There are some anime that "define" the medium. They may or may not be "good", but they are well known for various reasons.

TODO: more and details why later... if I feel like it...

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai (My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute)

This design is featured in Shishio's Custom Lists & Profiles (club).

If you came here from CSS How to fill in the missing or broken covers on your layout, my Tags and Covers CSS generator tool is only briefly mentioned in this blog post. (just click the link to go to the web page for it)

Features:
* Works with MAL's advanced CSS editor
* Hover the anime title or half-cover image to expand the cover image to full
* "More" works

* The theme is matched for my own list. Most of the background and border colors are marked with comments. Change them to match your own background image.

CSS (copy/paste into the MAL advanced CSS editor):
MAL Tool templates:
CSS Template: "[href*="/[ID]/"]:after{ background: url([IMGURL]); }" (without quotes)
Line Matching Template: "/[ID]/" (without quotes)

Or just use this (make sure to put in YOUR user name):
https://mal-image.appspot.com/anime/BurntJelly/?code=%5Bhref%2A%3D%22%2F%5BID%5D%2F%22%5D%3Aafter%7B+background%3A+url%28%5BIMG%5D%29%3B+%7D

Alternative (simple) version:
* Works in MAL advanced CSS editor
* "More" does not work
* Blue/orange theme
* Uses more common #more* cover CSS
MAL Tool templates:
CSS Template: "#more[ID] {background-image: url([IMGURL]);}" (without quotes)
Line Matching Template: "#more[ID] " (without quotes, the space after is important)

A new anime season is upon us. Let's see how it is...

Buddy Complex (completed)

This is a mecha action series that is "so Sunrise". In the first episode, the main character is sent to the future, presumably to be some kind of hero.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren (completed)

Second season of Chuunibyou. More Rikka is always welcome.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren Lite (completed)

Chuunibyou second season side episodes.

D-Frag! (dropped)

The girls in this show are crazy. I'm not a big fan of comedies, and this barely had enough craziness to keep me interested through the first episode.

Go! Go! 575 (completed)

Only 4 minutes and only lasting 4 episodes. It's a cute slice-of-life comedy, but nothing really happens and it isn't exactly hilarious.

Hamatora The Animation (dropped)

Unique and colorful visuals. The first episode gave me the feeling that every mystery will be spoon-fed to the audience (because that's what happened). After two episodes, I still don't have a reason to continue watching.

Mahou Sensou (dropped)

Magical lolis with guns... ok only one of them. The first episode seems to be an introduction to how (some) of the characters got their magic. It was a decent watch and I hope it doesn't turn into a lame magical-school-life anime. (now on episode 5...) What and awful show this has turned out to be. Nothing is done well except for Mui's cuteness (the only reason I'm still watching)... On second thought, nah... I'm done.

Mikakunin de Shinkoukei (dropped)

A romcom about a normal girl who's fiance from the mountains (and his annoying little sister) moves in with her family. There is only a bit of romance, and most of the characters are annoying (except the main two).

Nobunaga the Fool

The music in this series is outstanding. I dislike the mashup use of historical figures, but it seems like this will be a nice action adventure.

Nobunagun (dropped)

The opening few minutes are a masterpiece of animation. The majority of the episode looked like some low-budget watercolor. There probably isn't much here in the way of plot, but the action should be decent. While the start of the second episode is quite noisy (action, bang bang), it didn't give me any reason to care to see more.

Noragami (dropped)

The opening scene was nice quality. The rest of the episode was setup for the rest of the series... a little romantic god x half-dead-girl type thing. There just isn't anything to draw me in.

Nourin (dropped)

Cute concert at the start... the rest was awful. The 2nd episode is much better (the first was so bad I almost dropped it right there). The 3rd episode was amusing in its own way, but failed to give me a reason to want to see more.

Pupa (completed)

Why is this only 4 minutes? Why!? While short, it was quite good. The censoring of the gore is a bit annoying.

