motion, Karman picked the girl up and swiftly leapt into the manhole. He tried to stand the girl up on the concrete floor, but she was a little dazed.
Her head was spinning and yet she was wondering how she got from one place to another in less than a few seconds. The girl tried to shake it off, but her surroundings kept spinning. She wanted to stand, but her legs felt like Jello and she was still dizzy.
Karman looked at the girl, still frustrated. “What’s wrong with you now?”
“Umm… ZOMG!!! Look at all the pretty colors!” the girl babbled. She shook her head once more, in attempt to clear out the cobwebs. She stood up slowly, using the brick wall to guide her. Then something hit her. “Umm… ewww. Wut is that smell?”
Karman looked around. The sewer was dark, and damp, although, there were spots of light that came from grates that drained rain water from above. The sound of flowing water filled the place. Brick walls formed a tunnel around them, while murky water flowed through the center of the sewer.
“Eww… it stinks!” The girl pinched her nose. “I can’t believe you brought me into a sewer!”
“Well I can’t believe I’m going out during the day,” he hissed back. “For all I care, you could of starved to death.”
The girl was speechless, but at the same time a little angry. “Look… you….you… vampire thingy! You’ve been a big meany ever since that one vampire thingy brought me to that creepy warehouse! And… and…” The girl clenched her fists together, tightly.
Karman glared at the angry girl. “And what human?”
“And… don’t call me human!” she yelled. “I do have a name ya’ know.”
“Yeah, and what do they call you?” Karman asked gruffly.
“Umm… well. I have several names. I have like… about umm… 20. I think. Lotta people call me Cid, Ciddy, ummm…. Scary German Guy… ummm.” Then the girl noticed Karman’s confused look. She giggled and said, “But you can call me Cid.”
“Cid huh? Hmph.” Karman glanced once more at his surroundings.
Cid looked at Karman out of curiosity and asked, “So like, wut is your name?”
Karman narrowed his eyes as usual, but didn’t turn in Cid’s direction. The last thing he wanted to do was provoke her into a argument with meaningless babble in between. He took a deep breath and finally said coldly, “They call me Karman. Now, are you hungry or not?”
Cid crossed her arms, sensing the coldness and bitterness in his voice. “Yesh… well yeah.”
“There’s another manhole about three miles from here. There’s a shopping place there with food. Surely you can get something to eat there,” Karman said as he began to walk down the dark tunnel.
Cid followed closely behind as they made their way down the tunnel. Cid thought to herself; three miles in a filthy sewer! And it smells! Well at least I’ll get somethin’ yummy like… like chocolate puddin’ or maybe a cow burger… or… Cid began to rub her stomach, thinking deeply about chocolate pudding and burgers. “Mmmm that sounds so tasty.”
Karman glanced strangely at the girl from behind his shoulder. “What are you babbling about now?”
“Umm… nothin’…. just whether to have chocolate puddin’ or a burger.” Cid held her head, trying to decide between the two.
Karman rolled his eyes. “Why not both?”
Surprised at Karman’s answer, Cid’s eyes brighten. She smiled and clapped her hands excitedly. “Good idea! Oh wait… do I have some money?” Still smiling, Cid reached into her front jean pockets and began to dig around. However, all she could pull out was a piece of string and a used sheet of fabric softener. Still in good spirit, she began to dig into her back pockets. “Maybe, there’s somethin’ back here.” She stopped and searched her back pockets, but her smile slowly faded away. “Ohh… I don’t have any money.” Cid took a deep breath and sighed. She stuck out her lower lip, displeased with her situation. She crossed her arms and slumped against the wall.
Karman took a few more steps, before realizing that Cid wasn’t following. He turned around, only to find her sitting against the wall, with her head buried in her crossed arms. “Great. What’s wrong with you? You said you wanna eat, didn’t you?”
Cid raised her head from her crossed arms, still pouting. “Yeah, but I gotz no money to pay for food. What am I gonna do now?” she sighed.
