Yeah, so it might be kind of late, but I’ve wanted to do a favorite anime songs list for 2009 for a while now. I watched a lot of anime in 2009. I was still running my anime screenings at Holloman at the beginning of the year and I watched nearly every single show from the Summer and Fall seasons. So I in effect also heard a lot of anime theme songs. That brings us back to me wanting to make a list of all of my favorites. On this list opening, ending and insert theme songs are eligible. And the song must have played during the year 2009 to be on the list. So if it didn’t have an episode premiere on TV with the song or if the movie or OVA with the song wasn’t released in 2009, it won’t be on the list. I’m also limiting it to only one song per show. There are 20 songs on the list, and here they are with nice little YouTube inserts:
This turned out to be a pretty bland series, but I still like the song. It’s so damn happy! And I really like how it goes all Na-na-na-na-na-na and stuff. ^_^
A series a lot of people also thought was pretty bland, but I enjoyed it well enough and plan to buy it when I get a chance. I just love watching the poor girl trip over that rock! I can see it in my head whenever the song comes up on my MP3 player. XD
Some of my friends say they like the first opening a lot more than the second. Personally I like “masterpiece” just a little more than “PSI-missing”. But the first opening isn’t eligible for this list anyway since it didn’t play in the episodes that aired in 2009. =P
This is a little bit of a close call because the Haruhi-chan opening wasn’t played at the beginning of each episode really, but it still came out in 2009 so it still makes it on the list. It’s just such a fun, retarded song. Just all the little things in the song like Nagato’s monotone “singing” and calling out a KAMEHAMEHA. It’s just awesome. ^_^
When I was watching Episode 4 of Kanamemo and they busted into song for the first time, I just kind of laughed. When it happened the second time I was like, what the hell?? Then when it kept happening I just laughed my ass off! Random musical episode in an anime. Pretty awesome. And I love the final song they sang. Great stuff.
I love the Higurashi theme songs. The opening theme to the first season was cool as hell. The one for Higurashi Kai was even better, in my opinion. The songs from the live action movie were the only really good things about that piece of crap (okay, it wasn’t really that bad, but it was pretty bad). So I was really looking forward to the opening for Rei. But to be honest I was a little disappointed the first time I heard it. It really didn’t live up to my expectations. But over time the song really grew on me. It’s still not anywhere near as awesome as Naraku no Hana, but it’s still a pretty cool song.
It’s Oasis! This is probably the best song Oasis has ever made, in my opinion. The thing I always remember about this song is that my friend Dan had never heard of Oasis until he watched Eden of the East. He’s a year older than me. He should know these guys. They were pretty big in the 1990’s. Anyway, it sucks that our home video release could only get the song on the first episode, but at least we got it at all.
Sorry for the lame non-video for this one, but this is the ending theme from a movie. It played over a black-screen credit roll in the anime. It’s a really nice song. I really like the artist. I should really hunt down more of their music.
Ahhh, Bleach. Such a mainstream series with so many flaws, but I still haven’t given up on you. You have some pretty good songs from time to time, too. Sadly this is the last Bleach song to come out recently that I’ve really liked a lot (enough to add to my anime song playlist on my MP3 player). Really fun song.
Such a cool song for such a surprisingly cool anime (robots playing basketball!!). Not much else to say about it.
Edit: The original video I had of the ending animation got taken off of YouTube and I wasn't able to find a replacement so I ended up just putting the music video here.
Kind of weird that a series about girls making a band doesn’t have more songs in it. Unless I don’t remember correctly, I think the first season only had the opening, ending, and one insert song (Fuwa Fuwa Time). At least the second season did better, although it was twice as long. Anyway, back on track, “Don’t say lazy” is a very cool song with very cool animation to go with it. Although I actually like the second season’s “NO, Thank You!” even more. That will be a big contender for a 2010 list if I decide to make one. ^_^
Oh yes, the first time I heard this song it was almost overwhelmingly epic. I was glad to know that the new series in the When They Cry franchise carried on Higurashi’s tradition for having awesome opening songs. The ending actually wasn’t too bad either!
Remember the password! Apple Picking Beam! I love Zetsubou Sensei opening songs. Some of the endings aren’t bad either. And such crazy animation. I really hope Media Blasters get their act together and finally release the anime in the US.
Such a touching song. I’m almost starting to tear up just thinking about it. It helped me cry so much at the end of so many episodes of FMA Brotherhood.
New Haruhi! This song is so much better than the opening and ending themes for the 2006 episodes. It’s right on par with God Knows and Lost My Music. It was also nice that Haruhi’s character CD this time around was also a vast improvement over her old one.
My favorite song from my number three anime series and now my favorite anime Christmas song of all time. I love Holy Night so much along with the episode it came from. I’ve cried so much while watching this one. It’s just great. Oh, and also an honorable mention to “Orange”, my favorite of the regular opening and ending themes in the series.
And here’s my number one! Such a great song! From the same people who were behind LOVE & ROLL. I really need to look up some more of supercell’s music. But yeah, such a great song and really cool stylish animation, too.
And that’s it! Hope you enjoyed it. It was a fun list to make. I actually had to readjust the list twice because I forgot about Shoujo S from Bleach and forgot that Soul Eater ran into 2009 at the end. =P
Anyway, that’s all for now. Laters!
Edit 1: (22 Oct 2010) Sacred Blacksmith video replaced with new copy of the ending because YouTube killed the old one. Basquash video replaced with the artist's (Yu Yamada) music video for the song because that video was killed and I couldn't find another copy of it. Don't worry, it's mostly just sillouettes playing basketball anyway. No big loss. Don't know if I'll keep replacing killed videos or not. YouTube is kind of gay. XP
Edit 2: (1 Nov 2010) FMA's "Let it out" video has been replaced because of killed video. This one's lower quality but hopefully it will stay up. But it probably won't....
Edit 3: (2 Nov 2010) "Let it out" video has been killed and replaced again. =P
Edit 4: (19 Nov 2010) Okay, new video killed: "only my railgun" has been replaced with a new YouTube video. Yeah, again, YouTube is pretty gay.
Edit 5: (24 Nov 2010) No video kills this time. Just added spoiler tag because I'm tired of scrolling through this long ass post in my blog. =P
Edit 6: (7 Dec 2010) "Shoujo S" got killed this time. A little surprised it took this long for that to happen. Anyway, replaced with a new video.
Edit 7: (14 Dec 2010) "Shoujo S" got killed again. That was fast. Well, replaced for now. Might eventually replace it with the actual music video like I did with "free", although I really like this opening animation so that would kind of suck. We'll see.
Edit 8: (26 Dec 2010) I never expected "Ringo Mogire Beam" to get killed. But I guess it didn't. It said the video was removed by the user who uploaded it. That's kind of lame. Anyway, it's replaced now, and now it has English subtitles!! ^_^
