This the 1st anime I got addicted to ...

Case Closed, also known as Meitantei Conan (名探偵 コナン?, Detective Conan), is a Japanese detective manga series written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama and is serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday since 1994. The name "Case Closed" for the English language release results from "unspecified legal considerations" of the name Detective Conan.[1] The story follows the adventures of Jimmy Kudo, a prodigious young detective who was inadvertently transformed into a child due to a poison.

Case Closed has been continuously serialized in the Japanese manga anthology Weekly Shōnen Sunday since 1994 and has been collected in sixty-five Tankōbon volumes as of August 2009. Since its publication, Case Closed has spawned a substantial media franchise. The manga has been adapted into an animated television series produced by TMS Entertainment which is still ongoing in Japan as it adapts the story from the manga. The series has also spawned eleven original video animations, thirteen animated feature films, and many video games.

Viz Media licensed the manga series under the name for English-language publication in North America and released thirty volumes as of July 2009. Funimation Entertainment licensed the anime series for North American broadcast. Both the English adaption went under the name Case Closed. Fifty episodes of the English dubbed series aired on Cartoon Network as part of their Adult Swim programming block on May 24, 2004 until January 2005 and were discontinued due to low ratings.[2]

The anime adaptation has been well received, ranking in the top twenty in Animage's polls between 1996 until 2000 where it dropped below the top twenty. In the Japanese TV anime ranking, Case Closed often ranked the top six.

Plot:

Jimmy Kudo, a 17-year-old high school prodigy and detective who frequently worked with the police, was attacked by two members of a mysterious crime syndicate while investigating a case regarding blackmail. He was then forced to take a newly developed experimental poison that was supposed to kill him, but due to a rare side-effect unknown to the two men, the drug transformed his body back into that of his seven-year-old self instead, after they left him for dead. In order to hide his identity and investigate the whereabouts of the syndicate, which he later finds out is called the Black Organization, he adopts the pseudonym Conan Edogawa. To search for leads to the syndicate, he manages to move in with his childhood friend Rachel Moore, whose father Richard Moore works as a private investigator. He also enrolls at Teitan elementary school and forms the Junior Detective League with three other children in his class; Amy, Mitch, and George. Even as Conan, Jimmy continues solving criminal cases, usually posing as Richard Moore with the help of special gadgets, invented by a friend of his parents who is a scientist. Richard Moore, a rather inept detective, is bewildered at the sudden rise in his case-solving abilities, but does not question this as he is more than glad about his subsequent rise in fame.

Later in the series, another main character, Anita Hailey, appears. A former member of the Black Organization, codenamed "Sherry", she is actually Shiho Miyano, a gifted chemist who developed the poison APTX 4869 which turned Jimmy back into a child. After her sister was brutally murdered by members of the Black Organization, she tried to get out and was held captive. She then attempted to commit suicide by taking a dose of APTX 4869, but instead was transformed into a child as well, and managed to escape from them. She then enrolled in Conan's school under the pseudonym Anita Hailey. She knows Conan's true identity and helps him in his quest to bring down the Black Organization.

Later on, Conan becomes involved with the American FBI, and they are able to capture Kir, a member of the Black Organization. Kir is later revealed to be an undercover CIA agent, and promises to relay information about the Black Organization to the FBI. They return Kir to the organization. Later, she tells the FBI that the Black Organization has a new member codenamed Bourbon.

Movies:

There are thirteen feature films based on the Case Closed series. The films have been released in April of each year starting in 1997. Each movie features an original plotline, rather than being an adaptation of the manga's story.

The first movie, Case Closed: The Time-Bombed Skyscraper known as Detective Conan: The Time-Bombed Skyscraper (名探偵コナン 時計じかけの摩天楼, Meitantei Conan: Tokei-jikake no matenrō?) in Japan, was screened on April 19, 1997, directed by Michihiko Sawa and written by Kazunari Kochi. It was partly based on Gosho Aoyama's planned ending for Magic Kaito[16], on a chain of arson/bombing cases around Tokyo, intertwined with Rachel's request for a date with Jimmy in a place destined to be bombed. It was released by FUNimation in 2006, and short of standard name changes, there was no significant changes to the English adaptation.