Karman’s piercing emerald eyes began to soften as he looked down at Cid. His usual cold expression slowly melted from his face. He wanted to chuckle to himself, but instead, one thought flowed through his head; she’s kinda cute when she’s sad. He almost started to smile at the thought, but shook it off. Karman narrowed his eyes, trying not to get lost in his thoughts. He leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. “So, we came all the way down here for nothing. Pfft,” Karman said in his usual tone. “Useless human.” He closed his eyes for a second, trying to avoid Cid. When he opened his eyes, he looked down, only to see Cid still pouting. She is cute when she’s sad. With this thought in mind, Karman quickly turned head and closed his eyes once more, trying to shake loose his thoughts about Cid.
Mystery Girl
The old wooden door creaked as Karman slowly pushed it open. He walked inside the vacant building, feeling relieved that he had survived another day, but still hungry… well rather thirsty. Moses walked in behind him, with the teenaged girl still cradled in his arms. He walked over and sat the girl in a corner, adjacent to the wooden door. Moses carefully propped her up against the brick wall that surrounded them. Even though, the girl still remained unconscious, she looked as if she were in a deep peaceful slumber.
Karman walked to another corner of the old warehouse. The wooden handles of the scythe and spear clinked against the concrete floor, as Karman propped them against the wall. He glanced over at Moses, who was getting the girl settled. Slightly angry and frustrated, Karman walked over to Moses, pulling off his black hood, and scratching his neatly cut chestnut hair.
“I still can’t see why we couldn’t feed on her. I mean, she’s just a worthless human,” Karman growled. “Besides, neither one of us has been able to feed for quite sometime.”
“I know. But, I’m still curious as to why this human wasn’t attacked by those corpses back at the grave yard.” Moses said as he pulled off his hood. “ It was just interesting to see those things return to their graves, after the girl had fallen.”
“That is true… I guess.” Karman mumbled, pushing back his thick framed glasses. He leaned against the wall, arms folded, acting as if he wasn’t interested in Moses’ comment. Instead, he was still fixed on the idea of drinking the teenaged girl’s blood.
“I’ll be back. I’m going to find some water,” Moses said, pulling up his hood.
“Water? What for?” He demanded, still leaning against the brick wall.
“I’m sure this human will need water, once she has regain consciousness,” he said as he walked over and grabbed his scythe. “So, you stay here. I’ll be back before the sun rises.”
Karman glared. “Wait… why are you sticking me with a human that I can’t even eat?”
“We went through this already,” Moses retorted, slightly agitated. “Just don’t feed on her while I’m gone, alright?”
Feeling the aggravation in Moses’ voice, Karman stood up straight, staring coldly into Moses’ green piercing eyes. Moses noticed Karman’s frustration with him. His brows lowered, still feeling the coldness of Karman’s stare. He took his scythe and placed it between them, with the blade of the scythe at the same length as his friend’s throat. Karman stood up straight, not flinching at the thought of his throat being slashed. Moses stared back coldly into Karman’s emerald eyes.
“Do not kill her,” Moses said, still holding the scythe.
“Fine. Just hurry back,” Karman said, slowly changing his tone.
Moses nodded, and in an instant, he had left.
Karman glanced over at the unconscious girl, still feeling the need to feed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Great. I’m stuck here with a human I can’t even eat,” Karman huffed. “What’s the point of me watching her.” He folded his arms, and leaned back against the wall. “Pfft. Humans.”
“Mmm… I like wanna feed the cows. No… no… that’s food is for the penguins.” The girl’s lightly toned voice, filled the corner of the warehouse. Startled, Karman darted to the corner for his spear. He quickly returned, having the tip of the spear near the girl’s neck.
“You can’t give penguins the cows food. I know… you can give them chocolate puddin’. Mmm, that totz sounds good about now,” the girl babbled.