Sakura Trick (dropped)

Love the OP song. Hate the show. There was nothing in the first episode that I liked.

Space☆Dandy (dropped)

Typical garbage that I've come to expect from Bones studio. This anime is what would happen if you crossed Cowboy Bebop with Redline, and left out anything good. Animation quality is top notch, but when you open an anime with "boobies" and then fail to deliver any real comedy instead of just being stupid... well this is what happens.

Super Sonico The Animation (dropped)

It was a struggle to even finish the first episode. It wasn't cute. It wasn't funny. It wasn't even sexy. The only redeeming quality was Sonico's manager. If he was the main character, I might actually watch this.

Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta (completed)
The Pilot's Love Song

A romantic adventure has begun. They wasted no time to establish the young couple, which was about the only saving aspect of the first episode.

Wake Up, Girls! Shichinin no Idol (completed)

This pre-series 1hr movie was very nicely done. A great job building the idol group up to their debut concert at the end, which actually met my expectations.

Wake Up, Girls! (completed)

The series after the movie. My only complaint is that the fanservice seems awkward for the serious dramatic style of the show. This is my favorite anime of the season so far (1 episode in...).

Better than Idolmaster and Love Live, AKB0048 is on a different level, but this still has great potential as a musical drama.

Witch Craft Works (dropped)

Pretty dumb show. The ED is fantastic though!

Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil (dropped)

Magic is lethal here (people actually die). Decent enough action through the first episode. The next couple episodes focus more on the "legal" side of things. There is some flashy magic used, but that seems to be all the show has to offer.

Wonder Momo (dropped)

Dumb, but it's so corny that it's a little amusing.

Z/X: Ignition (dropped)

It looks like they started the series with a flash-forward. I hope it doesn't get slow. The first episode had some decent action. The second episode was mostly boring. They really did start with the best they had, and that was barely enough to keep me interested. I see this going nowhere.

Blue is good enough to watch. Red is not.

Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova

Girls (alien? A.I.?) = battleships. I generally like submarine movies, so I liked this too. Hopefully it will have some good battles and keep the corny stuff at bay (get it?).

BlazBlue: Alter Memory

Lot's of fights. Nothing too special though. (dropped)

Coppelion

The setting is a post-apocalyptic world where genetically enhanced schoolgirls search radioactive areas for survivors. The story seems to centering around the mystery of the epicenter of the disaster, which is shrouded in fog. The art and sound quality is done quite nicely, and the pacing of the show is decent.

Unforunately after a few episodes, I have realized the storytelling is quite poor and uninteresting. (dropped)

Freezing Vibration

Second season of Freezing. It's more of the same. Nothing unexpected.

Galilei Donna

The beginning was intense... then we got a mecha goldfish... It's too childish for me. (dropped)

Golden Time

Slightly amusing romantic comedy. Stalking is somehow cute when a girl does it, I guess. (dropped)

IS: Infinite Stratos 2

Second season of Infinite Stratos (finally!) Fun and cute like the first season. The action content (or lack of) is similar as well.

Kakumeiki Valvrave 2nd Season

Valvrave is back, and picks up right where it left off.

Kill la Kill

Chaos similar to Dead Leaves. Everything is way over the top and ridiculous. I hope they can keep the pace.

Kyoukai no Kanata

Typical Kyoto Animation... While the setting is somewhat interesting (basically demon hunters), it's still likely to just be pointless "school life" in the end. We'll see how far I get before I drop this like every other anime from this studio. (edit: 2 episodes, dropped, I don't care what happens next)

Kyousou Giga (TV) & Specials

The first (episode 0) is exactly the same as the 2011 ONA ( I've been waiting for two years for this series to start. =D ). The series is not as fast/chaotic as the ONA, but focuses more on telling a story in a rather creative way.

Log Horizon

Trapped in an MMORPG (SAO had a better start). Seems like it should be a decent action/adventure.

Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai (Unbreakable Machine-Doll)

Yaya is a cutie. It's pretty fun to watch and has decent action.

Miss Monochrome

I was expecting more for only being 4 minutes long. There really isn't much point in this. (dropped)

Nagi no Asukara

People living under water in a story of children's romance. The scenery is nice, but the rest... isn't. (dropped)

Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Love Comedy wo Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru (NouKome)

Mostly slice-of-life type comedy. The random choices the MC is forced to make are somewhat random and amusing, but the regular comedy is lacking.

Outbreak Company

A cute little fantasy romcom. Unfortunately, it quickly degrades into a pointless harem. (dropped)

Samurai Flamenco

A male model wants to be a hero... just aweful. (dropped)

Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai!

An idol becomes a wrestler to defend her pride as an idol... It really is that bad. (dropped)

Strike the Blood

This felt like something between Code:Breaker and Demon King Daimao. I am amused by it for some reason.

Tokyo Ravens

Magic and mecha familiars. The first few episodes were decent enough. Then it turned into "school life." (dropped)

Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta

I didn't like the first season. So I won't bother with this one. (skipped)

Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui Shimashita. (Yuushibu)

The bouncing boobs show. It was somewhat amusing for a comedy. Too bad the rest of the anime is not like the opening squence. (dropped)

My thoughts on the Summer 2013 anime (the ones I tried anyways).

Danganronpa: Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei - The Animation

"Kill and don't get caught" is the only way to win this game of "clue".

The mystery and Monobear's crazy personality make this anime worth watching. The other characters have their own quirks, but the lack of good character development leaves you not caring that one of them just got murdered.

Score: 5/10 Average

Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou
Dog & Scissors

As I would expect from Gonzo... nothing great. Kirihime might be appealing, but she isn't enough to save this series. It isn't even funny, just stupid.

Score: 1/10 Unwatchable (dropped)

Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi
The Sunday without God

Not impressed. High quality animation, but slow and boring.

Score: 2/10 No reason to watch (dropped)

Monogatari Series: Second Season

Lots more of Hitagi's verbal abuse, which is hilariously amusing. This season seems to have a bit more fanservice than before. It's more Bakemonogatari, which was fantastic.

Score: 9/10 Exceptional

Rozen Maiden (2013)

Much better pacing than the original. This version has a lot more/better drama without childishness.

Score: 4/10 Below Average

Senki Zesshou Symphogear G: In the Distance, That Day, When the Star Became Music...

Same feel as the first season, but higher quality animation and a lot more action.

Score: 6/10 Above average

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya

An almost amusing magical-girl anime that mocks the magical-girl stereotype. Unfortunately the jokes/action/cuteness isn't enough to keep me watching.

Score: 3/10 Almost watchable (dropped)

Gatchaman Crowds

Nice character designs and the soundtrack has a good beat. The CG is high quality, but the regular animation looks somewhat low quality. The show has high-positive energy, thanks to Hajime (the main character).

I like Hajime's wings:

Score: 5/10 Average

Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou
Day Break Illusion

The episodes feel really long, but the show isn't slow. The character designs are great, and there are some rather freaky elements. I can't help but like the ED.

Score: 4/10 Below Average

Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui!
No Matter How I Look At It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Unpopular!

I'm surprised how much I liked this. Lots of laughs every episode.

Score: 7/10 Really good

Choujigen Game Neptune: The Animation

The only thing this show has going for it are the goddesses' outfits ("outer-space swimsuits"). Very nice designs, but the show is awful.

Score: 2/10 No reason to watch (dropped)

Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai: Megami-hen
The World God Only Knows: Goddess-arc

Season 3 of The World God Only Knows. It's been a lot more dramatic than I was expecting.

Score: 6/10 Above average

Blood Lad

Childish.

Score: 2/10 No reason to watch (dropped)

Love Lab

It has a few funny moments. Most of the jokes weren't very good though.

Score: 2/10 No reason to watch (dropped)
