Umineko no Naku Koro ni Theories (Spoilers)
Anime Relations: Umineko no Naku Koro ni
I am making some notes on observations seen throughout the anime Umineko no Naku Koro ni. I will be attempting to solve the mystery of who the true culprit is and will write theories on the mysteries presented throughout the anime. I have currently finished playing the VNs through EP4. This blog consist of Anti-Fantasy theories since it requires much more thinking and is overall more fun to do than Anti-Mystery. I will continue to add more information upon each episode release. I have played the VNs but I will follow the anime's pace because it helps summarize the murders. Finally fixed EP1 theories so all the theories are good.

My Guess for True Culprit (Spoilers from all EP)
Kanon is the true culprit. Kanon's real name is "Battler Ushiromiya", therefore he can replace Battler's survival in red text with his own once "Kanon" dies. Whenever Beatrice states "Kanon is dead" in red text, she is referring to the name "Kanon" because once he admits to being "Battler" he then takes the name "Battler". This would also help explain why Kanon's body is missing in EP2+4, who killed Nanjo in EP3, and who killed Battler in EP4.
Arc#1: Legend of the Golden Witch
Theories
Main Suspects/Accomplices for Legend of the Golden Witch
- Natsuhi (killed by Kanon)
- Kanon and/or Shannon
- Nanjo (killed by true culprit, or if true culprit, by Kanon)
- Possibly Kumasawa (may have tried to kill Kanon and was Natsuhi's accomplice)
- True Culprit (but gets killed by Kanon)
Of course it's even easier to suspect that all the murders were done by Kanon, and he was manipulating Nanjo by making him suspect someone else. All murders could easily be done by Kanon, and Nanjo could have placed the letter in order to escape from Natsuhi.
First Twilight
Suspect: Anyone
Theory #1: Rosa, Rudolf, Kyrie, Krauss, and Gohda, along with the the culprit (culprit may be among those 5) go to the parlor and are then either poisoned or shot by a silenced pistol. The culprit asks Shannon/Gohda to get the key without their knowledge of the murders (The culprit requires Shannon/Gohda to get the key because if he/she isn't one of the servants he/she doesn't know which key opens the shed (since the location of the key is located along with countless other keys)). After receiving the key Shannon/Gohda is either murdered separately or enters with family members. Once everyone enters the shed culprit locks the door. Since only Nanjo and Hideyoshi saw Shannon's body there is a possibility of Shannon's body being "identified",yet actually being a similar looking fake.
It is unknown if the murderer also drew the magic circle. If someone saw bodies being placed in the shed but not the killer the person drew the symbol in order to tell the others where the victims bodies were while avoiding suspicion. This would explain why the door was locked and the key returned, because the culprit didn't actually want the bodies to be found. The key can now be returned to the servant's quarters without required knowledge of where the key initially was (since only 1 key should be missing.)
Eva and Hideyoshi's Death
Red Text
- Both were killed by another person!
- It is not the case that, after the construction of the closed room, one of them committed suicide after committing murder!
- Furthermore, the murder was carried out with both the victim and the perpetrator in the same room!
- No method exists for the perpetrator to commit murder from outside the room!
- The identities of all unidentified corpses are guaranteed!
Suspect: Any Servant, Anyone (as long as door gets opened)
Theory #1: Culprit goes to Eva's door and Eva opens it (shows that Eva trusts the culprit (meaning the culprit cannot be someone supposedly dead) and has no visible weapons on his/her person.) After entry the culprit...
1. Kills victims with an unknown weapon (possibly stakes but more likely a silenced pistol), places stakes in Eva and Hideyoshi's head, than escapes through the window (for this to be the case Kanon or Kumasawa would have to relock the window). Either Kanon or Kumasawa could also cut the chain lock and say the door was locked prior to the murder. (Most likely scenario)
2. Kills victims and remains hidden in the room throughout the bodies discovery (very unlikely since the culprit has a high chance of getting caught.)
3. Poisons victims than leaves. Victims relocked door and are killed shortly after (most likely though doesn't explain how the stakes were discovered in their heads.)
4. Kills victims and escapes through a hidden passage. (easy solution but most rooms later on are proven to have no secret doors)
Either murderer, servant, or Nanjo places Beatrice's letter under the door.