The second movie,Case Closed: The Fourteenth Target known as Detective Conan: The Fourteenth Target (名探偵コナン 14番目の標的, Meitantei Conan Jūyon banme no Tagetto?), in Japan, debuted on April 18, 1998, and the English version was released in 2007. Directed by Kanetsugu Kodama and written by Kazunari Kochi, it was about a case in which people close to Richard Moore were attacked in a way similar to The A.B.C. Murders. This movie achieved a distributor's income of 1.05 billion yen[17]. It was released by FUNimation as a DVD in 2007. Although the storyline remained the same, due to character name changes, there have been significant changes in the explanation of the names used.

The third movie, Case Closed: The Last Wizard of the Century, known as Detective Conan: The Last Wizard of the Century (名探偵コナン 世紀末の魔術師, Meitantei Conan Seikimatsu no Majutsushi?) in Japan, debuted on April 17, 1999. It was again written and directed by Kanetsugu Kodama and Kazunari Kochi respectively. This movie was on a newly-discovered Faberge egg that was subject to Phantom Thief Kid's warning—and a murder case that involves the descendant of Rasputin. This movie achieved a distributor's income of 1.45 billion yen[18].

The fourth movie, Case Closed: Captured in Her Eyes, known as Detective Conan: Captured in Her Eyes (名探偵コナン 瞳の中の暗殺者, Meitantei Conan Hitomi no Naka no Ansatsusha?) in Japan, was first screened on April 22, 2000. Directed and wrote by the same staff of the previous two movies, Captured in Her Eyes was about how Rachel Moore became entangled in a series of murder cases where police officers were victims, and when a failed murder attempt gave her amnesia and made herself another target of the killer. This movie achieved a box office income of 2.5 billion Japanese yen.[19]

The fifth movie, Case Closed: Countdown to Heaven, known as Detective Conan: Countdown to Heaven (名探偵コナン 天国へのカウントダウン, Meitantei Conan Tengoku e no Kauntodaun?) in Japan, was first screened on April 21, 2001. Keeping the director and writer of previous movies, in this movie the murder of a developer, the bombing of the latest development of the development, together with the Black Organization and Anita Hailey's suspicious phone calls, brought it box office receipts of 2.9 billion yen.[20]

The sixth movie, Case Closed: The Phantom of Baker Street, known as Detective Conan: The Phantom of Baker Street (名探偵コナン ベイカー街の亡霊, Meitantei Conan Beikā Sutorīto no Bōrei?) in Japan, was first shown on April 20, 2002. This movie was written by famed scriptwriter Hisashi Nozawa, but kept Kanetsugu Kodama as director. This movie was a double story: in real life, the murder of a IT magnate's chief programmer, while in the virtual world, a virtual reality game that Conan and friends played, their lives were in danger. This movie brought 3.4 billion yen at the box office.[21]

The seventh movie, Detective Conan: Crossroad in the Ancient Capital (名探偵コナン 迷宮の十字路, Meitantei Conan Meikyū no Kurosurōdo?), was first screened on April 19, 2003. The writer was again Kazunari Kochi while Kanetsugu Kodama was kept as the director. Staged in Kyoto, this movie concerned the unmasking of a gang of antique robbers. This movie brought box office income of 3.2 billion yen.[22]

The eighth movie, Detective Conan: Magician of the Silver Sky (名探偵コナン 銀翼の奇術師, Meitantei Conan Gin-yoku no Majishan?), premiered on April 17, 2004. This was the first of Yasuichiro Yamamoto's Detective Conan movies, but Kazunari Kochi stayed as the writer. The movie was about a poisoning case on an airliner, and since the pilot and co-pilot were also affected, Conan Edogawa and Phantom Thief Kid were forced to take case of the lives of the passengers. The movie brought box office income of 2.8 billion yen.[23]

The ninth movie, Detective Conan: Strategy Above the Depths (名探偵コナン 水平線上の陰謀, Meitantei Conan Suiheisenjō no Sutoratejī?), was first screened on April 19, 2005. The movie kept the previous movie's director and writer. Set on a cruise ship and integrating the murder of the shipbuilder, a shipwreck disaster, and part of Rachel Moore and Jimmy Kudo's past, this movie resulted in 2.15 billion yen.[24]

The tenth movie, Detective Conan: The Private Eyes' Requiem (名探偵コナン 探偵たちの鎮魂歌, Meitantei Conan Tantei-tachi no Requiem?)[25] was announced on December 15, 2005 and was released on April 15, 2006, debuting at the number one position in the Japanese box office[26] and remained there for three consecutive weeks. Important personnel such as Hattori Heiji, Phantom Thief Kid and Saguru Hakuba have all appeared in this movie.

