Look, it's no secret that anime fans have shit taste. I think we can all agree on this. What you might not be aware of is just HOW shit we are talking about here. Well, dear readers, wallow in your ignorance no longer, for I have performed exhaustive research on the MAL Top 1000 list just to bring you the searing, front-page headlines from the trenches of the Internet apocalypse. Listed below are pairs of various entries in the Top 1000, with their rank based on user ratings relative to each other. The power of NUMBERS and MATH and COLD, HARD SCIENCE is here at your aid, converting into QUANTIFIABLE TERMS just how garbage the taste of the average anime fan is. Let's go from the top down:

Ano Hana > Princess Mononoke and literally every Hayao Miyazaki movie with the exception of Spirited Away

Code Geass > Cowboy Bebop

Fate/Zero > Grave of the Fireflies

Angel Beats > Samurai Champloo

Toradora! > Welcome to the NHK!

The original Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell do not appear anywhere in the top 100. Their (IMO watered-down) Noughties spinoffs, however, do. AKIRA is also absent from the top 100.

Darker Than Black > Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (no fuck you, Darker Than Black was stupid and you need to stop defending it just because it looks good next to virtually anything else in the last 5 years)

Inuyasha: The Final Act > Kaiji

Kaicho wa Maid-sama > Millenium Actress

Trigun: Badlands Rumble > The End of Evangelion

Durarara!! > Neon Genesis Evangelion

Clannad > Berserk

Nanoha The Movie 1 > Ghost in the Shell

Lucky Star > The Castle of Cagliostro

Elfen Lied > FLCL

Hetalia Axis Powers > Gunbuster

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children > Revolutionary Girl Utena

K-On!! > Cromartie High School

K-On! > Perfect Blue

Gundam Seed > AKIRA

Katekyo Hitman Reborn > Char's Counterattack

The Word God Only Knows > Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

Mitsudomoe > Ranma 1/2

One Piece > Dragon Ball Z

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun > Daicon Opening Animations

Transformers: The Movie > Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories

Blood+ > Captain Harlock

Hetalia Fan Disc > Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

Squid Girl > Escaflowne

Nanoha Strikers > Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade

Naruto Shippuden > Kare Kano

My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute > The Wings of Honneamise

Air > Osamu Tezuka's Black Jack

Bleach > Ghost Hound

Sengoku Basara > Paranoia Agent

Mai Hime > Gunslinger Girl

and now...

FUN WITH IMDB

There are a couple of points to be made about that list, but the biggest one is this: One Piece has already broken DBZ's manga sales records (both single volume and as a series) in Japan. It has earned the right to be compared to it in terms of cultural impact, if absolutely nothing else. And at that point, if fans overwhelmingly happen to prefer one because, say, it has a very sophisticated and well-written fight system, it's their call.

Also, there are aspects of anime as a medium that one needs to account for when looking at mal scores. Firstly, modern shows have more budget on average and more advanced digital techniques available to provide a greater range of unique effects. You can't look at Usagi Drop or Tiger and Bunny and say that it doesn't look crisper on average than the shows back then. Secondly, ability to entertain a mass audience is important for a broadcast TV medium that lives off dvd sales. Ratings that reflect the ability to entertain a mass audience can't really be considered invalid, even if a show may fall short in other departments. And while it's true that Eva broke sales records and made history in a number of ways, the quality of the show itself are the only thing most viewers today measure when they watch it, and while it has aged very well, it's far from perfect.

Sequels in the toplists are something I have always had an issue with, because they're essentially just fanbase (people who liked s1 enough to finish and try s2) ratings for a given series. Getting mad at that is understandable, I just usually look at first seasons as far as things that are actually relevant when I'm looking at the top anime page nowadays. Not really fair to compare those with IMDB, though, since sequels to 2-hour movies are a lot more accessible than 25-episode tv shows.

People who enjoy the shows you're insinuating are worse quality resent the shows you're insinuating are better quality because people act like this. I happen to personally agree that a lot of those on the right side are better. That said, you haven't really done the research necessary to bash one side or pimp the other when you're taking a bunch of shows you place based on preconceptions vs a bunch of shows you've actually seen. That said, I'm biased a tad based on personal experience. I run a college club nowadays, and I'm more used to working a crowd with a lot of opinions that I have to take into account. Which gets into a big point. People will reject opinions, no matter how merited, when they're stapled to an attack on their favorite show. Comparitively, I've found that the way that works best is to just point out the good points of the shows you want people to try while listening to them talk. And it does work: end result of my crusade of listening to people this year was that popular vote picked Kaiji and Rainbow for showing out of a list containing a bunch of romantic comedies.

I have the powers of research and observation! Though, tell you what; if some day I discover that my first impressions were wrong, I'll go back and correct myself. Just for you!

Oh, damn, I got the honor? Nice to know I've made you happy.

Not really a hatemail or flaming or whatever, though, just wondering on what basis you assume that some shows are better than others without having actually watched either, because if you have psychic powers then I'd really like to know about them.

Are you one of those people who think that 90% of everything that's been made after the nineties sucks? Because it appears to be so. It also appears that most of the anime you listed as the "more popular" (and, in your opinion, the worst ones) for every pair coincide more or less exactly with the list of anime you dropped after one episode.

Darker Than Black > Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (no fuck you, Darker Than Black was stupid and you need to stop defending it just because it looks good next to virtually anything else in the last 5 years)
Dude, you haven't even watched the Cowboy Bebop movie according to your list. Nor most of the other stuff you bashed. I found the Fate/zero vs Grave of the Fireflies comparison particularly strange since apparently you watched neither of the two, and I'm not sure how you'd be so quick to assume that everyone is wrong in assuming Fate/zero is better.
