Anime Relations: Sonic X, Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!
50.Takeru Shirogane (Muv-Luv)

Let's be honest. Takeru was not all that likable in Muv-Luv Extra.

He was pretty much the definitive wussy lame protagonist that gets girls to like him somehow yet is super oblivious to their feelings for some reason.

49.Yumi Fukuzawa (Maria-sama ga Miteru)

Yumi has some of the better character development I've seen in a female protagonist.

She starts off as a typical clumsy shy girl and with a lack of confidence. Through the process of 4 seasons she was slowly able to mature through the hardships she goes through, being Sachiko's seour and all her friendships.

She did get involved with a lot of the silly melodrama that the series had but usually she was one of the people who was ready to get things back to where they needed to be but better.

Seeing the contrast of her barely being relatively immature and not confident with her relationship with Sachiko to her really mature handling with her relationship with
in S3 and S4 was really cool and I hope that and S5 comes soon to see if she further develops even more.

48.Kanade Tachibana/Angel/Tenshi (Angel Beats!)

OT seems to have a rather overall mixed reception concerning Angel Beats but I think its top tier KEY stuff if not their outright best series.

I thought the overall cast of Angel Beats was really good and entertaining but Kanade's the flagship character for a reason.

Her actual personality isn't really that special, kind of a typical "emotionless"/kuudere though definitely more likable than the average and the whole mystery behind who she was and finding it out was definitely the best part regarding her.

To her eventually
to the REAL big spoiler with the whole
and of course her really cool Sonic Blade powers.. she was overall of the things that made Angel Beats a really enjoyable experience for me.

47.Yuzuru Otonashi (Angel Beats!)

I've actually enjoyed most of the KEY protagonists so far (only exceptions being Riki from Little Busters who was super plain/boring but I've only seen the first anime so maybe he'll get more interesting in Refrain and the Planetarian protagonist who I remember almost nothing about).

However, Otonashi is definitely my favorite of the bunch. He did start kind of as a typical straight man for the first few episodes but eventually well… there’s a reason why some people call him BROtonashi.

When he starts the whole
and
he becomes more interesting to me.

Just seeing him become proactive in trying to move the “plot” (what little of it was in Angel Beats) was really cool and of course his real highlight was his previous life where he

The Another Epilogue episode was a really neat twist compared to other KEY series where <spoiler>the main character doesn’t get a miraculous reunion/revival scene and instead has to be the guy to bro up and help all the people go to the true afterlife. I just wish it were a 20 minute length episode just to see more of what happens to him eventually.

46.Yuri Nakamura (Angel Beats!)

Fear not Angel Beats haters, this’ll be the last AB entry on the list.

If we just go off the first few episodes Yuri was easily my favorite character from Angel Beats. She was a cool leader that had a bunch of funny moments and cool plans. I also thought her past was the most interesting in terms of relating it to her current personality (Yui comes close but she was hurt by being kinda annoying at first.)

When the shift of “main female character” slowly shifted from Yuri to Kanade, Yuri in turn got less screentime. She still had a bunch of cool/funny moments in particular

Overall Yuri gets the slight edge over the other two mains due to her personality being better, role as “older sister”/leader hybrid and having cooler/funnier/more badass moments despite her role lessening as the series went on.

45.Konata Izumi (Lucky Star)

Konata is what every nerd should strive to be: proud of what you like but not being overly obnoxious about it.

Anyway, Konata was pretty much the stand-out character to me in Lucky Star. As said she's proud of her nerdy interests and just has lots of fun chillin with her friends, trolling Kagami and just being silly in a nerdy/snarky a lot of the time.

Lucky Star obviously isn't a deep series so it's hard to make too long of a write-up but just seeing Konata enjoy what she does and her being pretty funny or at least entertaining most of the time made Lucky Star an enjoyable experience. The series probably would have been average or boring if she didn't exist.

44.Kyouko Sakura (Madoka Magica)

Before I actually start Kyouko's write-up, who the heck started the whole "Puella Magi" thing? In the series it's pretty obviously said as "Mahou Shoujo".

Anywayz, I actually ended up liking all the Madoka Magica mains which is pretty cool since usually most series there's usually at least one main/recurring character who is annoying/boring.