The eleventh movie, Detective Conan: Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure (名探偵コナン 紺碧の棺, Meitantei Conan Konpeki no Jorī Rojā?), was first released on April 27, 2007. Written by Kazunari Kochi and directed by Kanetsugu Kodama, the movie was about the murder of treasure hunters and the alleged loot left by pirate Anne Bonny on a Japanese island. This movie brought in 2.53 billion yen[28].

The twelfth movie, Detective Conan: Full Score of Fear (名探偵コナン 戦慄の楽譜, Meitantei Conan Senritsu no Furu Sukoa?)[29] was announced on February 20, 2008[30], and released on April 19, 2008, debuting at the number one position in the Japanese box office.[31][32] It is unknown how long it remained there at this time. There have been reports that the advertising for the film was limited, yet normal for a Detective Conan movie.[32] It was reported that (an estimate of) 350,000 people watched the movie in its opening weekend alone.[31] As of May 5, 2008 the movie has earned over 420.03 million yen.[31]. It is twelfth on 2008's Top Domestic Movies at Japanese Box Office.[33] This movie brought in 2.42 billion yen

The thirteenth movie, Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser (名探偵コナン 漆黒の追跡者 Meitantei Conan Shikkoku no Chaser?) was previewed at the end of the twelfth movie and was released on April 18, 2009. The fourteenth movie was announced at the end of the thirteenth movie theaterical release.

Jimmy Kudo
Main article: Jimmy Kudo

Jimmy Kudo known as Shinichi Kudo (工藤 新一, Kudo Shinichi?) in Japan, is the protagonist of the series. Jimmy is a brilliant high school detective who often solves difficult cases for the police. After getting in over his head with a certain case, he is attacked and forced to take an experimental poison by a member of a mysterious secret crime organization that he was investigating. The drug was supposed to kill him, but due to a rare side-effect, he was inadvertently shrunk back to his childhood body. In order to keep his true identity a secret, he now goes under the alias Conan Edogawa (江戸川 コナン, Edogawa Konan?) and pretends to be a real child to throw off suspicion while he secretly solves many cases and looks for clues about the organization. He fears the organization will come back and kill him and everyone he knows if it is discovered that he isn't really dead. He also has always had a crush on his childhood friend, Rachel Moore who he is openly in love with but cannot reveal his feelings to in his current condition. Before he was shrunk, Jimmy was a popular detective, a great soccer player, and was sometimes a bit full of himself before he became "Conan". His two seiyū are Kappei Yamaguchi for Jimmy and Minami Takayama for Conan. He is voiced by Jerry Jewell for Jimmy and Alison Viktorin for Conan. In the TV Drama he was portrayed by Shun Oguri in teenage form and Nao Fujisaki in child form.
[edit] Rachel Moore
Main article: Rachel Moore

Rachel Moore known as Ran Mouri (毛利 蘭, Mōri Ran?) in Japan, is Jimmy's best friend since elementary school. Both are in love with one another but neither have the courage to admit their feelings. She is skilled in martial arts and is the captain of her karate team, though her resolve can be easily broken if she has to face anything related with the horror genre. She spends most of her home life looking after Conan and her irresponsible father. Her seiyū is Wakana Yamazaki and her English voice actress is Colleen Clinkenbeard. In the live drama, she was portrayed by Tomoka Kurokawa.
[edit] Richard Moore
Main article: Richard Moore (Case Closed)

Richard Moore known as Kogoro Mouri (毛利 小五郎, Mōri Kogorō?) in Japan is Rachel's father, a former police officer turned incompetent private detective. He was married to Eva Kadan, a successful lawyer and childhood friend, but now they are living separately. Despite his irresponsible ways, he appears to care deeply for his daughter, and at times shows some flashes of honor and strict ethics. His seiyū are Akira Kamiya[1] and in 2009 was replaced with Rikiya Koyama[2], and his English voice actor is R. Bruce Elliot. He was portrayed by Takanori Jinnai in the live drama.

