MY OPINION:
This is probably one of the better animes I have seen so far. The animation was good, the BGM was good, the story was good, the VA was good. This anime is one of my personal favorites and hope an OVA is produced soon. I pretty much think everything was well done with this anime. It could have gone on into another few episodes, or even went into more detail about the characters, but they did a good job into letting you get to know some of the key characters with greater detail. They do a very good job in letting you immerse yourself in the story, and if an unlucky fellow perishes, you might actually feel sorry. All throughout the anime, it makes you keep guessing if they right are or wrong, or who will die next. Or who could it be that let the curse keep going, or if they will ever reach a solution.
PLOT:
Story starts off with a boy named Koichi sakakibara waking up in the hospital after having his lung collapse. He finds he is being visited by three classmates from the school he will be attending once he is discharged from the hospital. They all welcome him to Yomiyama, and hope to see him in thier class soon. Soon after they leave, he meets with another girl named Mei Misaki, who takes the elevator along with him and walks off to the morgue with a doll in hand. And doesn't see her again until a few days later. That's when strange things begin to happen. He notices he is the only person that can apparently see her and talk to her, while everyone around is unaware of her existence. Thing is, people are doing it on purpose. Once people start dying, people begin to ignore him as well and pretend he doesn't exist. The reason for this he finds out later is because a curse has been active for 26 years in the class he has been attending. Once the curse begins, 1 student or a family member of a student dies per month. But once they realize the countermeasure they had set down to have the curse not work for the year is ineffective, they begin taking drastic measures, and people begin to get more and more desperate since every one is dying.
Design - 8/10
The designers did a fantastic job with character design and setting. The doll studio looked like a place you really wouldn't want to go alone, the hospital actually looked like a place where death is a common thing. Best of all though, is the shrine at the end of the series, not because of how good it looks, but how well the animators were able to use it for thier finale.
Animation - 9/10
Probably the highlight of the series is not only its creepy setting and suspense filled plot, but also the nasty deaths the classmates go through. I believe there are over 15+ deaths throughout the short series, almost each of them die in an unique way, and also the way the animators were able to show how physically terrified our classmates are when they are on the brink of death or watched one of thier classmates fall victim to the curse is fantastic.
Audio - 7/10
The audio was nothing special in the anime. The OP Intro OST was probably one of the best I've heard. The audio during a "death scene" is top notch and made me jump a few times because they decided to boost up the audio in these certain scenes. I didn't listen to the Outro of the anime, so I wouldn't be able to comment on that. Also, since there is quite a large amount of death, blood and gore, I found it annoying hearing the "bloodsplatter" Sound effect all throughout the series. You may wonder "why would you complain about that?", well lets just say High school of the dead abuses the hell out of it, although it is understandable. And sometimes it makes the death seem overexaggerated. Like a simple blow to the head, and on impact you hear the effect, they make it sound like the entire body just exploded to a million different pieces. Even though it's just a mop stick to the head. (yes a mop stick, watch the last two episodes and you will know what I mean)
Originality 10/10 ( only testing this category, need feedback on this certain section)
I have never heard of a story like this before in movies, t.v shows or even books. The way the plot was layed out, detailed, and executed made it for an enjoyable anime to watch. Although some can say they can compare it to Final destination, those sort of films are only for cheap horrors with no plot(decent atleast) what so ever. This series pretty much delivers when it comes to the horror/mystery genre of anime.
Execution - 9/10 ( same situation as the Originality category, need feedback)
They were able to deliver an enjoyable anime within 12 episodes, without needing the help from boring fillers or redundant actions or unneeded information. This anime is a great pick for those that are into horror or mystery. It puts you on the edge of your seat as you constatnly wonder why this calamity is taking place in Class 3, killing off students left and right. And wonder who could it be that is causing this. This anime is best to watch night, alone with the lights off. And a much bigger screen, I was stuck watching it on my iPod. Even with that, I found Another to be one of the best recent animes I have seen in a while.