She yawned and stretched a little before opening her eyes. Karman still had his spear drawn, his teeth clenched together, as if he was going into battle. The girl glanced at him, then carefully examined the spear that stared her in the face.
“Hey… do like, have some chocolate puddin’?” she said smiling. “Cause, like I can really go for a cup… no pool of chocolate puddin’.”
“Cho-coo-late pud-ding?” Karman stumbled through the words, in attempt to comprehend what the girl was saying.
“Un hun. It’s sooo good. Z-Oh-my-gawd… you gotta try it!” the girl said as she slowly stood up, completely ignoring the spear, which was inches away from her throat. “ We totz need to find that stuff!”
Karman slowly lowered his spear, seeing that the girl wasn’t a threat. But still, he didn’t shake the idea of having her as a meal. “ You mean that’s what you humans eat?” Karman still rolled up in a ball of confusion.
“ Oh, not all the time. We humans… wait… did you just say humans?” the girl asked, slightly confused herself. “I mean, aren’t you human too?”
Karman looked at the girl coldly, as he did before to Moses. He replied with a stern “No.”
“ Well… wut are you? Wait! I wanna guess. Ooo, oh… umm you’re no a zombie I know…”
“ A zombie?” Karman looked at her with curiosity. “ What’s a zombie?”
“ Wut? You don’t know what a zombie is? Umm, they’re dead people, that like come out of their graves late at night, and umm walk around lookin’ for brains and stuff,” she explained. “ Zombies are totz coolz… like….like….chocolate puddin’. Oh boy, I must be hungry.”
Karman, still a bit confused, shook his head to try to clear his head. “ So those things at the grave yard, are zombies?”
The girl nodded. “Un hun… yeah. They totz like me… maybe cause I think they’re cool and stuff. Which they are!”
Karman stood there scratching his chestnut hair. He was slightly amazed by the human girl, but at the same time, slightly confused. Out of all the humans that he’d crossed paths with, he never met a human like her; Nor one that he actually talked to for more than a few seconds, before killing them. However, the only thing he could think of was “ Okay.”
“So like… what am I doing here?” she questioned. “ I remember being in the cemetery but then somethin’ happened and now I’m here… By the ways, it’s kinda creepy in here.”
Karman’s emerald eyes narrowed. “ Look human, I didn’t bring you here,” he folded his arms, still holding the spear in his hand. Once more, he leaned against the cool brick wall.
“Wait… if you didn’t bring me here, then who did? I know I didn’t like teleport here or somethin’. I don’t have that kinda power.”
“I brought you here,” another voiced echoed through the warehouse. A figure, about Karman’s height, walked up to the girl. It wore a long black cloak, which virtually covered the head and shadowed its face. The figure also had a scythe in one hand and a beaten up gray pale in the other. The figure placed the pale on the concrete floor, and removed the hood, revealing a young male. Unlike Karman, he had ebony hair, which was long enough to cover his right eye, while the rest of his hair was short. His emerald eyes that were once filled with coldness and anger were now warm and sincere. “ You lost consciousness in the cemetery, so I brought you back here.”
“Wait…” the girl said in surprise. “ I was unconscious?” She stared at the floor for a moment then looked up. “ Oh, I must of used a lotta energy… oh well… it happens all the time.”
“It happens all the time?” Karman repeated. “ What do you mean by that?”
“ Well… like…” the girl’s words were cut short by her growling stomach. “ Umm… you guys like have any food… or puddin’? Or even a cow?”
The young man looked at her, then looked over to the concrete floor, which was now dotted with specs of light. “ Dammit, it’s daylight. We can’t go out now.” He looked over at the girl, who was now holding her growling belly, while Karman continued to lean against the wall. “ Well, I brought you some water, maybe that will hold you over until sunset.”
The girl walked over to where the gray pale sat. She peaked in the pale to see the murky water. “Umm… this water is kinda… well dirty. I don’t wanna drink that.”
