Anime Relations: Genshiken, Genshiken OVA, Genshiken 2
If there's an anime/manga bargain to be had on the internet that can be gotten to by UK internet people, I'm usually in for the bargain. And, when I actually want what's being given away, I'm left with feelings of joy when my unfriendly Royal Mail van driver hammers my door, hands me a box and, without speaking, turns back towards his van. (I'm unsure if he thinks I'm unfriendly or he's unfriendly, but whatever - he's a middle-aged guy. I'd care more if the driver was a she in her early 20's; a she with a nice rack and a tight uniform. As long as the male drivers don't play football with my stuff, I'm good.)

Yesterday, when I was attempting to sleep to restore my manly beauty, I was awoken by the usual van driver. At the time, I had no clothes on (/real man) and wasn't one with the universe, which means I failed to make it in time to the door. But, as luck would have it, my grandmother lives next door, and the driver now knows without being told to take my trays of parcels to my nan if I'm sleeping, masturbating or, you know, just not in at the time.

I'd actually forgotten about the existence of an order I made with DVD Pacific (before and after the ownership change) due to me having ordered a hell of a lot of manga between my order with DVD Pacific being shipped and it arriving, some two weeks later. It only clicked why my door had been hammered after I thought long and hard about what he could've attempted to deliver to me. And, when my brain did start to function once again, with me now knowing what was going on, off I went to collect my parcel from my very own, easily reachable delivery holding service.

...Oh, you still don't know what I ordered, and you desire to know what the fuck I'm rambling about? Then I'll tell you: the Genshiken 2 box set. DVD Pacific listed it for $18 by mistake; mistaking it for the art box + the first volume, and I profited. It's something I did actually want; Genshiken being a favourite manga of mine and me already owning the first art box. I'll probably never get around to actually watching it due to me being a lazy cunt, but it'll look nice on my shelf. I can't say I'm too sure how having DVDs look nice on shelves will do much good for me, but l don't want to think too deeply about it.

Without any further ado, here are some images (scanned, 'cause I'm still yet to buy a digicam, much like I'm still yet to buy a HDTV and decent PC) I got onto my soon-to-be-dead computer yesterday:

You're jealous of my pretties, aren't you?

The problem I now face is how to watch the Genshiken OVA series (set in-between both TV series) from the comfort of my bed. I cannot be expected to strain my poor back by re-watching them on my PC, and I don't want to buy the Kuji-something DVDs the OVA episodes were placed on for some fucktarded reason, so I'm unsure how to solve this most troubling problem. I think I'll sleep on it.

They've now announced a Genshiken TV + OAV set just to annoy everyone who didn't want KujiUn and bought the TV versions separately. I suppose worst case the OAV-only disc might find its way out as a bargain bin single eventually since they've bothered to press them.

KujiUn is a completely mediocre school series based around grooming the next year's student council (the main character). The President and co from Genshiken are all the previous council and not in it very much except to be evil-looking and mysterious. There are all the usual school tropes and love triangles. None of the characters are very likeable or interesting.

The character designs are also unusually ugly. I'm a bit of a character design freak as is, but these are seriously ugly and a big step down from the OAV version's designs from Genshiken s1. There are some cute Genshiken nods like the previews (sorry, I'm a sad otaku) and the fact that the KujiUn opening sequence is a mirror version of the Genshiken OAV's. If you just want the meat of Genshiken though there's no real reason to force yourself to watch the lesser show.

If you do watch it, just set your expectations to zero, switch off your brain entirely and you might mildly enjoy it as a dumb diversion with a lot of silliness. It coming as a partner to the excellent Genshiken does it no favours at all.

I hope the UK government sort their lives out soon. I'm not happy at all about the strength of the pound right now and another SS sale would be a tad depressing if things don't bounce back quickly. I want to get the last two Hunter x Hunter volumes and slide them in under the customs limit neatly.

(Really going to play DS now!)

What's Kuji supposed to be about, anyway? It looked awful when bits were shown during Genshiken.

I can't quite see why you feel so strongly about the Genshiken characters talking about Kuji for 20 seconds per episode, but SS do have the first two volumes, and they want very little. Next time a free shipping codes pops up, I'll more than likely pick them up in order to move closer to the now inevitable Genshiken marathon.

Not only does the KujiUn set have the Genshiken OAV, though, but it also has the next episode previews for KujiUn narrated by the Genshiken characters. It is therefore necessary to buy KujiUn even if they later excise the OAV episodes for the full Genshiken experience...

I just bought the crummy cheap set for KujiUn because it was worth the price just for the Genshiken stuff. The mediocre, redundant TV series that came as an additional freebie was mildly watchable if treated as nothing more than an extra.