PIcking a fav was kinda hard but overall I went with Kyouko barely over Homura and Mami.

Even when she was antagonistic in her first appearance she was still great since her fighting style was really cool.

I actually thought her past was fairly interesting as someone who's religious.

Then of course, there's the whole SayakaxKyouko thing that everyone likes. I don't really believe in romance/sexual tension between them but it was cool to see Kyouko develop due to Sayaka's influence.

43.Kamina (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)

For some reason Kamina's (maybe it's just on OT) reception has becoming more mixed or maybe the people who loved him just quieted down.

While he was never like a top tier character for me, he was definitely one of the highlight characters when I first getting into non-classic Toonami/Pokemon/kids anime.

Whenever Kamina's on screen you know something really crazy, really badass or really hilarious moment is going to happen. I guess some people can see him as obnoxious but I consider his archetype (which doesn't really seem that common anyway) really well executed and not really annoying at all.

He was the main driving force of awesomeness, hilarity and of course inspiration for the team in Gurren Lagann and that's how he earns a place on this list.

42.Haruko Kamio (Air)

If Angel Beats! is liked in most places but not so liked on GameFAQs, Air is a series with mixed reception pretty much everywhere I go. Now that I think about it there are only a handful of people I know that like Air.

I guess it's kinda understandable, while I did like the show I honestly don't remember what the non-Misuzu main females were like at all and I didn't really like the "past" arc.

However, I thought Haruko was easily the most memorable character in the series. It's not very often when an adult character in a series full of teens gets the most character development.

41.Fate Testarossa (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha)

Fate is most people’s favorite Nanoha character and it’s not surprising to see why.

She was definitely the stand out character in the first series once she appears despite being the “antagonist”. Learning about her past was really sad and seeing why she was so antagonistic to Nanoha and loyal to Precia at first made sense.

While Nanoha’s beams are always entertaining, I think Fate’s overall fighting style is cooler. Her scythe-related abilites and being able to go faster at will (but lose defense) makes really good fights in the series.

40.Nanoha Takamahi (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha)

While Nanoha has a slightly inferior fighting style and obviously no/little DEEP backstory I consider her the slightly better character than Fate due to her overall personality and goals.

For some reason even though she's in grade school she's desperately looking for a purpose in life so of course she becomes a magical girl.

I think it's cool that unlike many magical girls her main power is shooting gigantic ass beams. I've seen that comparisons to her as the original RX-78-2 Gundam as a magical girl and while silly it's kinda true in a sense. Watching her throw out a Divine Buster or Starlight Breaker is always great to watch.

While she is the typical nice friendly naive-ish girl it is pretty amusing to see her have a bit more of a "violent" side than most female magical girl leads (though of course I think people overexaggerate that). Seeing that mix of personality traits was cool to see for a magical girl main character.

I also thought it was cool to see how in StrikerS how instead of most magical girls wanting to go back to a "normal" life when they're done with the plot she goes on to become of the heads of a magic academy.<spoiler> Becoming a cool adoptive mom was pretty sweet as well, led to her having some great badass moments.

39.Tenzen Yakushiji (Basilisk)

For some reason I don't really get into loving (or even liking) most anime villains.. or even villains in general.

However, Tenzen was really one of those love to hate kind of villains while also being pretty badass.

38.Tsukasa Ayatsuji (Amagami SS)

Amagami's one of those series that's honestly kinda generic in the way things play out but the omnibus format of the show plus the overall quality of the heroines and the MC was surprisingly good.

Tsukasa's my favorite character due to how different her "route" was compared to the other heroines in the series and heck even other romance anime/VNs.

Before Junichi 'formally' meets her he sees as her as the "perfect" pleasant hard working class rep image she gives off.

37.Aika S. Granzchesta (ARIA)

Aika may be the "weak link" compared to the rest of the main trio in ARIA but I still like her a lot as a character.

Aria, despite being one of those slice of life shows where "nothing happens" the main characters get a good amount of character development and I personally think Aika gets the most beneficial development.

She was a "straight man" compared to the main trio since the beginning but her crankiness, obsession with Alicia and catchphrase was mildly annoying sometimes.

Around the middle of Natural/manga is when I started to really like her character.