Black organization

Gin
Main article: Gin (Case Closed)

Gin (ジン, Gin?), known in the localized manga as Melkior but is later refered to as Gin, is one of the top-ranked members in the BO, as well as the person who gave the APTX 4869 poison to Jimmy. He is extremely cold-blooded and one of the most menacingly-drawn villains. He is also extremely perceptive, and as such it would be extremely difficult to catch him. His seiyū is Yukitoshi Hori and his English voice actor is Troy Baker. He was portrayed by Sasaki Kuranosuke in the live drama.
[edit] Vodka
Main article: Vodka (Case Closed)

Vodka (ウォッカ, Vodka?) is a member of the BO, who is usually seen alongside Gin, whom he refers to as aniki ("older brother"). Unlike Gin, Vodka is very slow and easy to trick and, as such, would have been caught many times if he didn't stay with Gin so often. He is originally called Kaspar in the manga, but it is later changed to Vodka. His seiyū is Fumihiko Tachiki and his English voice actor is Kyle Herbert. He was portrayed by Taro Okada in the live drama.
[edit] Vermouth
Main article: Sharon Vineyard

Vermouth is an important member of the Black Organization. Her true identity is Sharon Vineyard, a famous American actress who mastered the skill of disguise alongside her friend Yukiko (Vivian) Kudo, Jimmy's mother. They were both tutored through an acting class by the world famous magician, Toichi Kuroba, (who was secretly the original Kaitou Kid and who was later killed by an underground organization, though it has not been confirmed in the series to have been the B.O.).

Vermouth is the Boss's favorite member of the organization, and she is shrouded with mystery. The cold-blooded part of her personality doesn't hesitate to carry out the B.O.'s top orders in the forms of murders and so forth, without the slightest bit of remorse. However, she shows affection for both Shinichi (Jimmy) and Ran (Rachel) after they unknowingly save her life as she is disguised as a male serial killer in New York. She eventually realizes who Conan must really be later in the series, and supports him in a way, by protecting him and keeping his true identity hidden from the other B.O. members. She believes that if anyone is capable of bringing down the Black Organization, Conan/Jimmy is that "silver bullet". She also does not seem to ever age, or ages extremely slowly. It is still a mystery as to why this is. She even goes to such lengths as to say she has a "daughter" named Chris Vineyard and she disguises herself as both "Sharon" and "Chris." She is questioned about her agelessness by Jodie Starling, who has a personal vendetta against her. Jodie remembered that Vermouth killed her father, who was also an FBI agent, when she was just a little girl. Vermouth never gives her a straight answer. "Sharon" later supposedly dies, while "Chris" looks on at the funeral. Vermouth's famous line is "A secret makes a woman, a woman." Her seiyū is Mami Koyama.

Plot

Oz Vessalius, heir to one of the duke houses, has just turned fifteen. His life is rich and carefree, darkened only by the constant absence of his father. At his coming-of-age ceremony, however, everything changes. For no reason that he can discern, he is cast into the prison known as the "Abyss", only to be saved by a "chain" known as Alice, the bloodstained black rabbit or B-rabbit for short. The mystery there begins as Oz unravels the mystery behind Alice, the Abyss and the strange organization known as Pandora. The series features heavy references to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and can be considered both fantasy and mystery.
[edit] Terminology

characters

Oz Vessalius (オズ ベザリウス, Ozu Vessariusu?)

Oz Vessalius

The main character of the story. A 15-year-old boy with blond hair and green eyes from the prestigious Vessalius family, whose father is the reigning lord. His mother was killed by the Nightray family, but despite this, he retains a bright, optimistic, and energetic personality. The story of Pandora Hearts starts when Oz turns fifteen. During the ceremony to celebrate this reaching of adulthood, he was dragged into the Abyss for the sin of 'existing'. There he meets the chain named Alice and makes a contract with her. Upon returning to the real world, he finds out that 10 years have passed. In order to find out what his sin meant, he began to work under Break as part of Pandora. During this, it is shown that when he was young, he worked hard to gain praise and recognition from his father. However, he had discovered that his father hated him to the point of not wanting to touch him. After experiencing this, Oz began to think that there is no guaranteed thing in the world. He thought of himself as weak and, in order to protect people, he should at least remain an obedient child and let harm come his way.

