I do appreciate music very much, and in anime as in any visual fiction, it's essential for a title to have good music. A good background score can make a scene and the anime itself and on the other side if a poor score is used it can ruin it bitterly.

Here are some anime titles whose powerful music had left a big impression on me.

In no particular order.

Saint Seiya

Akira

Rose Of Versailles

Queen Millennia Movie

Angel's Egg

Nausicaa

Berserk

Monster

Seirei No Moribito

Mushishi

Legend Of Galactic Heroes

Nodame Cantabile

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Anime Relations: Versailles no Bara

As always, the spring season is always the most promising season for me, through it, some hopeful choices of series reveals as not that good, but I almost always end up watching more series from the Spring Season than any other season.

Ring ni Kakero 1: Shadow

Monday, 12 of April, 2010

Unfortunately, My Laptop died, so as a consequence I can't watch high resolution episodes for the time being. With that said, I am limited to my old desktop AMD 2000mhz and the, fortunately, still usual, but scarcer, XVid version releases.

I watched recently these ones;

Major #130 – 7.5
As usual great episode here, great comeback of a great sports shounen series. The charm with Major is it’s drama, and game conclusions. Here, you just don’t know who will win in the end of the episode, you never do, it increases the interest, and of course the story is a very good one too.

Ookiku Furikabutte Natsu no taikaihen #1 – 7.5
Great return of a great series. Very different from Major, this shounen sports anime focus on different aspects of the baseball world and it’s a genuine high school story.
Unlike Major, which came with Goro as a kid in the first season and is currently with Goro in the Major league in the US as an adult.
Ookiku Furikabutte focus mainly on the High school baseball years without trying to be more mature than it really is, and there’s where it’s charm resides. It distances itself from other baseball series too when it brings forward the whole team as a set of characters and not only the pitcher and the catcher like the rest of the baseball series, so this one definitely has a fresh feeling into it. The cast of characters are very good too, very different but a very good bunch of good natured high school baseball kids.

It’ll be fun to watch both series in the same season, even though I’d prefer to watch them on different seasons.

B Gata H Kei #1 & #2/ - 6.5
Surprisingly I was able to enjoy this echii anime. It had some very funny parts. The premise might look over the top, but it was more realistic than I was expecting. The first episode was more funny scenes, but it's the usual with this kind of anime. I'll see how far can I watch this one.

Arakawa Under The Bridge #1 – 6.0
Shaft and Bakemonogatari comes immediately to mind and a feeling of uneasiness comes to me as well as I watch this. I disliked Bakemonogatari because it used the usual cliched otaku obligations like the llolita character and the, now usual, fanservice in a different style where fanservice was not used before. So I don't really dislike the style here, but it reminds me of bakemonogatari. I'll see how this goes for now. But if they start to use the usual otaku themes I'll drop it immediately.

Heroman #1 & #2 – 6.2
Pretty simplistic story we had here, still, I enjoyed the art style and missed this character designs from Bones. I’ll watch more of this for now.
ANN lists the series as having 26 episodes.

Oh yeah, it was interesting to see a cameo appearance of Stan in the series as well.

Hakuoki Shisengumi Kitan #1/ - 5.6
This series shows the Shisengumi seen by another perspective, yet again, this time a "bishounen" perspective. I was not really into this perspective to speak the truth, of course, it is mainly made porpusely for females, but those stereotypes are not so true these days. I just didn't like the way how Hijikata Toshizou and his men were portrayed, childish and with too much "coolness".
I'll see the next episode to see if I can bear with it.

Senkou no Night Raid #1 - 5.9
Special secret team, possibly governamental team, with special abilities doing special missions. The difference here is that this was set in the 1930's.

Ok stuff here. Not really impressive, but it might turn out a better series.

Arakawa Under The Bridge #2 – 6.0
The beginning of the episode had some echii thoughts from the part of the male lead concerning his new lady friend, so I ended not appreciating it much the rest of the episode presented new and weird characters to help in the weird mix we’re having here.
I can’t say that I’m enjoying the characters, but I’m not disliking them either.

Giant Killing #1 & #2/26 –
This sports shounen anime is about soccer. It starts with a small amateur team playing against a big team in the English cup. The thing is that the manager of the small team is a Japanese, apparently an intelligent man which can do great deeds at coaching, the small team eventually loosed the game against the bigger team from the premier league, but it was a great accomplishment for an amateur team. Now our story begins when the Japanese team returns to japan to work as a manager on his old team he abandoned to play overseas years ago, the thing is that this team is in pretty bad shape and there are some people that are kind of the bosses of the team and will never sit on the bench as substitutes, but with the arrival of the new coach this will change.

At first the arrogant and cool attitude from the lead character, the manager, was annoying me a little but as the story progressed that detail was left behind.
From what I’ve seen this season, this anime stands above the rest, except of course, the second seasons of already established series like Major and Ookiku.
I guess I have a weak spot for Sports anime. Probably because I have some sport background myself.

Soccer is the king of sports in Europe, south America and in some countries in Africa and Asia, and despite it’s big name, I haven’t properly watched any soccer full anime yet, I watched some random episodes of Tsubasa decades ago, but still never got to watch the whole thing.

Hakuoki Shisengumi Kitan #2/ - 5.6
This episode was better than the first, it was more serious and fitting for a Shisengumi adaptation series. I didn’t enjoyed much the first episode because it focused mostly on that little girl. I hope things continue in this way, because if it continue this way, the series will become a good memory.