I can't believe I had to mark spoilers for a slice of life series.

35+36.Kyou and Asu Yamada (Binbou Shimai Monogatari)

Don't worry this'll probably be the only entry where I will "cheat" but individually while both characters are solid by themselves I think it's their interaction and relationship with each other that really makes them great characters.

Binbou Shimai Monongatari translates to "Poor Sisters' Story" which is what the series basically is.. a slice of life where a pair of sisters get along.

Despite the fact that they are poor it's a really uplifiting series in general because of the sisters' reaction. Kyou is the older sister who does a job of delivering newspapers and earning the (very) little money while Asu is the little sister that does all the shopping, cooking and cleaning.

While they're in a bad situation I think the way they cope it with and rely on each other very much is really sweet. They do have a few bad moments together but they always get back to getting on good terms right away.

34.Revy (Black Lagoon)

Female badasses are always cool to see but Revy goes way beyond the quality of most female badasses I've seen.

Revy is great starting the first few episodes wielding her GUNZ and shooting the **** out of everything and having a blast doing so. There are lots of cool guys and girls in the series and she still easily outdoes all of them, that's just how great her fighting style and fighting scenes are to me.

Interestingly, Revy actually as a decent amount of character development without changing her character too much. It mostly has to do with Rock but it's cool to see the subtle differences between the beginning of S1 and Roberta's Blood Trail.

33.Noriko Nijou (Maria-sama ga Miteru)

Maria-sama ga Miteru had a decent cast and while Yumi was a good enough character to barely breach the top 50 I thought Noriko was easily my favorite.

Through her random fascination with Buddhism she had and "accidentally" (seriously how did that happen again) going to a Catholic girls school she became soeurs (or for some people a practically lesbian/yuri couple) with Shimako who's pretty much the pretty much the perfect fit for her.

Speaking of which the Noriko and Shimako pair is probably my favorite soeur combination in the series. The episode (or series of episodes) when they officially become soeurs was probably my favorite moment in the whole series. The way Noriko was able to be a big support to Shimako in her time of need was quite heartwarming.

Sadly Noriko kinda slowly started to lose importance as the series went after this. However, I liked how despite being a rather quiet person compared to the rest she was able to be a big help to all the problems and melodrama the members of the student body faces. In particular, she was pretty helpful with the problems Yumi and <spoiler>Touko </spoiler>had to go through.

And of course she still had her great moments with Shimako every so once a while.

32.Wakana Sakai (Tari Tari)

Before I begin, I'd like to say I wish more slice of life shows were more like Tari Tari. It had this sense of.. (kinda) realism lance compared to others. It had a really nice balance of plain slice of life, drama, comedy and development for almost every character. It still had its kinda cheesy last episode but I'd still take that over dumb generic harem comedy hjijinx. Not that comedy slice of lifes are bad it'd just be nice to have SoL's like this more often.

Anyway, as said, the cast all has good development but I thought Wakana was easily my favorite out of everyone.

I feel like.. her development o<spoiler>f going from someone who's pretty grouchy and unsociable to being kinda sociable and happy through the power of FRIENDSHIP and other things is something done before in a SoL series but I really liked the way it was executed.

I feel like truly getting over a parents' death and going on with life is something that doesn't often, or at least in the kinda realistic but still heartwarming moment.

I think it was cool to see her go from the grouchiest character to arguably the nicest character of the 5.

And of course who can't forget this amazing scene
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3ijKB0U6zc&noredirect=1

31.Hanako Ikezawa (Katawa Shoujo)

Hanako may not be favorite girl in the Katawa (you'll see eventually) but I thought she had the best overall route.

Personality-wise Hanako isn't particularly original, kinda typical overly shy girl. However I thought thought the way her route was handled was really good.

She still gets the expected development of getting over her shyness and starting a relationship with Hisao and all which was good but the most interesting part was:

30.Tomoko Fujinami (Canvas 2)

For the most part Canvas 2 was an incredibly mediocre visual novel. Most of the characters pretty annoying/boring even if the actual routes were actually "alright".

That said, I thought Tomoko was easily the best character and had the best route.

After you first meet her she does seem she would be the typical bratty violent tsundere girl. And while she is kinda tsundere, the way its' executed is almost like that part of her personality was a facade.

