You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
The Western anime fandom loves to use Japanese terms but all too often gets them wrong. Here's a few common mistakes.
1. Hentai. Otaku have never used this word to describe their porn. These days the most commonly used term is "ero", short for erotic. For more detailed analysis, see
http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=500383#post500383.
2. Shounen. Strangely, a lot of people I have come across think of shounen as a genre rather than a demographic. Specifically, they only use it to refer to fighting series like Bleach or Naruto.
3. Visual Novel. It's a bit petty, but what many people think of as Visual Novel games (NVL) should actually be described as Adventure Games (AVG or ADV). It all comes down to a difference in presentation. With NVL, the text is displayed overlaid on the images, whilst with AVG, the text is in a window at the bottom of the screen.
4. OAV. This term is used interchangeably with OVA to refer to anime made specially for release in home-video formats. Humorously, Japanese fans only use OAV to refer to porn (Original Adult Video).
5. Shoujo-Ai. Don't get me started on this one. Seriously guys, just read the Wikipedia article or something ('cuz Wiki is right about everything [citation needed]).
Well, that was my first blog entry. Hopefully I didn't come across too spergy.