“ Pfft… don’t be so picky,” Karman said, narrowing his eyes more. “You’re lucky to be alive. If I had it my way, I would have drank your blood by now.”
The girl’s eyes widen. “ Ooohh… I know what you are! You’re a vampire aren’t you? YAY!!! I guessed it… you are a vampire! Ooh, umm what’s my prize? I know! A free pass to feed the penguins or the cows. Or maybe both! Umm but I could really go for some puddin’ though.”
Both young men turned and looked at each other, thinking the same thing; I’m not going out there in daylight. Then they turned to the girl, who was still holding her stomach.
“ Karman, why don’t you go?” Moses insisted. “ I brought her here and got her water. I think it’s a fair trade.”
“ That’s more than enough of a reason why you should go,” Karman replied, pushing his glasses back on his nose. “Obviously, you‘re the one that‘s taking care of her.”
Then there was silence.
Moses stood there scratching his head, thinking. “ Umm… rock, paper, scissors?”
Karman stood up straight and grinned. “ Good enough.”
Both young men drew out their weapons slowly, while exchanging glares. Suddenly, with extreme haste, they both leaped towards the middle of the warehouse. To the human eye, it almost appeared as a black streak, zooming by, followed by a gust of wind. The girl’s hair and jacket blew backwards as she watched the two intensely as they met at the center of the warehouse.
Moses drew his scythe quickly, as did Karman with his spear. Both young men stood there with their weapons drawn as if they were to commence battle. While moving they’re weapons up and down, they chanted in unison, “ Rock. Paper. Scissors. SHOOT!”
Moses held his scythe to the point were the blade was vertical while Karman’s spear blade was horizontal.
Moses’ glare turned into a smile. “ Scissors beats paper.”
Karman’s glare faded away as he noticed the outcome of the game. “ Umm, best two out of three?” he asked as he grinned.
Moments later, Moses led Karman and the girl to the back of the warehouse, were another entrance was located. “ If you exit here, there’s a manhole in the alleyway. You can take the underground sewer to avoid the sunlight,” Moses informed. “ You should be okay down there.”
Karman pulled up his hood. “ I can’t believe I’m going outside, in broad daylight at that,” he mumbled. With his spear still in his hand, Karman slowly opened the door. He looked outside and noticed that the alley was in shadow. There in the center of the alley, was the manhole. He turned and looked at the girl, who stood there waiting patiently. Karman turned back around and rolled his eyes, then huffed, “ Come on human… let’s go.”
Author's Notes - I'll get to them soon... Just enjoy the story. THIS ONE IS FOR YOU CIDDY!
Beyond the Grave
It was a peaceful night for the old cemetery on 13th Street. Bullfrogs croaked one after another from a stream nearby, as the moon overhead illuminated the land. The crickets accompanied the bullfrogs with their rhythmic chirping, thus making it a peaceful place.
Thick clouds began to pass overhead, blocking the moon‘s light, rendering darkness throughout the tombstone-covered field. As the cool breeze swept though, a thick mist began to emerge from the darkness. It slowly engulfed grave sites, tombstones and monuments, although it didn’t interrupt the symphonic sounds of the night.
Squish! Squash! “Damn it! Moses, you didn’t tell me there was a freaking pond here,” Karman said as he sloshed his way through the stream. The stream itself wasn’t high; In fact, it was several inches above his ankles. If it hadn’t been for his calf-length boots, his feet would have been completely soaked.
“Sorry, I didn’t know there was water here.” Moses removed his hood and stared into the heavy mist. “I thought this would be a good short cut, since we need to be back at the warehouse before dawn.”
“Why don’t we just go into haste mode and fly back to the warehouse?” Karman asked as he took another step in the stream. The sounds of the bullfrogs and crickets stop suddenly; One could hear the swishing sound of the two crossing the stream. “We could have been back by now.”
“We need to conserve our energy. Not to mention that we need to feed.” Moses scratched his black hair. His green eyes peered into the darkness. “Anyway, I believe if we keep straight, we should be on dry land.”