The Magic Symbol on Eva and Hideyoshi's Door
Theory #1: The door already has the magic symbol when Genji and Kanon reach the door. They lie about it not being there before for unknown reasons (whether they influenced the crime or not). (after reading EP4 most likely scenario)
Kanon's Death
Suspect: None, Kumasawa, Defaced Victim
Red Text
- All of the survivors have alibis!
- Let us include the dead as well!!
- In short, no kind of human or dead person on the island could have killed Kanon!
- Kanon did not commit suicide.
- Kanon did not die in an accident!
Theory #1: Kanon fakes his own death by pouring paint all over the room and his person. Kanon then places stake near him and pretended he ripped it out (in VN). Nanjo plays along and once Nanjo and Jessica leave Kanon's corpse, Kanon is able to move around freely. (most likely scenario)
Theory #2: Kanon gets attacked by Kumasawa. He barely survives with Nanjo's aid, and plays dead after telling him about Natsuhi's and Kumasawa's plans.
Theory #3: Culprit has killed the person with their current name and has taken his/her name in order to get close to the Ushiromiya family. With this the dead have an alibi since the killer isn't actually the same person.
Kinzo's Death
Theory #1: Will be explained in EP4
Genji, Kumasawa, and Nanjo's Death
Red Text
- Maria, who was in the same room, did not kill them!
- And of course, the three were killed by other people!"
- Regarding unidentified corpses, all of their identities are guaranteed.
- Therefore, no body double tricks exist!
- Genji, Kumasawa, and Nanjo are not murderers
Suspect: True Culprit, Kanon/Shannon
Theory #1: Once the true culprit (Nanjo, Kumasawa, or Genji) is alone with the others the true culprit proceeds to murder the rest (solved by having a fake name). He/She is about to kill Maria for the final sacrifice when Kanon appears and kills the true culprit. Kanon explains to Maria that Natsuhi is an accomplice and Maria must lie to the others. (Whole Maria part may be wrong)
Theory #2: Kanon/Shannon kills Nanjo, Kumasawa, and Genji because Kanon/Shannon is the true culprit in Legend of the Golden Witch. Or something complex happens which in the end makes him kill off everyone.
Natsuhi’s Death
Red Text
- Natsuhi was killed by another person!
- There are no unidentified corpses, and all of the survivors have alibis!"
- "The bullet buried into Natsuhi's forehead was not fired from Natsuhi's gun!"
- The thing that shot Natsuhi wasn't a trap, it was a real shooting murder with a gun raised and trigger pulled!
Suspect: Kanon and or Shannon
Theory #1 Maria says that Natsuhi left the room while reading a letter. There is no letter, Kanon/Shannon asked Maria to say that to the others. Once Natsuhi realizes that her accomplice has been killed she suddenly realizes that Kanon/Shannon is alive. Kanon/Shannon is waiting for her with a gun and shoots her once she enters the room.

Arc#2: Turn of the Golden Witch
Theories
Main Suspects/Accomplices for Turn of the Golden Witch
- Rosa
- Kumasawa and/or Nanjo
- True Culprit
- Possibly Genji
Who is Beatrice?
- Maria, Rosa, Genji, Shannon, Kanon, and Kyrie saw Beatrice (Bolded people do not have the proper wavelengths to see the true Beatrice)
Suspect: Jessica and Kumasawa (Kumasawa may play Jessica's role requiring no Jessica involvement)
Theory #1: Once Maria reaches Rokkenjima she tells everyone about the enjoyment of Halloween. Kumasawa states that there are "Halloween Cookies" in the house. Upon hearing how interested Maria is in Halloween, Jessica and Kumasawa come up with a surprise Halloween party for Maria (Both Kumasawa and Jessica are not seen much throughout the day). Jessica sets up the party in the chapel while Kumasawa bakes the cookies and treats. In order to surprise Maria, Jessica asks Kanon where Maria was and finds out that she is in the rose garden with her broken pumpkin candy. Jessica tells Kannon to go back to Maria and tell her Beatrice is coming to meet her so she should stay put. Jessica dresses up as Beatrice and "fixes" the pumpkin candy by switching it with the one Maria just gave her, she then proceeds to give Maria the letter with the chapel key Rosa is than given a letter to scare the adults by Jessica (Kumasawa made a statement of how the family conference would be in shock if "Beatrice" appeared). The door to the chapel has already been unlocked once the letter is given to Maria Later that night Jessica/Kumasawa wrote "Happy Halloween for Maria" on the chapel door. Everything after Jessica meets Kyrie does not actually happen.
