Anime Relations: Mirai Nikki

Mirai Nikki/Future Diary has to be THE most over-rated manga on MAL. The writing is so bad that it's laughable it has the average it does and reviews only consisting of 9-10/10 scores. It being regarded so highly highlights why I only trust my own eyes - others are too blinded by their own stupidity to be useful.

The first volume was great. Totally over the top, with a psycho terrorist girl appearing out of nowhere and blowing up a school, but the plot was twisty enough to keep me hooked, and Gasai's psychotic yet cute love for the lead toyed with my inner romantic. And even the next few volumes were totally absorbing... in spite of them involving a rape cult where a blind hero of justice/hearing diary person *SOMEHOW* used hypnotism (...dude, he was blind!) on the entire cult. But then it all went to hell.

It started with the 'dog breeder diary' guy. First of all, he was happy to give his lifeline to his previously clueless daughter, who believed everything and even got a friend in on the silliness. But that wasn't the main problem. No, the main problem was that he controlled on army of dogs; having the ability to issue phone commands to them and the dogs obeying perfectly. And that's ignoring the fact the diary was about dogs - the author clearly REALLY struggling to come up with new tool ideas.

Worse was still yet to come, though. Following some nice Gasaixlead development, Gasai started shooting people inside a police station, after stealing a gun. The lead got in on the act, too - shooting an officer in the chest. The two then got involved in some light hospital terrorism. And, after everything had ended, the lead returned to his normal life; simply commenting that he and Gasai had been given a good talking to for their actions, and that a random new police officer character had explained everything to his workmates. Seriously, what the fuck!?

Next up in what had became on obvious attempt at trolling, six days after being released, it was revealed that a warrant was out for the arrest of Gasai, following her killing people during the hospital terrorism. At this stage I was beyond caring why she hadn't been arrested earlier, or why the lead hadn't been made aware before going on a trip with his new love. Naturally, everything got even more terrible from that point onwards; the lead's 'friends' from the dog breeder episode suddenly deciding to go search for their missing friend, after he'd gone missing for a week - the new police officer character being happy to give police info to the kids and get them to help. (Also, when the lead came back, his mom was so understanding she was willing to let her 14-year-old son tell her where he'd been for a week when he was ready, and she also said she didn't care about there having previously been a nationwide police hunt for him, for reasons unknown.)

At this point, Gasai went from slightly crazy but very hot, in a crazy bitch kind of way, to losing her marbles completely. It seemed like one of the most weird romances ever was heading towards goodness... but, instead, any chance of a decent relationship forming between the main two is now all but ruined.

Where the story's at right now, a new diary holder called 'Mother' has been introduced, and she has the ability to create new sub-diary users. I internally facepalmed when one badly designed new character revealed his diary was a cross-counter/boxing one - who the fuck looks at diary when fighting when they're trained and fighting kids?

Also, the 'Mother' character's design all but proves the author has lost it/is high 24/7:

Seriously, the story is the kind where a little girl on the run escapes to an abandoned hospital and, without explanation, has a hi-tech surveillance system set-up. Not good, to put it nicely!

I'm only going to continue reading it for the following reasons:

1: I own six volumes, and the seventh just came out.
2: Gasai's stalkerish, psychotic expressions of love make my penis hard.
3: It's unintentionally hilarious.

It's the best 5/10 ever - that much I will say. You won't find a more entertaining mess than Future Diary, and Gasai alternating between attempting to kill people with an axe and blushing over love forces me to keep reading. I'm going to keep buying it, purely because of the entertainment factor.

The first volume is, as I mentioned, pretty good. And I was on the verge of 9/10ing it during volumes 3-4... until the story got too awful for me to express with words. It'd be well worth checking out the first few volumes of, if nothing else.

Another series you should look out for is Hanako - another Tokyopop title, created by the same mangaka. The episodic stories are good and, unlike Future Diary, I don't *think* it has the time, with only two volumes remaining, to get the 5/10 treatment.

I'm suddenly overcome with an urge to read this trainwreck. Job done?