Rainbow #1 – 7.0
Very interesting serious anime we got here. Some kids (16s, 17s) are sent into prison somewhere in 1950s for among other crimes for defending themselves in various situations.
There they find a very distorted guard, a dubious guard and a new cell mate which whom they’ll have to befriend.

Dark series, serious tone, not your usual anime. Perhaps influenced by that Prison Break US series, though I never watched any episode of it, so I can’t judge it.

Anyway, it impressed me.

Major #136 / Sixth Season 7/25 – 7.5
Goro has been having psychological problems that limit him in his playing, like not being able to overcome an hidden trauma and doing bad performances on important parts of important games. So the show has been down in a new territory, but we’ve been having too many episodes of that already, let’s hope Goro gets over with it in the next episode.
But as always, the storytelling in Major is very good and manages to keep the viewer hanged in every bit of scene.

House of Five Leaves #4/12 – 7.2
I’ve overcome the character design already and easily in the first episode, so the story is already affecting me in a positive way. The characters are likeable and mysterious, the plot keeps growing slowly and the show seems to have a nice direction unlike the other work of the mangaka, let's just hope he doesn't destroy it all in the course of the 12 episodes.

Ookiku Furikabutte Natsu no Taikai-Hen #6/? – 7.5
This season doesen’t focus only in one or two characters and focus the whole team and friends, so the cast is pretty big, that’s very nice to see and the reality factor is huge here. Also, a perfect show to watch in the spring time.

Giant Killing #7/26 – 5.7
Hah. This show has managed to disappoint me.
The storytelling is totally out of place, the characters are weak, dialogue is poor and the pace of the scenes doesn’t feel right.
Only in the last episode the football (soccer) scenes were well animated, other than these, we always had the talking heads of the players animated still during the games and very few action with their foots and actual full body shots. It also comes to me that the author wants to do an awesome sports anime and the result has been vaguely average so far. The manga version is probably better as usual, but this anime version has suffered pretty bad so far.

Maybe my standard of a good sports anime means “Major” these days, so I may uncounsciously compare all other new sports series with Major. But thinking about it again, I have been loving Okkiku, and it is also a sports anime. So maybe Giant Killing just doesn’t have it.

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei /The Tatami Galaxy #1 to 4/11 – 7.5
Very interesting newcomer from the already established director of Kaiba among other ones, Masaaki Yuasa. I think I’ve written around here in it’s respective season topic how I was astonished by Kaiba TV series. Kaiba was indeed something completely original and definitely out of the flow.
This time around Yuasa comes with a new series, a little bit similar in art style and animation with the latest SHAFT stuff, but without SHAFT flaws and fanservice, which comes pretty high in my book.
The story here is pretty strange and totally original. It’s like every episode is set in an alternative universe with the same characters from the episode before over and over, and have the same time frame which is about the lead character first two years of college. All the characters as used in this kind of artistic animes, are pretty peculiar and interesting. The lead has the “weakling” modern standard maion character syndrome, but he still has some interesting points to him.
The directing is very solid and manages the themes well, the next episodes will still be pretty cool episodes for sure, so now, it all comes down if the ending is wrapped in a good way.
One thing that I had trouble with, was the main character’s narratives. Looks like he’s speaking almost in fast forward. They’re way too fast and I find myself hitting the pause sometimes during each episode.

This was quite the surprise for me because I’ve forgotten that a new series by Yuasa was coming. A very pleasant surprise. Most exciting new show, I've seen in a while.

Senkou no Night Raid #2/13 - 5.8
The story wasn’t bad, but not good either. The anime tries to look smart by triying to pull historical facts of the beginning of the 20th century, mixing it with a very average to me, style of storytelling.
It didn’t reallyu bothered me this episode, but it hadn’t anything that makes me want to watch the next episode.

I tried, but couldn’t watch any of these episodes.
B Gata H Kei 6/12 -
Hakuouki Shisengumi Kitan #4/13 -
Arakawa Under The Bridge #5/13 –

So I'm dropping all these four series.

Giant Killing #10/26 – 5.0
This anime is so wrong about football (soccer) that I can’t bear to watch it anymore.
I was patient, but if at the 10th episode I still don’t have a little hope for the show, experience tells me to drop it.
Status; Dropped

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei /The Tatami Galaxy # 7/11 – 5.8
They used a lot of fanservice and weird otaku fantasies on this episode, so it was almost a complete fail to me.
Apart from not making any sense, the story that was having some links between the first episodes, but now it only seems to have one of those links at his time, but this time around these last couple of episodes were very close to each other.
I miss the romantic vibe from the first episodes.

House of Five Leaves #8/12 – 6.9
The only show that has managed to develop in a pleasant way this season, apart from the second season of some series.
Now, the fear is that it may not wrap the story well enough for a 12 episode anime.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, 17 of September, 2010

I have been losing interest on modern anime so as a consequence I forgot to post my thoughts.

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei /The Tatami Galaxy #11/11
This anime started pretty well, but due to it's weird nature it went overboard on the course of it's unusual story and lost the contact with quality along the way.
I was hoping better from Masaaki Yuasa.

I ended giving it a 7/10 anyway. But in reality it's more of a 6.5.

House of Five Leaves #12/12
Now this one could had turned into a longer story and a better one as well, the story was consistent throughout the way, original, the art was good and the characters were likeable, sometimes the plot would go very slowly but that didn't took quality of the anime.

A good 7/10
