What Do You Focus On?
Anime Relations: Mobile Suit Gundam F91
F91 is a prime example of anime that feels very different depending on your particular fetish. If you love good storytelling, you'll hate it, as it's just barely coherent. On the other hand, it has possibly the best Gundam soundscape ever, and some of the best visuals in the franchise: as pure, live-in-the-moment, visceral experience the opening scenes are quite something.

I think it's starting to become obvious to myself that I have some kind of mecha fetish. F91's story was certainly not really easy to follow and somewhat of a mess at times (along with the characters), but because of pretty much everything you mentioned, I still really enjoyed it because of those aspects. The depiction of war on the colony, the amount of detail put into the mobile suits all the way down to showing off how their joints and pressure released (or something) whenever they took a step with their feet, the bullet shells scattering around, etc. Crazy.Sound wise though, I wish there was "more", the movie felt almost too quiet at times. "Is this an Oshii film?", lol. I think CCA does everything F91 did but even better, but I probably just have a fetish for Char. But that opening scene for F91 is really something else. |