Karman took one more step before hitting solid ground. His wet boots continued to slosh as walked across the grass. Once the thick mist settled, visibility dropped dramatically. “Moses. You’re going to have to lead. I can’t see anything.”
Moses swished through the stream. He couldn’t see much himself, but he kept going. Moses stumbled across the grass, bumping into Karman, knocking him over.
“Hey!” Karman attempted to stand up, using his spear to assist him.
“You’re right. I can‘t see anything myself,” Moses said as he picked up his scythe. “Last time I was here, it wasn’t this dark. However, it’s better this way. The darkness is the only thing that will protect us.”
A cool breeze swept through the cemetery. The thick clouds above began to move, causing moon to once more illuminate the cemetery. The mist started to thin out, and Moses’ and Karman’s vision returned.
“What are we doing in a graveyard?” Karman questioned, as he cut through the various tombstones.
“Like I said Karman, this is a shortcut,” Moses explained as he led the way.
The two continued through the cemetery, glancing at various monuments and graves. Suddenly, Moses stopped. In a blink of an eye, he drew his scythe, which cut the air with streaks of silver and white. Slightly confused, Karman asked Moses.
“Why did you stop?”
“There’s someone over there.” Moses pointed ahead using his scythe. A dark figure stood in the distance. It moved slightly, almost as if it was turning to face the two. Did the figure see them? Moses wasted no time. He went into haste and flew towards the figure, his scythe pointed towards the target.
“Moses!” Karman grinded his teeth, and took off after Moses, with his spear drawn.
As Moses flew towards the figure, something began to emerge from the ground. A human hand or what was left of it, grabbed Moses’ foot. He fell to the ground, inches from where the figure stood, dropping his scythe beside him. Moses looked to see what caught his foot. To his surprise, half a human corpse had risen from the ground. Karman arrived in time to see the corpse emerging.
“What the hell?” Karman took his spear and pierced through the corpse’s rotting arm. This did not keep the grotesque creature from pulling Moses’ leg. Moses quickly reached for his scythe, and sliced off its arm. Instead of screaming with agony, the corpse hissed. “What is this thing?” Karman asked, as he raised his spear for another kill, in this case, an attempt. He quickly swung the spear horizontally, slicing the neck of the corpse. Immediately, the corpse’s head fell to the ground, its body following.
Moses stood up, with his scythe in hand, “I have no clue what that was.” Despite his ordeal, was calm. He quickly turned around to see if the dark figure was still there. But there was nothing but an old crumbled tombstone.
Karman quickly raised his spear in defense. “Where did it go?” He grinded his teeth, enraged. He quickly glanced around the graveyard. There was nothing but the light mist that had blanketed the cemetery. “Dammit. It must have gotten away.”
“Yes. Let’s hurry and get back to the warehouse.” Before Moses could take a step, the ground beneath his feet began to rumble. He dug his scythe into the ground in attempt to brace himself. Karman followed suit using his spear. “What is this? An earthquake?” Moses questioned holding on to the scythe.
“I don’t know.” Karman replied as he held on to the grounded spear. Both young men braced themselves as the earth beneath them shook violently. More and more earth rumbled, causing bits of rocks, dirt, and other debris to crumble. Fingers, hands, arms, and various limbs began to emerge from the shaking earth. “What in…” Before Karman could finish his sentence, a hand reached out from the ground and grabbed his ankle. Moses quickly swung his scythe, lobbing off the bony hand.
“We better get out of here.” Moses advised. He took up his scythe, but before he made a move, Moses noticed the misty covered cemetery was now littered with several corpses.
Karman pulled his spear from the ground and took a defensive stance. “Where did these things come from? Aren’t these things already dead?”
Several of the corpses began to approach the two. Many of them were well rotted out; skin, or what was left of it, dangled from their bony bodies. Their eyes, if there were eyes, where blood shot. Some were missing fingers, and arms, a few were missing legs, but managed to limp or crawl their way towards them.