After traveling into the Cheshire Cat's lair, Oz meets Jack Vessalius and in turn becomes his 'medium'. Jack eventually speaks at Pandora's headquarters and the public hail Oz as a 'hero'. Oz finds that he can swap control of his body with Jack if he calls hard enough and may sometimes even see snippets of Jack's memories. According to himself he is quite skilled with the sword, particularly in self defense. However, he has no real experience in fighting. Oz likes cute, younger girls and flirts with them frequently. He once wished to marry Shalon when they first met. In chapter 20, Oz called Alice "my most precious Alice", but it is not known if these feelings are sincerely his or Jack's since he resides in his body. Oz, himself, thinks of Alice as his precious someone. He thinks that it is because of Alice that he can still smile.

Jack tells Oz that has the "right" or "prerequisite" over Alice's powers and that a seal won't restrain Alice's powers any longer, making Oz have the ability to use B-Rabbit's power even without Alice's permission or Gil's help. Oz proves it when he was able to stop Alice's B-Rabbit's power temporarily on his own; another time when Oz was almost kidnapped by the Baskervilles at Latowidge, and then recently when he was able to summon B-Rabbit's scythe to fluently fight his assailants inside Sablier's illusion, despite the fact he had never used a scythe before. (He doesn't seem to notice this though). According to Lotti, Oz was suppose to be the vessel for the sake of hiding the existence of Jack Vessalius and should the vessel be broken, Jack’s existence will be brought to light and the further warping of abyss’s will, who seeks for him, will most probably interfere with the real world. Later, Oz reunites with Gilbert and immediately meets with the person behind Oz's suicidal nature: Zai Vessalius, his father. It has been seen that Oz has had a will to destroy everything until Alice stops him.
Oz's Seiyū is Junko Minagawa.

Alice (アリス, Arisu?)
Alice
The heroine of the story with a height of 150cm. Alice first appears as a chain that persuades Oz to form a contract with her in the Abyss. In fact, she is actually the infamous B-Rabbit (Bloodstained Black Rabbit), the strongest chain in the Abyss. Alice's goal is to find her lost memories, which plays a major role in the story. In human form, Alice has long dark brown hair with 2 side plaits. She has a huge appetite and loves meat especially. She is hotheaded, loud spoken and says what she thinks without regard to the consequences. Despite this, she has a soft side, especially when Oz is involved. She hates when Oz leaves her alone, but to hide it she usually says, "I'm in a contract with you. You are my manservant, and as a manservant, what were you thinking, leaving me behind!?" or she just hits Oz and says, "Shut up".

It also appears that she is developing feelings for Oz, being that she considers his health when using her powers. Also, in episode 20, she tells Shalon, who threatens her to tell her what she has on her mind, that she felt left out and ignored when Oz went to talk with Break without her and when he was happy to see his sister.
Alice's Seiyū are Yukari Tamura (Drama CD) and Ayako Kawasumi (Anime).

Gilbert Nightray (ギルバート ナイトレイ, Girubāto Naitorei?)