Theory #2: Anyone not accounted for dressed up as Beato.
First Twilight
Red Text
- Regardless of whether they were living or dead, the six people definitely entered through the door'!"
- Only one key to the chapel exists!"
- It is impossible to unlock the lock to the chapel without the chapel's key!!
- When the door to the chapel is locked, it prevents any and all methods of entry or exit!!
- Six people definitely entered through 'this front door'!!"
- This morning, Rosa definitely took an envelope out of Maria's handbag, and thereby obtained the genuine key to the chapel.
- That which was inside the envelope I entrusted Maria with, was definitely the key to the chapel.
- The letter that I handed over to Maria and the one Rosa opened are the same thing!!
- Starting when Maria's key was received, and until the instant Rosa unsealed it the next day, it passed through no one's hands!!
- No door with an auto-lock exists other than Kinzo's study!
- The six people were already dead by the time they were discovered!
- All were killed by other people!
- All six were genuine victims, and did not take part in a mutual murder!
- There was no simultaneous murder!!"
- There was no one hiding in the chapel. By this, a shut-in murder like you say does not work!
- When the six were killed in the chapel, the culprit was inside the chapel!
Suspect: Rosa, Maria, (Possible Kumasawa involvement)
Theory #1: With all the red truth stated it is nearly impossible for anyone besides Rosa or Maria to relock the door to the chapel, though I suppose it is possible that Rosa or Maria did not actually kill the victims one of them must have played some role, either knowingly or unknowingly (possible red herring showing Rosa in chapel prior to First Twilight). Starting when Maria's key was received, and until the instant Rosa unsealed it the next day, it passed through no one's hands!! initially this shows that the only person who can relock the chapel door is Maria, however, it uses the obscure term "next day" this means that Rosa is allowed to open the letter at any point on October 5th. When the six were killed in the chapel, the culprit was inside the chapel! This shows that the victims were alive once they entered the chapel. Kumasawa may have played a role in the murder if she set up the party and tricked the victims into entering the chapel (the party should only be known to a limited amount of people).
Theory #2 (short-hand version): Culprit went to Maria when everyone was asleep, woke her up, and asked Maria to lock the chapel door.
Kanon and Jessica's Death
Red Text
- The only master keys are the ones that each servant holds, one per person.
- First, there are absolutely no types of hidden doors.
- This door is the only entrance or exit.
- The only way to lock this door is with Jessica's single key or the master keys, only one of which is held by each servant.
- The window is locked from the inside."
- Kanon was killed in this room'.
- When locked, entry is not possible by any means.
- No device could have the effect of locking the door from the outside without using a key.
- Kanon was killed in this room
- There are no hidden doors in this room.
- There is no way to get in or out other than the door and the window.
- There are no hidden doors
Suspect: Rosa, Genji, Shannon, Kumasawa, Gohda (reason why first 3 are suspects is answered in EP4)
Theory #1: Simply put one of the suspects murdered Kanon and Jessica and relocked the door with a master key. Rosa is included because her whereabouts are not easily verified (will be shown in EP4). Nothing states that the door was originally locked meaning Rosa does have the ability to kill both Jessica and Kanon. The relocking of the door may be caused by the killer or by someone with a secondary intent. It is unknown why Kanon's body is removed, though this is the 2nd time (and not the last) that he has been shown being killed in the chest (though since his body cannot be verified this is a red herring). A highly probable reason why Kanon's body is removed is that the culprit assumed that Kanon had a master key on his person, since Kanon's body is missing he would be the main suspect and the victims would let their guard down (remember the culprit is not infallible, the culprit can make mistakes). Kanon was killed in this room. severely limits the Kanon=Shannon theory. This murder tries to disprove the initial Jessica=Beatrice theory because Gohda shows the survivors Beatrice's 2nd letter basically proving (unless Gohda is a culprit) that Jessica really did run to the special guest room, meaning that she really did believe Beatrice was in that room. However, this murder may have much more to it than what meets the eye (possible tampering with the information and murder scene to determine culprit). An interesting point that may show Gohda is lying for an unknown reason is how Gohda makes it so we are made to believe in Kanon's innocence due to Jessica having Kanon's master key on her corpse. The reason why this is suspicious is that if the culprit wanted the 2nd Witch's Letter to be found why would she lock the door, and why would Kanon give Jessica the key and not open it himself.