For one, she's a lot more honest with her feelings than most and really easy to troll/get distracted so she does get amusing moments despite getting grouchy.

<spoiler>My favorite part of her route and of the whole VN was her eventual character development and the whole hospitalization thing. The way it ended it was kinda cheesy (MARRIAGE vows and of course SEX SCENES) but the way she got friends and support and all that stuff was just really nice and made an otherwise bad/mediocre VN kinda memorable in a good way.

29.Shion Sonozaki (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)

Most of the Higurashi cast was pretty good but Shion's always been my favorite.

She was always really cool or funny or interesting in some way in every arc she was in. I'm kinda sad she barely got any screentime in some arcs like 4 or 6 or none at all like in 1.

Personality-wise she's almost the polar opposite of Mion being rather flirty and tease compared to her "tomboy" sister. She usually has some funny scenes with Keiichi, Kasai or the main group.

Of course arc 5/Meakashi is where she really started to shine. I liked the backstory that was given to her and I even went out of order in reading the VNs to see what parts of her backstory was taken out of the anime (I've only read 1, a little of 2 and probably a bit over half of 5).

28.Tsubaki Miwa (G-senjou no Maou)

Oh man if people haven't complained about my list yet I'm expecting a whole bunch of new ones now.

I like but not love G-sen but for different reasons than most. I actually thought the side routes (besides Kanon's) were about almost as good Chapter 5 and Chapter 1 was pretty mediocre.

A few other G-sen characters might make my top 100 (that would be a bit much for me) but Tsubaki is the only one that's top 50 worthy to me.

I don't really like using this word but I thought it was cool how she was somewhat of a "deconstruction" of the super nice doormat girl. She does start off as the typical archetype until

27.Natsumi HInata (Sharin no Kuni)

Interestingly for the longest time while reading Sharin I didn't really like Natsumi at all since the whole overly shy thing especially around Kenichi got rather annoying.

However finding out how she got that way actually made me start to feel for her.

26.Sumika Kagami (Muv-Luv)

While Takeru was definitely quite interesting to see during the Muv-Luv series Sumika was my favorite character since the beginning.

Though admittedly from Extra that wasn't really saying much since she had her moments of dumb humor/tsundere hitting. Even so, she did have her moments of amusing silliness and was the 'least offensive' of the cast in Extra.

25.Yu Narukami (Persona 4 the Animation)

In all honesty, he probably SHOULDN'T count since his actual first appearance was in a game. However, not only did he get his real "canon" name here but he went from being a typical boring silent protag to an amazing character. I don't think I've seen such a jump in quality in an adaptation before.

While Persona 4 the Animation is definitley better than most game adaptation out there I was still disappointed by the way it handled some things (like the pacing, humor and a few other things). However one of the things that the Animation did better by far was Yu.

The way he was presented was a great representation of the personality the game developers were probably trying to envision him as. He's quiet but eventually becomes a bro with lots of swag. His deadpan humor was amazing and added a lot to a bunch of random scenes through the story.

The way he helped with Social Links and stuff was cool and while he didn't have too much development compared to the other mains he still showed a somewhat decent amount.

He probably took too much screentime as far as fights went but he was still badass anyway. Persona 4 Arena kinda made him not as interesting and kinda boring but I didn't really take the story of that game too seriously anyway.

24.Kokoro Fushikawa (Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!)

I wasn't really fond of Class 2-S in general with the exception of Hideo, Jun kinda and Kokoro. She at one point was probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite character in the whole visual novel.

Out of all the characters in 2-S she had the most elite condescending attitude and it was just hilarious to watch especially most of her dialogue consists of that attitude.

A bunch of the time when she fights she ends up kind of making a fool out of herself but she has a bunch of cool moments as well to make up for it.

I'm somewhat excited to see her route in S but apparently half of it are H-scenes which makes me not as excited but it should still have some good moments.

23.Haruka Higuchi (Never7)

The Infinity trilogy is an interesting case for me. Ever17 and Remember11 are great VNs but while I like their casts there's no one character I really love. Never7 is somewhere between alright and decent as a VN (it helps I read it last, it was the first of the trilogy and had story stuff that was done better in E17, R11 or even other VNs). There are a few characters I kinda like but my favorite character Haruka in Never7 is easily my favoite in the whole trilogy.