Raven

Oz's best friend and loyal servant. To him, Oz is his most precious person, and he is willing to sacrifice anything for him. He was taken into the Vessalius family after being discovered in an injured state 15 years ago. He was invited by Oz to attend the coming of age ceremony as his friend. During the ceremony, he was controlled by a chain in the Baskerville's possession and forced to attack Oz. After regaining consciousness, Gilbert tries to stop one of the Baskervilles. He ends up seeing his face, who is later revealed to be Oz's father, and protects him when Oz tries to slash at him. This causes Oz to cut Gilbert instead. After he was hit, Gilbert passed out.
He goes on to become Raven (鴉, Reibun?) and appears as a member of Pandora who retrieves Oz after he escaped from the Abyss. Oz later discovers Raven's true identity, and calls him Gil again. However, everyone else still calls him Raven. After the ceremony 10 years ago, he was adopted by the Nightray family, who earlier adopted his younger brother Vincent, and thus feels that he betrayed Oz because the Nightrays were the prime suspects in the assassination of Oz's mother. He had no memory of Vincent before they met at the Nightrays. In hopes to eventually rescuing Oz from the Abyss, Gilbert trained hard in gunmanship, and even killed in order to tame the Nightray family's chain 'Raven'. He uses its power to somewhat control the B-rabbit through Oz, preventing side effects like the clock hand moving. After 10 years, he still hates cats and is a wonderful cook. After drinking alcohol he reverts back to his 'Gilbert' self: insecure cry-baby. He really cares about the hat that Ada gave him. He is from 100 years ago and used to serve Jack along with Vincent, but he was killed by Glen while trying to protect Jack, and his brother Vincent open the path to Abyss in order to save him. And in later chapters he has a fear of being left behind. Gil is one of suspects for the murder of Alice a hundred years ago. It is revealed that Gil was killed in order to be Glen's new vessel. The chain, which would be used in the ritual, is ironically Raven, his current chain. Vincent, however, interfered the ritual by opening the Abyss Door and in return, caused the Tragedy to happen. Gilbert has also reunited with Oz in Sabrie where they immediately meet Oz's father, Zai Vessalius.

Shalon Rainsworth (シャロン レインズワース, Shalon Reinzuwāsu?)

Shalon Rainsworth

The Lady of the Rainsworth household. Shalon is a member of Pandora and looks like a thirteen year old girl, although she is technically 23 years old. Her appearance does not change from her first meeting with Oz to after he came out of the Abyss because she has a legal contract with a chain, the black unicorn Eques. Shalon and Break have a close relationship. She was the one that discovered Break in a fatal condition after he came out of the Abyss. When she was young, she used to call Break 'Xerxes-nii', as he was like a big brother to her. She wants to be of use to him. She also looks a lot like her mother, Shelly Rainsworth. While Oz and co. were taken into the Cheshire Cat's dimension, Shalon was abducted by Echo under the orders of Vincent Nightray, who poisoned Shalon in order to blackmail Break into destroying the memories from the Tragedy of Sablier that Break attained from the Cheshire Cat. Despite Shalon protesting to Break to not destroy the memories, which took the form of the bell Cheshire wore around his neck, Break destroyed the memories in exchange for the poison's antidote. Shalon develops a queen complex when she drinks, which Oz strangely finds cool.
Shalon's Seiyūs are Yui Horie (Drama CD) and Hanazawa Kana (Anime).

Xerxes Break (ザークシーズ ブレイク, Zākushĩzu Bureiku?)

Xerxes Brëak

Commonly known as Break, he is a member of Pandora and a servant of the Rainsworth household. Break's appearance does not change from the ten year gap between Oz entering and leaving the Abyss. He has a legal contract with the Mad Hatter. Break is often seen with a doll on his shoulder, which he calls Emily. He adores sweets and cakes. From the outside, Break seems like a carefree character, never serious and always smiling. When needs be, however, Break shows his dangerous and evil side. Reim tells Oz that Break has not always been the way he is now. Before, after losing his eye, he was a bitter and angry person, never smiling. However, through the kindness of Shelly, Shalon's mother, he began to open up. He has sworn absolute loyalty to Shelly.

Break has no left eye. He reveals that the Intention of the Abyss took it from him and that the Cheshire has it. Break's true motive is to find the truth behind what happened 100 years ago. He hates Vincent with a passion.

It was revealed by Rufus Barma in chapter 29 that his real name is Kevin Regnard. Break was originally a knight who served under the noble family Sinclair until they were mysteriously massacred for political reasons. His lord was killed during the incident while Kevin and the daughter of the lord were out. Kevin blamed himself for his carelessness, and became an illegal contractor to try to change the past. When his clock made a full revolution, he was pulled into Abyss where he met the Intention of the Abyss and a young Vincent. The Intention of the Abyss once changed the past for Break. In return, Break was asked to fulfilled her wish, which is still unknown. Break then was sent to the Rainsworth house over 30 years later.