Theory#2: When Nanjo searches through Jessica's corpse for a master key Nanjo places the master key there and pretends to have found it on her person. Nanjo received the key from the person he was collaborating with after he/she murdered Jessica and Kanon.
Theory#3: It is never officially stated or shown that the key in Jessica's room is actually Jessica's room key. The only proof that the servants have in believing it is the same key is the key chain. The culprit may have replaced Jessica's room key with a fake key and attached the key chain to the fake key. In the VN Rosa tests Jessica's key on the door.
Kanon's Reappearance/Nanjo and Kumasawa's Disappearance
Red Text
- [Those are] kept in the key box in center of the servants' room.(Referring to the Servant room key)
- [There are several keys to the servants' room, but] all of those are inside the key box. (Referring to the Servant room key)
- Entry or exit is impossible except for the single door and single window. And those were both locked.
- The door and the window do not permit any kind of entry or exit when they are locked
- It is impossible to unlock the door without a key to the servants' room or the master key.
- No one exists in this room except all of you. All of you refers to Battler, George, Maria, Rosa, Genji, Gohda, and Shannon.
- Therefore, both in the case of Jessica's room and the case in this servants' room, no humans exist that are you were not aware of.
- No one is hiding
- No method exists by which the door can be locked from the outside without using a key.
- Regarding the window, no method exists by which it could somehow be locked from the outside.
- They definitely would not mistake any different person for Kanon!
- There are only 5 master keys
- The only one who can claim Kanon's name is the person himself! A different person cannot claim his name!
Suspect: None
Theory #1: Kanon’s body never actually appeared. Once all the servants left the room, Shannon and Genji told the others that Rosa never actually went to Kinzo’s study (Will be explained later). They concluded that Rosa was the most likely the suspect because she lied about her alibi (This can be further determined since she acted like she wasn’t sure if Genji and Shannon were clear of suspicion). They decided that they would create a false story to tell Rosa in order to see her reaction to Kanon’s survival. Kumasawa and Nanjo were told to hide somewhere since they are unimportant and physically weak. They then covered the room in red paint before telling Rosa about the murder. The fact that only Genji is able to answer what happened immediately, quickly followed by Shannon and Gohda shows that Shannon and Gohda decided to follow Genji’s story because they weren’t completely sure what they should say.
George, Shannon, and Gohda’s Death
Red Text(Red text will be given at EP4)
- Natsuhi's room was exactly the same, just like usual (Refers to the closed room scenario)
- The door and the windows were locked from the inside
- There is no fraud or trick, there is no means of secret passage and no hidden place
- Natsuhi's own key was in George's pocket and the inside of the room was closed off
- Only the five master keys were left, and 'Rosa' was holding all of them
- And let me say this, the parlor's the same
- The original key to the parlor is sealed in the servants' room
- So unlocking it without the master key is impossible! The definition of a closed is the same as always!
- There are only 5 master keys
- All of the master keys were under Rosa's control!
- After the master keys came into Rosa's control, never did any of them leave her hands!
- Except for the time when she lent it to Battler to unlock Natsuhi's room.
Suspect: Anyone except for Battler, Maria, and Rosa
Theory #1: If there was a real reason for going to Natsuhi's room it is unknown. A possible reason is that Natsuhi's door was covered in bloody hand prints (yet again) and George, Shannon, and Gohda decided to check to see if Kumasawa and Nanjo were alright (since they faked their deaths before). The door was unlocked when they entered. The culprit murdered them once they entered Natsuhi's room. Since the red text states that Natsuhi's key was in George's pocket, along with Rosa holding on to all the master keys during a time in which it was impossible for her to commit the murder, it is impossible to open with the keys currently announced. However, Krauss more than likely also holds a key to Natsuhi's room. This way the culprit could leave Natsuhi's key in George's pocket while also locking the door.If this is true than Genji is suspicious since he knew that George, Shannon, and Gohda went to Natsuhi's room(I don't like this part since its just to easy to figure out that Genji influenced the crime. It is possible that he saw the blood hand prints on the door and decided that it was suspicious enough he found Kumasawa and Nanjo's corpses, if he found the others he would have a high chance of getting shot. Another possibility to negate the suspicion is that they phoned Genji and told him where they were going (phone lines in EP1 were working at this point.))