You know how a bunch of Kuuderes are usually flat out emotionless (aka usually boring)? Haruka takes that type of kuudere and actually makes it pretty interesting and somewhat realistic.

She does have the whole being kind of deadpan thing and is more quiet than the rest of the cast. However she actually has a good reason for being that way and she actually curious of learning of things about emotions and stuff.

22.Emi Ibarazaki (Katawa Shoujo)

As I said earlier while Hanako had my favorite route she wasn't quite my favorite Katawa character. That honor goes to Emi.

While the way most of the main characters handle their disabilities is inspiring in a way, I personally thought Emi was the most inspiring of them all. While many just take their disabilities in stride, Emi makes it a point that she doesn't give a **** that her disability would normally prevent her from doing the hobby she really loves: running.

Just the beginning moments of her route when she and Hisao go running together are really good. There were some amusing things about her route including: http://fireden.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Dueling-Network-General58.jpeg

The serious part of her route were pretty interesting as well.

The fact that her personality archetype is one I tend to like a lot (happy/cheery/optmistic/friendly) probably helps why she was my favorite from the VN as well.

21.Chris(tiane) Fredreich (Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!)

Chris was great from the moment she appeared, literally riding a horse to school how amazing is that.

The Kazama Family aren't particularly deep characters but almost all of them are good characters and I really like what each brings to the table.

Chris is honorable and honest at the cost of being naive and Yamato easily tricking her or pissing her off. Her fencing style of fighting is cool (though most people in the series who can fight have cool fights).

I just wish her route wasn't as bad as it was in the last 1/3 but I can't fault Chris herself too much about it.

And then of course Miss Kishido is my favorite cameo/shout-out in the whole VN alongside being a very funny moment.

20.Touko Kirihara (Cross+Channel)

Another controversial choice probably. Cross Channel's cast was good because of how "imperfect" they are but I thought Touko was easily the most interesting of them all.

She was a rather interesting take on the tsundere archetype. At first she does have show the typical elements of a tsundere including the hitting and crankiness and stuff.

19.Yamato Naoe (Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!)

There aren't many visual novel lead characters I care about but Yamato is definitely one of the best to me.

I consider him a nicer version of Lelouch or Light Yagami. He still take part in great battle of wits stuff but doesn't have a super big goal the whole time nor is he particularly malicious and not as "manipulative" overall.

That said Yamato's expertise is a great contrast to all the girls who are just really cool at fighting. It makes him useful without having to overtake the girls in badassery.

The plans he makes for the many battles in MajiKoi are all great and have some kind of ridiculous part to it that makes it all the better.

While his overall personality doesn't stick out as much as the rest of the crew, his role in the story is still great and the way he gets the girls in routes makes it so he actually "deserved" these, compared to many loser guys who get extremely lucky somehow.

18.Yukie Mayuzumi (Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!)

Yukie's personality is not very original but MajiKoi proves for many characters you don't need originality to have a great character just one that's well executed and Yukie's pretty damn executed well in my mind.

She has lots of cliche things about her including being shy, submissive, good at cooking, wanting to have friends and humongous ass boobs to "complement" her shy personality. The only somewhat original things about her is that she has mildly perverted thoughts and is probably in the top 3-5 strongest characters in whole VN.

Despite her cliches, Yukie is a very enjoyable character. Most shy girls in anime get annoying because of bad they are at expressing themselves but the way it's done in MajiKoi ends up being really funny especially when she has to use something to express her "real thoughts".

She has a goal of making 100 FRIENDS and while I don't think she'll make that number seeing her eventually join the Super Kazama Family Bros was really heartwarming. Her getting a few new good friends in her own route was nice as well.

17.Wanko/Kazuko Kawakami (Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!)

Like Yukie, Wanko's personality is not particularly original: she has the ditzy and overly energetic personality. However unlike more than half of these characters she is almost never annoying. In fact just like most jokes made in the VN she's actually pretty funny though it definitley helps she's not afraid of being the butt end of some silly jokes the group likes to tease with her with (as opposed to other energetic who love to make the protagonist or someone's life miserable for dumb humor value).