The changed past wasn't really what Break wanted. The Sinclair family was still murdered. According to Cheryl, the oldest daughter of the house was assassinated, which led the younger daughter to become an illegal contractor and got sent to Abyss after her Chain murdered the entire family. The political massacre did not happen and Kevin's lord lived for 4 years longer, but instead, the little girl who originally survived the incident died. Break blames himself for that. For one moment he also blamed the Intention of the Abyss, but he realizes that he was the one who asked for the past to be changed, and in reality, he really just wanted to erase his own guilt. In Retrace 42, it is shown that Break has lost his eyesight, causing him to be blind.
Break's Seiyū are Toshihiko Seki (Drama CD) and Ishida Akira (Anime).

Magic Knight Rayearth (魔法騎士レイアース, Mahō Kishi Reiāsu?) is a Japanese manga series created by Clamp, a mangaka team made up by Satsuki Igarashi, Ageha Ohkawa, Tsubaki Nekoi and Mokona. Rayearth combines elements from the magical girl and mecha anime genres with parallel world fantasy.

The manga was adapted into an anime series in 1994 and a OVA in 1997.

Plot

Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, Fuu Hououji are on a field trip to the Tokyo Tower with their respective schools. The girls are blinded by a flash of light and hear a voice calling for the Legendary Magic Knights to save Cephiro. They fall through the sky into another world, Cephiro. Once there, they meet Master Mage Clef. Clef explains, "[In Cephiro], one's will has the ability to change reality for better or worse. The dark fears in people's hearts become monsters, while a well-intended wish can do miracles. One person, the Pillar, whose will is stronger than anyone else's, is responsible for maintaining through her prayers the well-being of Cephiro."

In the first story arc, the current Pillar, Princess Emeraude, has been captured by her high priest, Zagato. The three girls are charged with the task of saving the Princess by activating the three Rune-Gods (魔神, Mashin?). They are given a bizarre creature named Mokona to guide them on their journey. When the girls finally reach Emeraude, they learn that she had fallen in love with Zagato, hindering her ability to pray solely for Cephiro's well-being, and had summoned the Magic Knights to kill her since no one on Cephiro could harm the Pillar.

The second story arc deals with the complications caused by the first season's climax: three warring planets, Autozam, Fahren, and Chizeta, have begun their attempts to conquer Cephiro and a new Pillar must be chosen before the whole planet is destroyed. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu are once again summoned to Cephiro. In the manga it is later discovered that the mysterious Mokona is responsible for their being summoned back to Cephiro, and he is, in fact, the creator of both the Earth and Cephiro. In the anime they return to Cephiro because of their (especially Hikaru's) strong desire to do so.

Eventually, Hikaru is chosen to become the new Pillar. However, she rebels against the Pillar system, deciding that the fate of the planet should not be the responsibility of only one person, effectively preventing that person from ever being able to live and love freely.

Hikaru, Fuu and Umi return to earth, but still can visit their loved ones in Cephiro.

Characters

Main article: List of Magic Knight Rayearth characters

Hikaru Shidou (獅堂 光, Shidō Hikaru?) (Lucy Shido or Lucy González) is an eighth-grade girl, small for her age and often teased for her boyishness. She is headstrong, determined and loyal. She is the Magic Knight of Fire. She is in love with Lantis, Zagato's younger brother, but it is implied that she is also in love with Eagle Vision, the son of the president of Autozam.

Umi Ryuuzaki (龍咲 海, Ryūzaki Umi?) (Marina Ryuzaki or Marina Santana) is the only child of a rich family. She is quick-tempered and at first uncaring, though perhaps the best-suited for the task at hand, but is also the most reluctant. She is the Magic Knight of Water.

Fuu Hououji (鳳凰寺 風, Hōōji Fū?) (Anemone Hooji or Anais Araujo) is the voice of reason. She is also highly intelligent, though this goes more for booksmarts than streetsmarts. She often has moments where she doubts herself, but ends up coming out strong in the end. She is also in love with Ferio. She is the Magic Knight of Wind.

Mokona is a seemingly intelligent rabbit-like creature with a gem on his forehead. It travels along with the three knights and helps them to find their way to find the runegods.