Theory #2: Either Nanjo or Kumasawa killed Shannon's group. Genji either was in the group or saw the murderer. Genji was able to kill Nanjo/Kumasawa (unfortunately after the others died). Genji than told Rosa a fake story to hide his own suspicion
Theory #3: Genji is the murderer and killed both groups.
Witches Letter
Theory #1: Rosa places the letter on the table and blames Battler so that Maria won't see her killing Battler. Once Battler leaves he is either killed by Genji or by whatever the end game death is (which is not caused by a person). Whether she does this because she doesn't trust Battler or because she is a culprit is unknown. The hint is given that Rosa placed the letter there since she "received" a letter from "Beatrice" yet never showed it to the siblings (possibly a red herring).
All the random stuff shown at the end before the game board ended
Game Rule: Once Battler gives up, Beatrice is able to manipulate the game board anyway she wants, even before the end of the game (clock strikes 12). She can do this because once Battler is willing to accept her, she truly exists.
Arc#3: Banquet of the Golden Witch
Theories
Main Suspects/Accomplices for Banquet of the Golden Witch
- Eva
- Nanjo
- True Culprit (though may have been killed early)
First Twilight
Red Text
- There are five, one for each servant. (Refers to the master keys)
- Furthermore, all of the doors and windows in the 6 rooms are normal.
- No device exists which can lock them without a key, such as an auto-lock.
- 6 people: Kinzo, Genji, Shannon, Kanon, Gohda, and Kumasawa are dead!
- There is no one hiding in the six rooms!
- The 6 people died instantly! By instant death, I mean that as soon as they were attacked, they became incapable of action.
- Only the victims are inside the rooms, and no other people exist inside the rooms.
- The 6 people were not killed by traps
- None of the 6 people committed suicide!
- All five master keys were discovered, each in the pocket of one of the servants!
- The individual keys were found inside envelopes alongside the corpses!
- In short, all keys related to the linked closed rooms were locked inside the linked closed rooms!!
- The keys cannot be returned from outside the room using the crack of the door, the crack of the window, vents, or any place of the sort!!
- All of them had wounds resembling gunshot wounds which became fatal!
- It is impossible for the murder to have taken place outside the room!!
- I shall say more with the red! When the five other than Kinzo were murdered, the murderer was definitely in the same room!
- I already proclaimed in red at the time that there were no suicides!!
Suspect: Any Survivor
Theory #1: Overall the master keys don’t mean much so we will discard them from this theory and just say all the servants had the master keys at all points. The real problem becomes how the other keys were left in locked rooms. However, as stated in EP1 by Genji there is a lock to the boiler room, BUT there is no lock on the exit to the courtyard. All the culprit has to do is place Kinzo’s corpse in the boiler room and lock the room. He/She then exits through the door to the courtyard and commits the other murders (killing Genji and placing the boiler room key there). The culprit can then return to the boiler room and leave the chapel key there (if he didn’t leave it in the boiler room already). If needed the culprit could easily add a lock using a different key to the boiler room to give it the appearance of a closed room.
Theory#2: (I don’t like this one) Culprit places one of the letters with a key next to the corpse after the survivors enter the room. Culprit then pretends to discover the letter.
Second Twilight
Red Text
- Rosa and Maria died
- The cause of death was as Nanjo diagnosed
- Rosa and Maria were killed by other people
- Hideyoshi: I was in the room the whole time
- Hideyoshi: Both before and after the time period of the crime
Suspect: Eva or True Culprit
Theory #1: Eva killed Rosa and Maria, it is exactly as Battler explains it
Theory #2: True culprit killed Rosa and Maria. Culprit would have to not be under watch by the other survivors. My thoughts on the "true culprit" match this criteria.
Rudolf, Kyrie, and Hideyoshi's Deaths
Suspect: Eva or True Culprit
Theory #1: Culprit/Eva kills them with her gun. If Eva it is possible that Hideyoshi saw her commit the murder so Hideyoshi slapped her. She quickly went into a fit of rage and murdered Hideyoshi.