The main thing that sticks out about her besides being funny is her being one of the few characters in the main cast to actually have some kind of goal in life. Due to being raised in the Kawakami Temple she really wants to be an assistant master and it's cool to see it brought up and taken seriously in her route.

16.Aeka Shiraki (Yume Miru Kusuri)

Right off the bat, Aeka's route in YMK starts off a a really serious theme: bullying.

It was pretty ridiculous how much she was getting bullied for now reason yet the way it was executed it felt kinda realistic. Even if a lot of scenes were quinch-worthy it was still really interesting to see what would happen next.

15.Sachi Mitsuhiro (Sharin no Kuni)

Sachi started off as a pretty fun energetic character and had some pretty funny moments in Chapter 1 and a little of Chapter 2.

However, her character development in Chapter 2 was the one most unique ways of good development I've seen.

14.Gen-san/Tadakatsu Minamoto (Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!)

It's amazing how great MajiKoi's cast is, an almost equal amount of side characters get on a top 50 with some of the main characters.

Tsundere Males seem a bit harder to find in anime than females but Gen-san pulled it off gloriously.

It's weird since he really is not that different from most tsundere. He's grumpy and when he does nice things he tells people to "not get the wrong idea".

But for some reason, the way it's executed with Gen-san it's actually really hilarious most of the time and Gen-san is super bro despite not being in the Kazama Family.

If you're tired of the way female tsundere jokes are being overdone in anime, look no further than Gen-san. He is the prime example of how to do a tsundere correctly in terms of humor while still being a bro/badass. If you are one of those tsundere lovers you should like Gen-san a lot anyway unless you specifically like them being tsundere females.

13.Kenichi Morita (Sharin no Kuni)

Kenichi is my favorite visual novel protagonist and I honestly wish more VN protagonists could be like him.

From the beginning he's really funny saying lots of random ass things that don't always make sense but still crack me up anyway.

Kenichi has the goal of rehabilitating these TEENAGE MOE CRIMINAL FEMALES and he does a pretty damn good job at it.

He is not above breaking the law to make up things to assist them in the process for better or worse but it usually works out anyway.

The various things he does to help out the main 3 females are really cool even if he doesn't necessary always do badass like beating people up. And he does all these things while keeping his silly sense of humor that doesn't get old throughout the VN.

Definite a balanced and very well done protagonist who really knows how to get the job done.

12.Youhei Sunohara (Clannad)

One of the best mostly pure comedy characters ever in my opinion.

Normally one character receiving the butt end of the majority of the bullying jokes for no reason usually annoys me but the way it's done with Sunohara is almost always hilarious.

Unlike other characters he does so many hilariously dumb things that a lot of the time he's pretty much begging for Tomoya or someone else to do something to him.

Amazing jokes include getting kicked around like a soccer ball, confusing a bishounen-y guy to be a girl and hearing his favorite music being recorded over with something completely different (something that's different every time in the visual novel.

It's one thing that these things happens to him but what really makes the jokes are his reactions to it.

^Many times his face in the VN becomes this and I either at least smile or laugh out loud when he makes that face, yells like a loser or screams like a little girl.

His few actual bro moments are actually pretty decent too, making him one of the best bro characters ever as well.

11.Toua Tokuchi (One Outs)

Unlike other "battle of wits" protagonists like Lelouch and Light, Toua is near-perfect in judging how to throw the other person off and very very rarely makes dumb judgments (if ever). On paper, it sounds like this make a boring series but I'd say it's quite the opposite, especially with the way it's handled.

The idea behind the main series is that the Owner of the baseball team Toua is in is VERY corrupt and wants to screw over Toua's paycheck.

Of course the Owner is even worse than Toua cheating the system by attempting to have Toua lose money by giving him these ridiculous obstacles in game that sometimes go against making the team do well.

Even when the Owner finds the most ridiculous ways of screwing Toua over, Toua almost always finds a way to find a way around due to his incredible smarts and judgment in human psychology.

The way he throws his pitches, judging how a batter will attempt to hit by their personality, his off-the-wall strategies when he's a baseman or batter and his tendency to "cheat" make him a really fun protagonist to watch in the midst of how anyone else in his situation would probably be in 10 billion dollar debt with the Owner now.