Moses gritted his teeth. “They keep coming.”
“Do you think we can defeat the all?” Karman asked, still in his stance.
“I don’t know. We should take out as many as we can,” Moses said as he readied his scythe.
Karman checked over his shoulder to see how many, if there were any, corpses approaching from behind. There were none, though, there was something else there. The figure had returned. Karman grinded his teeth once more and mumbled “I see you now.” Karman leapt hastily towards figure spear first. But instead of impaling the figure, his spear had gone through another corpse, who had emerged from the ground. He shook the corpse from his spear, and aimed it towards the figure. “Who are you?!” he commanded holding the spear defensively.
The figure moved slightly. Karman held up his spear, ready for a possible kill. It moved a little more, close enough to the illuminating moonlight. Karman squinted through his large framed glasses, spear at hand. The figure moved a little more before collapsing to the ground. Karman walked over, only to discover that the figure that stood in front of him, was a human girl, in her mid to late teens.
He lowered his spear, noticing that the girl was unconscious. Moses, who had began to swing his scythe, immediately stopped. Shocked and confused, he watched closely as the risen corpses halted instantly. Slowly, they began to return to their various graves from which they came. Moses sighed; relieved that he and Karman did not have to fight them all off.
“Moses!” Karman yelled from across the slightly misty cemetery.
Moses quickly flew to his comrade. He saw Karman’s spear was grounded, while Karman himself hunched over the unconscious girl, trying to decide whether to drink her blood, or to leave her be. He looked over at Moses, who was now standing beside him.
“I think I found out who that was in the distance,” Karman commented, staring at the fallen stranger from head to toe. “A human girl.”
Moses looked at the unconscious girl and then again at Karman. “I wonder why she’s here, especially with the dead rising from the ground the way they did?”
“It doesn’t matter now. Let’s just drink her blood and hurry back to the warehouse,” Karman insisted, pulling his scythe from the ground.
“No. I like to ask this human a few things.” Moses carefully studied the girl before taking her in his arms. “Besides, daylight is coming soon. We won’t be able to make it to the warehouse without being burned alive.”
“Fine.” Disappointed, Karman took Moses’ scythe and flew out of the cemetery, with Moses following closely behind.
The cemetery fell silent again. Once more, several clouds covered the moon, eliminating all lunar light. Deep in the cemetery, another figure stood in the distance. The figure was heavy set, and its crimson eyes glowed in the darkness.
“Humph… the Schiff? And a human girl?” The clouds slowly moved, partially revealing a man who was dressed in a burgundy red suit. His black tie was neatly tucked, and a blue rose sat in his double-breasted coat pocket. He brushed his neatly trimmed goatee with his fingertips, grinning from ear to ear. “Something like this might deserve a little attention.”
Beyond the Grave
It was a peaceful night for the old cemetery on 13th Street. Bullfrogs croaked one after another from a stream nearby, as the moon overhead illuminated the land. The crickets accompanied the bullfrogs with their rhythmic chirping, thus making it a peaceful place.
Thick clouds began to pass overhead, blocking the moon‘s light, rendering darkness throughout the tombstone-covered field. As the cool breeze swept though, a thick mist began to emerge from the darkness. It slowly engulfed grave sites, tombstones and monuments, although it didn’t interrupt the symphonic sounds of the night.
Squish! Squash! “Damn it! Moses, you didn’t tell me there was a freaking pond here,” Karman said as he sloshed his way through the stream. The stream itself wasn’t high; In fact, it was several inches above his ankles. If it hadn’t been for his calf-length boots, his feet would have been completely soaked.
“Sorry, I didn’t know there was water here.” Moses removed his hood and stared into the heavy mist. “I thought this would be a good short cut, since we need to be back at the warehouse before dawn.”