Natsuhi and Krauss' Deaths
Suspect: Eva, Nanjo, or True Culprit
Theory#1: Eva went to go make Natsuhi and Krauss coffee. During this time she poisoned the coffee and gave it to both Natsuhi and Krauss. After they died she realized that being poisoned would make her more suspicious so she took a thin wire and made the death appear to be strangulation.
Theory #2: Nanjo cannot be accounted for throughout this murder. Since he is obviously an accomplice of the true culprit it is possible that he poisoned the coffee.
Theory #3: When Eva is gone the true culprit enters the house through a window that Nanjo unlocked. The true culprit proceeds to kill of Natsuhi and Krauss.
George's Death
Suspect: True Culprit
Theory #1: True Culprit shoots George in the chest. The message on the door may have been written by the culprit prior the murder. The code is for a safe and is more than likely meant for Nanjo.
Nanjo's Death
Red Text
- After Jessica was injured, Eva was always under Battler's supervision.
- Battler is neither the culprit or an accomplice. By this, we can establish a perfect alibi for Eva
- There are no more than 18 people on this island
- No life forms other than humans have any connection to this game
- Kinzo is dead
- Krauss is dead
- Natsuhi is dead
- Hideyoshi is dead
- George is dead
- Rudolf is dead
- Kyrie is dead
- Rosa is dead
- Maria is dead
- Genji is dead
- Shannon is dead
- Kanon is dead
- Gohda is dead
- Kumasawa is dead
- Nanjo is dead
- The 15 people mentioned are dead
- Battler is alive
- Eva is alive
- Jessica is alive
- Eva was with you the whole time. So committing a crime was impossible for her.
- Of course, Battler-kun isn't the culprit. He wasn't forging an alibi for her, and he took the possibility that she was the culprit into account, watching her actions carefully.
- No chance existed for her to do anything suspicious!
- In short, at the time of the crime, only Nanjo and Jessica were in the servants' room
- Ushiromiya Jessica has not committed murder
- She was not involved with Nanjo's murder
- Her eyes were completely blocked. It's impossible for her to carry out a murder like that
- Neither Eva nor Battler killed Nanjo, nor were they involved
- The culprit who killed Nanjo was neither Battler nor Eva nor Jessica
- Jessica's eyes were completely blocked, and murder was impossible for her
- No actions caused by Jessica's body had any relation to or influence on the murder of Nanjo. This also applies to Battler and Eva
- Neither Jessica nor Battler nor Eva is the culprit who killed Nanjo
- Nanjo was killed by another person
- Of course, it was with a direct method of murder, not a trap
- A weapon was readied, and he was killed with it from point-blank range in front of him!
- The culprit appeared openly before Nanjo's eyes, and as they both looked at each other's faces, the culprit killed him
- The red only tells the truth
- Absolutely no factors other than humans participate in this game board
- The one who killed Nanjo was definitely a human. A human, with their feet on the ground, held up a weapon and killed with it! Right before his eyes!
THE SPOILER TAG CONTAINS SPOILERS ON WHO I THINK TRUE CULPRIT IS. IF YOU WANT TO SOLVE THIS ON YOUR OWN DO NOT CONTINUE
I MEAN IT
Suspect: Kanon
Theory #1: So what could pierce through this web of red text you ask? Quite simply a loophole in the red. The red says "Battler is alive, Jessica is alive, Eva is alive" Though this isn't apparent until EP4 there is another Battler Ushiromiya that exists. So who could that possibly be? The answer is simple, the killer is non other than Kanon. Kanon is Battler Ushiromiya, but he isn't called Battler until after he forsakes his name "Kanon" and becomes "Battler". Once Kanon "dies" he is able to remain hidden within Battler's red text. It becomes even more apparent when we take into account that Kanon's dead body is NEVER seen by Battler throughout the entirety of the question arcs (body is missing in EP2 + EP4). Nanjo is working with Kanon throughout all arcs verifying the body in EP1 + EP3 as "dead". Nanjo always makes it to the last few twilights, yet is always "murdered" instead of "missing." Kanon is paying Nanjo to help him since Nanjo has a sick grandchild. Kanon places a gun at point blank range and stares Nanjo in the eyes. He then fires a bullet from his gun directly into Nanjo's head. Kanon kills Nanjo at the very end in order to hide his own survival.
Theory #2: Someone on the island is either dead or pretending to be someone else. This theory is often constructed as Kanon=Shannon theory. Kanon and Shannon are NEVER seen at the same time in the same place when Battler shows up. This would allow another person to work behind the seens and kill Nanjo.
Theory #3: Battler's pathetic theory: someone was on the brink of death and after he/she killed Nanjo he/she died. The killer dies after EVA-Beatrice creates the web of red so at that point in time the killer is already dead.
Arc#4: Alliance of the Golden Witch
Theories
Main Suspects/Accomplices for Alliance of the Golden Witch
- True Culprit
- Nanjo
- Possibly Kyrie
First Twilight
Red Text
None
Theory #1: The bodies are not verified by Battler until late into the second day. This may mean that the first twilight's victims never happened. Reasons may be
1. They are testing the children to see who should become the next head
2. Hostages
Both of these theories will describe why Gohda and Kumasawa do not go into deep detail with the murders (they are unsure of the story the others will make). If the first twilight's victims are real than the others are being held hostage and that is why Gohda and Kumasawa cannot tell the true story (part of their story is also verified as fake later in the arc). As long as the people listed as the first twilight deaths die in the dining room before Battler sees the bodies we cannot be sure if they actually were killed at that time. Similarly the whole story about pitfalls and how their clocks say they were transported to the dungeon in less than 5 minutes may also be fake through either hostages or a test for the next head (part of their story is verified as fake later in the arc). These people obviously have a reason to lie, therefore we cannot be sure of what may really be going on behind the scenes.
Second Twilight
Red Text
None
Theory #1: The second twilight in this game is slightly different then the others while the rest of the games followed the "kill the two who are close". This game questions that requirement by pitting George and Jessica in the second twilight. There could be several reasons for this...
1. George and Jessica died at different times (helps to verify this because Jessica knows George is already dead when she talks with Battler). Not only that but there bodies were found so far apart the only hint we get that this is the second twilight is through fantasy scenes and where the stakes of purgatory are placed on future victims bodies. This means that the ordering of death may not be what we think especially since throughout EP4 the stake placement in this game is not consistent with how the stakes are placed in the other games (stakes are either placed in head or just around body).
ex. Shannon may have died with George for the second twilight, or all of these murders may be the 1st twilight.
2. Beato does not need to follow the "kill the two who are close" requirement, however, we are made to believe that people are close because they are killed during the second twilight. This questions such relationships as Jessica and Kanon (since Kanon only divulges his feelings when he is alone with Jessica)
Regardless of what order they were killed in George was shot in the head with a gun. The gun may be a different type from some other deaths. George's, Kyrie's, Gohda's, and Kumasawa's deaths are very clean with a single small bullet hole while everyone elses look like a strong high caliber round. This may mean
1. 2 different killers on the island with different types of guns
2. Bullets were shot at the victims from different ranges dissolving the spread of a shotgun (small bullet holes are close range, bloody messes are long range)
3. Killer has two different guns
Jessica was murdered in her room with the door locked. The locked door can easily been opened with a master key. The only problem is that she talks with Battler, telling him that George is dead and that her head will be crushed. I have already explained how she may have known George's death the only question is how she knows she will die and why wouldn't she give more information if she knew that fact. The reason may be
1. Jessica is forced into telling Battler what she says by the culprit. If she does not comply either her family or Kanon will be killed (hinted through fantasy scene of how she puts others above herself)
2. Death while on the phone was faked (may have been test for Battler or possibility of her being the culprit). She was then later killed and the room was made to look like she was killed in the room.
Kanon's, Shannon's, Nanjo's, Krauss', and Kyrie's Deaths
Red Text
- Kanon is dead.
- Among the five people in Kyrie's group, he was the first to die.
- In short, he was the 9th victim.
Theory #1: DON'T READ UNLESS YOU WANT WHO I THINK THE CULPRIT IS TO BE REVEALED.
Kanon forsakes his name revealing to the others that his name is in fact Battler. He may have forsaken his name much earlier than the actual murders in Kyrie's groups. For example he may have stuck them in jail, told them he was Battler, killed George and Jessica, THEN killed Kyrie's group. Kyrie's group may have escaped the jail (if there was one) or just of had their bodies moved to appropriate areas. The reason why Kyrie called Battler using the phone and told him a false story could be explained by hostages, or a threat to kill Battler.