“Why don’t we just go into haste mode and fly back to the warehouse?” Karman asked as he took another step in the stream. The sounds of the bullfrogs and crickets stop suddenly; One could hear the swishing sound of the two crossing the stream. “We could have been back by now.”
“We need to conserve our energy. Not to mention that we need to feed.” Moses scratched his black hair. His green eyes peered into the darkness. “Anyway, I believe if we keep straight, we should be on dry land.”
Karman took one more step before hitting solid ground. His wet boots continued to slosh as walked across the grass. Once the thick mist settled, visibility dropped dramatically. “Moses. You’re going to have to lead. I can’t see anything.”
Moses swished through the stream. He couldn’t see much himself, but he kept going. Moses stumbled across the grass, bumping into Karman, knocking him over.
“Hey!” Karman attempted to stand up, using his spear to assist him
.
“You’re right. I can‘t see anything myself,” Moses said picking up his scythe. “Last time I was here, it wasn’t this dark. However, it’s better this way. The darkness is the only thing that will protect us.”
A cool breeze swept through the cemetery. The thick clouds above began to move, causing moon to once more illuminate the cemetery. The mist started to thin out, and Moses’ and Karman’s vision returned.
“What are we doing in a graveyard?” Karman questioned, as he cut through the various tombstones.
“Like I said Karman, this is a shortcut,” Moses explained as he led the way.
The two continued through the cemetery, glancing at various monuments and graves. Suddenly, Moses stopped. In a blink of an eye, he drew his scythe, which cut the air with streaks of silver and white. Slightly confused, Karman asked Moses.
“Why did you stop?”
“There’s someone over there.” Moses pointed ahead using his scythe. A dark figure stood in the distance. It moved slightly, almost as if it was turning to face the two. Did the figure see them? Moses wasted no time. He went into haste and flew towards the figure, his scythe pointed towards the target.
“Moses!” Karman grinded his teeth, and took off after Moses, with his spear drawn.
As Moses flew towards the figure, something began to emerge from the ground. A human hand or what was left of it, grabbed Moses’ foot. He fell to the ground, inches from where the figure stood, dropping his scythe beside him. Moses looked to see what caught his foot. To his surprise, half a human corpse had risen from the ground. Karman arrived in time to see the corpse emerging.
“What the hell?” Karman took his spear and pierced through the corpse’s rotting arm. This did not keep the grotesque creature from pulling Moses’ leg. Moses quickly reached for his scythe, and sliced off its arm. Instead of screaming with agony, the corpse hissed. “What is this thing?” Karman asked, as he raised his spear for another kill, in this case, an attempt. He quickly swung the spear horizontally, slicing the neck of the corpse. Immediately, the corpse’s head fell to the ground, its body following.
Moses stood up, with his scythe in hand, “I have no clue what that was.” Despite his ordeal, was calm. He quickly turned around to see if the dark figure was still there. But there was nothing but an old crumbled tombstone.
Karman quickly raised his spear in defense. “Where did it go?” He grinded his teeth, enraged. He quickly glanced around the graveyard. There was nothing but the light mist that had blanketed the cemetery. “Damn it. It must have gotten away.”
“Yes. Let’s hurry and get back to the warehouse.” Before Moses could take a step, the ground beneath his feet began to rumble. He dug his scythe into the ground in attempt to brace himself. Karman followed suit using his spear. “What is this? An earthquake?” Moses questioned holding on to the scythe.
“I don’t know.” Karman replied as he held on to the grounded spear. Both young men braced themselves as the earth beneath them shook violently. More and more earth rumbled, causing bits of rocks, dirt, and other debris to crumble. Fingers, hands, arms, and various limbs began to emerge from the shaking earth. “What in…” Before Karman could finish his sentence, a hand reached out from the ground and grabbed his ankle. Moses quickly swung his scythe, lobbing off the bony hand.
“We better get out of here.” Moses advised. He took up his scythe, but before he made a move, Moses noticed the misty covered cemetery was now littered with several corpses.