Theory #2: Kyrie is the culprit. She is the only person to tell Battler the whole (fake) story that led to everyone's deaths. She fakes her death with Battler on the phone and later is killed by someone else.
Gohda's and Kumasawa's Deaths
Red Text
None
Theory #1: Kumasawa and Gohda believe that they were sent to the storehouse so they wouldn't influence the cousins actions. They believe that they will be set free for their whole acting routine with the cousins. Someone receives the key from Gohda using the side window. That person either
1. Opens the door and kills both of them immediately using a gun. Than proceeds to lynch the dead bodies
2. Opens the door. They are later killed by the culprit and placed back in the storehouse lynched.
3. Instead of working with Kumasawa and Gohda the culprit uses lock cutters to open the door and proceeds to murder them.
The door is locked and the key is found in Gohda's pocket. This may be explained by
1. A new lock is placed on the storehouse. If the culprit used lock cutters this is better explained since the culprit wouldn't know where the original keys were placed
2. Culprit places a fake key in Gohda's pocket
Battler's Sin
Red Text
- Six years ago for me, no person called Beatrice existed.
- The sin I am now demanding that you remember is not between Ushiromiya Battler and Beatrice.
- Ushiromiya Battler has a sin.
- Because of your sin, people die.
- Due to your sin, a great many humans on this island die.
- No one escapes, all die.
Theory #1: Pony Theory

Theory #2: THIS THEORY REVEALS WHO I BELIEVE THE CULPRIT IS
Kanon is Asuma's son, Kyrie switched her baby with Asuma's baby. That means that there are 2 Battlers. Kanon is sent to the orphanage but later comes back to the island to work for Kinzo. Battler's sin is living Kanon's life which was rightfully Kanons to begin.
Theory #3: Beato says Battler's sin is forgetting. Battler also states that he had a crush on Shannon 6 years ago. It is possible that either Shannon or Jessica secretly love Battler and his sin is not remembering while that person was waiting all alone for 6 years. Beatrice didn't exist yet because that person was either Jessica or Shannon.
Who is Battler's Mother
Red Text
- My name is Ushiromiya Battler. (Used by Battler)
- I am the Golden Witch, Beatrice. (Used by Beato)
- And I opened this game in order to fight Ushiromiya Kinzo's grandson Ushiromiya Battler. (Used by Beato)
- Ushiromiya Battler's mother is Ushiromiya Asumu. (Used by Battler)
- My name is Ushiromiya Battler (Used by Battler)
- It was from Ushiromiya Asumu that Ushiromiya Battler was born. (Used by Battler)
- You are not Ushiromiya Asumu's son (Used by Beato)
Theory #1: Kyrie lied about having a miscarriage to Rudolf. Both her baby and Asuma's baby were born on the same day. Kyrie, knowing that Rudolf would pick Asuma switched her baby with Asuma's baby. This means that Kyrie is battler's mother and that this "other" Battler born from Asuma exists and was probably sent to an orphanage.
Ange's Death (1998)
Red Text
None
This death is not apparent to either anime watchers or VN readers. The only reason that VN readers know that 1998 Ange dies is that it says it in the credits.
Theory #1: Although not shown in the anime, Amakusa was carrying a what is assumed to be a sniper rifle. Amakusa does not listen to Ange and instead follows her. When Kasumi and her body guards attack Ange Amakusa kills them.
1. Ange is killed by Kasumi. In the VN all of Kasumi's body guards' bullets get blocked by the seven stakes of purgatory, however, Kasumi's bullet was never shown to be blocked. Amakusa then kills Kasumi after Ange has been shot and is bleeding to death.
2. Amakusa kills all of Kasumi's body guards. After he kills Kasumi he proceeds to kill Ange for an unknown reason.
Theory #2: All of Ange's mission was an illusion. Ange jumped off of the skyscraper and instead of surviving by a miracle (said in VN), Ange is killed.
Theory #3: After barely surviving her confrontation with Kasumi, Ange decides that since she has completed her journey and has received Maria's forgiveness she should celebrate the momentous event with bungee jumping. Unfortunately, she forgets to bring the bungie :(
